In 6th grade, we focus on the building blocks of art, the elements of art: line,
shape, color, space, texture, value, and form. We will be creating works that
exemplify the elements. Examples of the units that we will be covering include:
Watercolor landscape, figure drawing, and coil pottery.
We are respectful. Take responsibility for your materials and work - use the
supplies as instructed to make sure that they last. Respect your work by
putting in your best effort in class. Be respectful of your teacher and peers
by not talking during instruction or during peer answers.
We use craftsmanship. Take your time with your work, and follow the
instructions on the best way to apply the medium. When you rush, its
obvious to the viewer.
We are not afraid of mistakes. There are lots of ways to fix, change, or
hide mistakes. Plus, it may take your artwork in a new direction that you
hadnt thought of before!
We clean up our messes. The studio should be just as clean, if not cleaner,
than the start of class.
We have fun! Art is a good way to express yourself and try new ideas.
However, we have to make sure that we are meeting all of the other
expectations as well!
Grading policy
10% of your grade is your class participation. This is taking part in class critiques
and discussions, as well as your participation in studio clean up. It also means that
you are using your class time to complete your work. This is essential, since most
of what we do cannot be taken home to work on.
20% of your grade is your skill exercises. This refers to the in-class exercises, warmups, exit tickets, and activities. These exercises and reflections will help you be
successful with your final project, so it is essential that you complete them.
70% of your grade is your final artwork. Artwork is how you apply and demonstrate
your understanding in the art room. Projects are not based entirely on skill, but
they are also not based entirely on effort. Your projects are based on the concepts
and skills in addition to your expression and effort. The generalized rubric is
attached.
