John Wesley, a major force for missions and spiitual awakening in the
1700's, advised: "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all
the ways you can, in all the places you can, in all the times you can, to all the
people you can, as long as ever you can.” That doesn’t mean that we are
"do-gooders’, defined as "someone trying to live beyond their spiritual
income." We have God's grace to become what He desires and to do as He
inspires. This Christmas, we have the opportunity for what | would call
“Operation Doing Good."
We recently set a new record by packing 3,784 gift-filled shoe boxes for
God's glory and sharing the gospel with children around the world as a part
of Operation Christmas Child. The project, led by Jody Statile, even
involved community volunteers and donations from those outside of our
church membership and a packing party to assemble 1,100 shoe boxes,
while our church members packed the other 2,684.
We also do good works by giving to our church budget, which includes a
large percentage going to the Cooperative Program of Southern Baptist
Missions. Our Florida Baptist Convention is also supported which seeks to
reach over 300 different Fanguaye groups in our state and sent over three
million dollars more than last year to our national and international mission
causes. This increase in giving allowed the IMB to commission 100 new
international missionaries. When you “tithe” to the Lord through His
church, you are not just enhancing our ministry here but doing good around
the world When you give an additional amount to our Kingdom Missions
Offering, every penny goes to share the gospel through our mission
partnerships, as well as help our SBC missionaries. “Hold fast to what is
good: contribute to the needs of the saints" (Romans 12:9, 13). Besides
lessing the world, our greatest good is not what we get out of it, but what
we become by it.
