Gender is the focus of the essay. The essay has three parts. Each part must be
labeled and answered by numeral and alphabetic entry.

Part I. Conceptual Understanding. Provide a working concept of gender that is


used in sociology in your response to the entries below (10 points)
a) What is the sociological concept of gender discussed in our course?
b) How can gender differ from society to society? (Roscoe)
c) How does the sociological meaning of gender differ from local,
popularized notions that you know? (Use an example best known in
your society)
Part II. Application: You are to apply your understanding of gender from Part I
to the reading by Deborah Tannen. (Conversational Style: Talking on the
Job, Chapter One, Harper Collins Publishers, 1994)
a) Give an example from Tannens text that demonstrates different
conversational styles used by men and by women (5 points)
b) Explain the miscommunication between the manager and a male
employee (5 points)
c) Who is Goffman and why is his theoretical position important to
Tannens study? (5 points)
Part III.
Based on your experience in Pakistan, how does gender operate in
communication between men and women? Is it the same as in the
American system described by Tannen? (5 points)
