Author’s Note

My book was written to inform readers how various opinions can affect the overall perspective about someone’s true character. Rutherford B. Hayes faced much ridicule for his unwise decisions. Many people question his actions pertaining to the Compromise of 1877, while failing to recognize his true intentions. My name is Breazia Robinson I am an 8th grade scholar at Citizens Leadership Academy, and I chose to relay the story of the Compromise of 1877 through a description that does not depict Rutherford as a heartless man. I will also include other acts that he passed that benefitted the U.S. You may notice that the words in this note are an odd color. Rutherford loved the color of green.

Hayes was no stranger to politics. He

served as a republican member of Congress from 1865-1867 and was elected the 19th president of the United States in 1876.

In 1877, he removed the troops that were protecting South Carolina and Louisiana to successfully move forward with reforming the United States. African-Americans and Democrats felt betrayed. This is called the Compromise of 1877. “Rutherfraud”

became his nickname.

Hayes did not let these insults affect his presidency. In fact he vetoed the attempts to repeal acts that were harmful to African Americans, but he is not remembered for events such as this.

Hayes also put an end to the postal scandal that occurred during his presidency. This was where postal officials received bribes to destroy many deliveries that were addressed to Western states.

Hayes kept his promise not to seek re-election in 1880. This honesty adds to the many traits of his modest character. He stated that he was pleased with the President who preceded him.

After resigning as president, Hayes became an advocate for educational charities and prison reform. He was also elected to be on the Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University. He would prove to be an exemplary man of his time.
