Teacher Directions for Wonder Literary Log

Accompanying Wonder is a Literary Log for students to respond in

writing for each section of the novel. A variety of prompts for each
section are designed to increase the relevancy of the novel and
facilitate critical thinking. Many of the prompts could be used for longer writing pieces.
The Literary Log engages students and encourages discussion with a learning partner, the
Log Mate. Encourage students to add sketches or drawings to their Literary Log.
The Literary Log includes a page for each section with the following prompts:

Questions I have
Something newnew characters, new settings, and/or new words
One-Sentence Summary
Heres what I think

The Literary Log is optional. Use the Literary Log as is, adjust it to your needs, use the
prompts without the Log which are on the Unit PowerPoint, or dont use the Log.

Guidelines for my Wonder Literary Log.

As you read Wonder follow these guidelines for completing your Literary Log.
1. Read the assigned pages before completing your Literary Log page.
2. Questions I have: Write down any questions you have after reading your assigned pages.
Questions can be about characters, plot, something that happens, something you dont
understand, etc.
3. Something newnew characters, new settings, and/or new words: Write down the names
of new characters, change in setting, and/or new words.
4. One-Sentence Summary: In one sentence, summarize what happened in the section you just
read. It isnt always easy to write one sentence that communicates what happen in the
section you just read, so think about the most important events that occur. Having onesentence summaries for each section will help you remember what happens throughout the
book.
5. Heres what I think: Respond to the questions or prompts. You may write or draw your
responses.
6. Literary Log Mate: Discuss the section you just read and the responses you just entered into
your Literary Log with your Log Mate. Try to answer each others questions and add or revise
what you have written or drawn based on what your Log Mate did in his or her Literary Log.

When given the choice between being right and being kind choose
kind.
