Mechanical Vibration
Detection of Machine Imbalance

Date of Experiment:

Date of Submission:

Student ID:

Students Name:

OBJECTIVE:
Detection of Machine Imbalance with FFT Spectrum Measurement

INTRODUCTION
Machine imbalance has become a big vibrational problem especially with modern
turbomachineries, where the problem may induce loses up to million due to down time of
turbomachineries. In this experiment, a rotor kit resembling a turbomachinery is
purposely made imbalance to simulate the problem. Students are exposed to the
significant of the problems and also fundamental approach to the solution of the
problems.

THE EXPERIMENT
This Lab experiment requires you to use the Signal Analyzer (Refer Figure 1) integrated
with the industrial accelerometer (ASH201) to measure frequency, velocity and
acceleration of the rotor system in X and Y directions under different imbalance loadings.
You are to decide a suitable range and increment of loadings and number of experiments
to conduct. The conduct of this experiment is given under Methodology.
You are to develop what you would think the best way of writing down the data obtained
from the experiment in order to present the reduced data for your report.
The use of computer software applications to analyze the data are encouraged, e.g. Excel,
Dbase etc.

Figure 1: OneProd MVP-2C signal analyzer

METHODOLOGY
1. Turn on the signal analyzer. Select Expert Module (the second top row key
from left).
2. In the route screen, select OFFROUTE. Then select either FFT-ACC or
FFT-VEL for acceleration or velocity unit.
3. Make a radial vibration collection by placing ASH201-A industrial acceleration
sensor on the bearing casing of the RotorKits.
4. Understand how the analyzer measures the required data. You may spend 20
minutes in trying out it and consult with the Lab Technician on it. The Manual for
the Analyzer may be provided in the Lab
5. Once you are familiar with the operation of the analyzer, carry out the experiment
to obtain the data required for analysis.
6. Ensure that the data you collect are as accurate as possible. Tolerances and
accuracy of the data must be noted down also to help you do the analysis.

ANALYSIS
1. Check that the data you obtained from the experiment are sufficient for your
analysis and will help you to provide evidence for your conclusion
2. Plan your analysis step by step
3. Reduce your data, if any, to the appropriate format required for analysis
4. Apply the theory learnt in this area wherever relevant

REPORT
1. Make sure that your report is self-standing and it must at least contain the
following:
a. Introduction of the experiment
b. Theory
c. Experimental procedures
d. Results and data reduction, if any
e. Discussions: In the discussion section please include discussion about
principles of sensor, signal conditioning and data acquisition system that is
being used in the experiment.
f. Conclusion
2. Your report must be typed on A4 size paper with normal margins using Times
Roman font 12. All diagrams and photos must be part of the report (not pasted on
to the report)
3. Your report must have a standard front cover provided in MMLS.

OBJECTIVE:
Detection of Machine Imbalance due to Damaged Bearing and Foundation Stiffness
Looseness, with FFT Spectrum Measurement.

INTRODUCTION
Detection of various types of damages accurately is very important in the maintenance of
modern turbomachineries. Early detection of these vibrational problems will save the
plant owners millions of dollars. Thus in this experiment, students are exposed to a rotor
kit (resembling a turbomachine) that is induced with damaged bearing and foundation
stiffness looseness. Students are to experience the significant of the problems and ways to
solve it.

THE EXPERIMENT
This Lab experiment requires you to use the Signal Analyzer (Refer Figure 1) integrated
with the industrial accelerometer (ASH201) to measure frequency and velocity of the
rotor system in X and Y directions due to damage bearings and reduced foundation
stiffness. You are to decide number of experiments to conduct. The conduct of this
experiment is given under Methodology.
You are to develop what you would think the best way of writing down the data obtained
from the experiment in order to present the reduced data for your report.
The use of computer software applications to analyze the data are encouraged, e.g. Excel,
