    BELTWEIGHERhavebecomeanimportantpartofmostbulkmaterialhandlingfacilities.However,being
    relativelyunobtrusiveinmostconveyorsystems,theyareoftenoverlookedorignoredaftertheirinitial
    installation.Lackofsimplemaintenancewillpotentiallycausesignificantreductionintheaccuracy
    capabilitiesoftheseinstruments.Mostbeltweigherorbeltconveyorscalesarecapableofproviding
    reliableresultwithin%oftheirfullscalerating.Beltconveyorscalethathavebeencertifiedviathe
    NationalTypeEvaluationProgram(NTEP)arecapableofprovidingresultthatmeetthecriteriaofthe
    NationalInstituteofStandardsandTechnology(NIST)handbook44,wichis%.Thisisdefinedasbeing
    within%ofactualmaterialloadandrepeatablewithina%bandwith.

    Regardlessoftheaccuracycapabilityofthescaledesign,itisunlikelythatthisdevicewillperformas
    promisedifsimplemaintenanceproceduresarenotstrictlyadheredto.Everyscaleinstallationwill
    developitsownsetofoperatingcharacteristics;thereforeitisabsolutelynecessarytomonitorthe
    scalesperformanceandprovideroutinemaintenanceasrequired.Itisgenerallyadvised,throughout
    thebeltscaleindustry,thatcalibrationchecksbemadefrequentlyduringtheweeksafterinitial
    installation,thantoincreasethetimeframebetweencalibrationsasstatisticalresultsareobtained.
    Whilethisisasimplesuggestiontofollow,alltoofrequentlytheincreaseintimebetweencalibration
    verificationsdefaultstoonlywhenevertheproblemissuspected.Bythenitistoolateincorrect
    weighmentshavebeenmade,processhavebeeninterruptedandinventorylevelsneedothermeansof
    verification.

    Establishmentofaroutineinspectionprocedure,includingnotonlythebeltconveyorscale,butthe
    entirematerialhandlingsystem,willresultinanincreasedconfidenceinthescaleandultimatelygreater
    controloftheaccuracyitisproviding.Itisimportanttorememberthattheentireconveyorthatthebelt
    scaleisinstalledinbecomepartoftheWeighingsystems,andthatanychangesthatoccurorare
    performedwithinthisconveyorcanandprobablywillaffecttheperformanceofthescale.Thereforein
    additiontoaroutinescalemaintenanceprocedureitbecomesimperativethatanyandallmaintenance
    performedontheconveyorbereportedtotheindividualordepartmentresponsibleforthescales
    performance.
