Formal Assessment: students will create their own poems explaining the dilemma
Evaluation Criteria: Students use the conventions of poetry: stanza, rhyme, line breaks,
metaphors, similes, imagery, repetition etc.
Relevant theories and/or research best practices: Creativity in the classroom fosters a
stronger understanding of the material, because they're given the chance to explore
and present in a way that's meaningful to them. By working in a medium where they're
the most comfortable, they can explore the information more fully. When students are
tasked with understanding literary terms, concepts, etc, giving them the chance to
understand these things in a different way will help prepare them for later in the year.

Lesson: Students and I will engage in circle discussion on what was going on in the videos,
what were the poets both alluding to, if they themselves have ever used more than one
language. What are some of the issues that come with standard English in the classroom,
what are some of the ways we can alleviate some of the pressure of learning standard
English?
For homework students will be asked to create their own poems discussing the same main
ideas found in the poems we watched in class
Reflection: this lesson plan is the scaffolding for element 4. In this lesson I set how
Ebonics or Patwa as shown by Jamilia Scott can be infused in Standard English. I also
show how sometimes the two languages bump heads so to speak. In this lesson
students will explore their own relationship to home language and the language taught
at school. We will touch on code-switching. Students will then be able to internalize the
poems and the discussion by creating their own poems speaking on their own
experience with language. This will lead students to understand the next days lesson in
which we will be reading Sandra Cisneros Mericans. This lesson is related to the
standard because by the 12th grade student have already been familiar with the
conventions of grammar and formal essay writing. To be able to incorporate their home
language with academic language will show skillful use of rhetorical choices and
language practices.
