Tutorial 5: Madrigals: Use Monteverdis Cruda Amarilli [NAWM 71]

(In these madrigals the composers focus on word painting, using the materials to evoke
ideas, characterizations, etc.
Make sure they can practice listening to and describing (using the terminology) the
various concepts below. Also, ask them to take the next step to interpret the way these
materials help to construct: tension, relaxation, intensity, forward motion, stasis,
resolution through the compositional use of the various musical materials.
Texture and the relationship between voices: homorhythmic, contrapuntal, stratified,
imitative voices, treble dominated

Cadences and Melodic ideas


-ascending, descending, stepwise, chromatic melodic ideas, pitch range,
-cadences; full, overlapping, and their implications
-consider text/music relationships syllabic, melismatic, musical meaning-word
painting
Harmonic: dissonance, resolution, chromaticism
Point out or have them point out any interesting Rhythmic gestures that contribute to
the mood or character of the piece.
