Backside Instructional A: Rules

BACKSIDE ROUTES
•On the backside of any route, we
will always have one player working
the NUMBERS area of the field...
## 12-14 yds S S ..and a player working the HASH area.
Make break (2 yards on either side of the hash)
(if any) here
•The player working the Numbers is
assigned a “GO READ,” and the
player on the hash is assigned a
C “SEAM READ.”
8-10 yds
Make your decision here! •The GO READ bases his break on
what the Cornerback does...
..and the SEAM READ works off the
nearest Safety, whether he starts in the
middle of the field or near the hash.
•The KEYS:
•Be DECISIVE--make a decision and
go! (Don’t give the QB a “no read!”)
•Stay out of the other receiver’s area!
•Great Backside routes are critical!
Rules / Reads BIG plays happen on the back side!
GO READ: Attack the outside leg of the CB over you, break his cushion, and plan on beating him deep...
…at 8 yards, if you determine that you can’t get deep, break back inside, working toward QB’s vision,
but NEVER crossing the hash! (Rule: “If you’re even, you’re leavin’”...go by him deep)
SEAM READ.
READ. Must release cleanly & avoid underneath LBs. Regain “verticality,” read S & make decision between 8 & 10
yds …if the safety rotates away from you,
you, leaving the middle, stay on your vertical course!
…if the safety stays deep over top of you,
you, break flat across the middle (“DIG”) at 12-14, look for a hole
…if he opens quickly to you & crosses your face (most likely f/ hash), cross his--break
his--break to a Thin Post inside him

Backside Instructional B: Who Does What - Even

BACKSIDE: Who Does What

•The LAST digit of a play call tells the

backside receivers which one has
## S S the GO READ and which has the
SEAM READ!
•If the last digit is EVEN,
(e.g., 60, 70, 62, 72, 64, 76, etc.),
the OUTSIDE receiver has the
C GO READ...
..and the INSIDE receiver has the
SEAM READ.

OUTSIDE RECEIVER: Speed Dig. Dig. Base your split on the CB over you. If he’s soft, go Top of #s or Hash +2 if on far hash; if
he’s pressed, split Middle #s or Hash +4 to give yourself room for an angled “Burst” release to get clearance inside. After
initial release, accelerate straight upfield to a depth of 14, use a ‘Big’ (arced) Speed break to a depth of 18, using your inside
elbow & head snap to pull your body around without losing speed as you ‘run around the corner.’ You MUST come
underneath the Seam and work into an open window beyond the first underneath defender. Acccelerate across at 100% v.
man, 60% v. zone. *If you hear “B” at the end of the call, the QB is coming to you sooner, so Speed break 10 to 14. 14.
NEXT MAN IN: Seam.Seam. Your job is to clear an area for the Dig! Widen split to Hash +2, take best available release (prefer
outside), hit the jets & Stay on Seam. If Saf stops his feet or rotates away, expect the ball. Otherwise, sprint & don’t look
back. If, by game plan, “Dagger” is always your first read when we call this, use a 5 step Angle Pop-up drop. If it is a
QB:
secondary read, use the drop associated with the Frontside combination. Read is the Jack or BS Safety. If he stops his feet
or turns his hips, abort your drop and get a 2 ball to the Seam NOW, just as you would in normal Backside progression. If he
stays deep, shuffle up and lead the Dig into a window, being careful to throw through lanes and not over people.

OUTSIDE RECEIVER: Wrap Seam. Seam. Becomes just like a Seam Read on Odd # routes, but with a tighter split (1 yd inside the

to 1-2 yards outside the seam, and hit the jets vertically, expecting the ball if the safety stops his feet or leaves.
NEXT MAN IN: Wrap Dig.Dig. Split wider than normal, 3-4 yards inside the Outside receiver. Take an outside angle on your
release to get to a spot over the Outside receiver’s original position, 5-6 yards deep. If you’re ON the ball, release 1st; if OFF,
give up the right of way to the outside receiver.Straighten without losing speed, then execute a Speed Dig at 13 and rounds to
17. Final break should be underneath the Seam; accelerate through break and get inside first underneath defender into an

OUTSIDE REC: Split Top #s or Hash. Take normal switch release, straighten HARD at 10 and stay straight for 3-4 steps.
Make strong eye contact with the safety, wherever he is. Nod off your last step and accelerate SKINNY to the ‘Flag’, going as
high as you need to in order to get over top of the CB. Throw will have a lot of air on it; look over your outside shoulder and
adjust your angle on the run.
INSIDE REC (If one): Run Go Read course, working HARD to attract CB attention/eye contact. Hook up at 11, show hands
as though getting the ball, come back to 9 yards and sit as a late outlet.
QB: The BS “Flag” is always primary when attached to a call. 5 angle pop-up, even if in gun, look safety off HARD, possibly
with a short pump AS you drop. Off your pop up, snap shoulders & hips suddenly to backside, find the throwing corridor
between the BS CB and safety…take Flag route to the deepest possible spot in the corridor with a big 3 ball, using javelin
step if needed…let Flag run under ball. Corridor is defined as 1/2 way between C & S…if you miss, miss HIGH, not flat. If CB
has deep leverage and/or is turning and running under it, come off to Outside Sit (if available) to THROW AWAY.
