Executive Summary: Questions to be Explored

This chapter included a detailed case study about Klamath Paper Products. Reread the
case study and answer the following questions.
1. Based on the design requirements and decisions that have been made, what routers would you
recommend for Klamath? Do some Internet research to find a router that will meet Klamaths
needs and write two or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.
2. In the future, Klamaths separate voice network will be dismantled. All voice, data, and video
traffic will traverse the Metro Ethernet network. This will simplify the topology of the current
voice/data network and facilitate manageability. It will also allow Klamath to reduce the costs of
operating separate data and voice networks. Research a VoIP solution that would work for
Klamath. Write two or three paragraphs about the solution and why you chose it.
3. Klamath doesnt seem too concerned about security. This should concern you. Write a proposal
for Klamath that discusses a security project that you would like to do for Klamath to help them
understand their network assets, the security risks that they face, and the steps they should take to
become more secure.
4. Research a Metro Ethernet service that is offered by a vendor in your country (or another country
if your country doesnt have Metro Ethernet). Write a one-page paper that describes the service
in technical terms. Also, include pricing information if it is available.

Summary of Findings
1. Based on the design requirements and decisions that have been made, what routers would you
recommend for Klamath? Do some Internet research to find a router that will meet Klamaths
needs and write two or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.

The router I would recommend is the Asus RT-N66U. PC World in 2013 found that this
was the best router for both the home and home office. This router is compatible with the
802.11n standard. The reviewers found that it is the fastest 802.11n router. Furthermore, the
Quality of Service (QoS) feature has three different modes. The router can be configured to set
priorities for specific types of network traffic. In addition, the encryption includes WPA2 and
WPS, as well as WPA2 Enterprise and support for RADIUS authentication server (Brown, 2013).
With the compatibility features to 802.11 ac routers, its low price, its support of
videoconferencing, and good bandwidth, this router would meet the needs of Klamath. Its
performance on the 2.4GHz frequency band was well above any other competitor. Another
article reviewing this router states that It provides 2.4GHz- and 5GHz-band Wi-Fi concurrently
(Unsworth, 2016). The router also allows users to connect to the Internet in different ways. The
available bandwidth of this router also makes it ideal for bandwidth hungry tasks like 3D HD
video streaming and multiplayer gaming, while at the same time still enabling you to surf the
web and download/share files. It's also jam-packed with features such as a built in VPN server, a
firewall that you can customize, QoS and IPv6 support (Mohr, 2013).

Moving to Metro Ethernet means that Klamath will be using Ethernet technology in a
metropolitan area that connects subscribers and businesses to a wide area network (WAN) and
the Internet, or connects branch offices to an Intranet (Wolf, 2011). Since Ethernet is capable of
supporting high bandwidths, this will be a good move for the company. This will also allow the
company to utilize a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) which allows phone calls to be made
using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line (Voice Over
Internet Protocol, 2016).
One VoIP solution that would work would be use of an application like Shore Tel. The
cost, to begin with, is affordable and will allow the company to focus on other areas. In a
comparison of eight competitors, the Nemertes Research found that ShoreTel was the lowest in
first-year and five-year costs (ShoreTel proven as lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for 1 &
5 year term, 2015). In addition, reviews have demonstrated that ShoreTels reliability and good
performance is popular with many companies (Unified Communications; Going Beyond
Business Phone Systems, 2016).

3. Klamath doesnt seem too concerned about security. This should concern you. Write a
proposal for Klamath that discusses a security project that you would like to do for Klamath to

Lethe Tech Solutions, 7

help them understand their network assets, the security risks that they face, and the steps they
should take to become more secure.
Typically, the reason a company would not be too concerned about security is because
they do not realize the impact breaches could have on their profits, their business, and their
reputation. Writing a security proposal will serve the purpose of not only designing a security
policy, but creating an awareness of the need to be concerned. The proposal will list the
companys mission and vision as well as any factors that should be a security concern. Following
this list, reasonable steps of action should be listed including awareness of the new policy and
expectations.
In addition, a group of IT specialists should be formed that will review the network
design and any factors that may impact implementation of security measures. This group will
then develop the policy, train the employees on a recurring basis, and set up open communication
between stakeholders, end users, and other affected personnel where concerns can be easily
expressed and documented. Each of these steps is explained in greater detail in Ciscos article,
Network Security Policy: Best Practices White Paper written in 2005. Best practices include
creating usage policy statements, conducting a risk analysis, establishing a security team
structure, prevention, response, restoration, and review.

4. Research a Metro Ethernet service that is offered by a vendor in your country (or another
country if your country doesnt have Metro Ethernet). Write a one-page paper that describes the
service in technical terms. Also, include pricing information if it is available.

Ethernet is a popular technology that utilizes carrier Ethernet in a metropolitan area
network or MAN. Various contributors from different companies create a Metropolitan-area
Ethernet system that is low cost, reliable, scalable, and of sufficient bandwidth which is often
superior to other options. (Rouse, 2016). Subscribers, including businesses and offices are
connected through the Metro Ethernet. In addition, customers can be easily added to the network
since the use of Ethernet is so widespread.
One provider is SolveForce in Phoenix, Arizona. Their new expansion includes T1 line
and T3 line services, satellite Internet, Cable Internet, DSL and nationwide point to point lines
throughout the state of Arizona. They are rolling out a wide variety of options to all metropolitan
areas including Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, Sun City, Fountain Hills and many more (Sramek,
S. and Legarski, R., 2016). According to the article, this will also include Ethernet over fiber or
Ethernet over copper. Both fiber optics and copper have been fast growing industries which
SolveForce is planning on taking advantage of. Copper, in particular, has been found to provide
a large amount of Bandwidth for a cheaper price (Sramek, S. and Legarski, R., 2016). Another
aspect of SolveForce is that they can offer point to point services and dark fiber providers in
Phoenix (Sramek, S. and Legarski, R., 2016).
The companys initial and ongoing goal is to provide one place where customers can have
their telecommunication needs met as a low cost. Their slogan is getting its customers more for
their money no matter what it takes (Sramek, S. and Legarski, R., 2016). Unfortunately, as with
many companies, no prices are posted online. Instead, potential customers are encouraged to fill
out a quote request and submit it. This method, would of course, give the customer the best
estimate of price, but a general idea of the pricing would be helpful for those that are creating a
comparison of prices and services different vendors offer.

Background Information for the WAN Design Project

Klamath Paper Products, Inc. manufactures paper and packaging products, including
office paper, newsprint, cartons, and corrugated boxes. They also manufacture wood pulp and
chemicals used in the manufacturing of pulp and paper.
Klamath Paper Products (which will be called Klamath from now on) has approximately
15 sites in the western United States. Headquarters are in Portland, Oregon. Klamath employs
around 1500 people and has customers all over the world, with a large customer base in Asia.
Klamath is concerned about reduced profit margins caused by fewer sales in Asia in
recent years and the scarcity of lumber used to manufacture Klamaths products. Klamath
recently completed a strategic re-engineering project that identified ways to increase profits by
improving the efficiency of internal processes and making more use of recycled post consumer
paper in the production of new paper products.
As a result of the re-engineering project, the Conservation Initiative Task Force at
Klamath plans to roll out an ongoing distance-learning program that will train all employees on
ways to conserve raw materials, use recycled materials, and work more efficiently. Executive
management considers the new training program vital to the continued success of Klamath, and
approved funding to equip the training rooms at most sites with digital videoconferencing
systems.
After Klamath installs the videoconferencing system and the WAN to support it, there are
plans to offer classes to other companies in the wood and paper manufacturing industries.
Klamath has recognized a business opportunity associated with the federal governments plan to

help pay for workers in the timber industry to attend classes in modern methods for sustainable
forest management and environmentally sound lumber and paper production.
