Visit to Delhi Jal Board Water Treatment Plants (Sonia Vihar and Wazirabad)

An Educational excursion was organized to visit Delhi Jal Board, Water Treatment Plants at Wazirabad and
Sonia Vihar under DBT Star College Scheme on 20th Jan. 2012.

The visit was organized for science students wherein 108 students of of B.Sc (H) Chemistry, B.Sc
(H)Zoology, B.Sc (H) Botany, B.Sc (H) Maths, B.Sc Life Sciences and B.Sc. Physical Sciences across all years
participated. The main aim was to make the students aware of the water treatment process and
environmental issues.

One batch of 54 students visited Wazirabad treatment plant under the supervision of Dr Vimal Rarh, Dr
Chayannika Singh and Ms Divya Kaur Matta.

Another batch of 54 students visited Sonia Vihar treatment plant under the supervision of Dr Laxmi
Narula, Dr Archna Milhotra, Mr Rajkumar and Dr Gaganjot.

It was an adventurous and exhilarating experience in which the budding scientists got a chance to get
themselves acquainted to the practical knowledge of the different stages of water purification

The officials at the water treatment plants explained the different stages in detail which broadly included
Raw water input from various sources like Yamuna, Bhakhra Storage, Upper Ganga Canal &
Groundwater
Aeration
Pre-chlorination treatment
Coagulation/Flocculation
Post chlorination
Storage and supply to city

After the visit to the water treatment plants, both the batches reached Indraprastha park where quiz
regarding environmental issues was held and all the students participated enthusiastically.

Visiting the water treatment plants was a very knowledgeable experience for the students. The trip was
extremely informational satisfying the internal urge of all science students and helped creating
environmental awareness. The interaction with the Delhi Jal Board officials also enlightened the students
about the degrading condition of water bodies like Yamuna river in specific. Overall it was a very
informative and knowledgeable experience.
