(1875-1950)

1875 October 31 : Bom at Nadiad, Gujarat.


1891

: Married at the age of 16 to Zaverbai.

1897

: Passed matriculation examination from Nadiad High


School

1902

: Moved on to Bor sad.

1904 April

: His daughter Manibehn born.

1905 November

: His son Dahyabhai born.

1909 January 11 : Wife, Zaverbai expired.


1910 August

: Sailed for England.

1913 February 13 : After obtaining his Bar-at-Law returned to India.

: Elected for the first time as a Municipal Councillor in


Ahmedabad.

: Elected Secretary of the Gujarat Sabha.

: Came in direct contact with Gandhiji for the first time


when the first Gujarat Political Conference was held
at Godhra under Gandhijis Presidentship

1917-18

: Took up the relief work for the affected persons from


famine in Ahmedabad.

1918

: Established a special hospital in Bhagubhai Vanda


and arranged to distribute medicines at the homes of
the affected patients from influenza in Ahmedabad.

1918 March 30

: Addressed the meeting of the farmers.

1920 July 11

: Executive Committee of the Gujarat Political


Conference met at Nadiad and at his instance,
resolution was passed supporting non-cooperation.

1921 Summer

: Started putting on khaddar clothes.

1921 December

: Elected Chairman of the Reception Committee of the


Ahmedabad Congress Session.

: Took out a procession along with National Flag


(Nagpur Flag Satyagraha).

1924

: Established his own party, contested elections,


captured 35 out of 48 seats of the Committee of
Management of the Ahmedabad Municipality.
Accepted the responsibility as its President.

: Took up the relief work for the affected People from


floods.

: Organised flood relief in Guharat.

1928 February 4 : A convention of the farmers of eight villages was held


under his Presidentship (Bardoli Movement).

: Mother expired when he was in Yarvada Jail.

: Wrote to Gandhiji and explained about his nose


trouble.

1933 October 20 : Elder brother Vithalbhai Patel expired in Vienna.

: When Gandhiji wanted funds to be raised for the


cause of the Harijans, it was he who raised them.

: Released from imprisonment.

: Was the Chairman of the Parliamentary SubCommittee of the Indian National Congress.

: Third Local Self-Government Conference was held


under his Presidentship.

1940 November 1 : Arrested.

: Address delivered at the Congress Working


Committee when it passed the historical Quit India
Resolution.

: Released from Jail.

1946 September 2: Joined Nehrus Interim National Government as


Minister of Home Affairs and of Information and
Broadcasting.
1947
December 13

: Convened a meeting of the rulers of the Native states,


ministers and officers of the
Government of India at Cuttack. Delivered inaugural
address.

1948 December

: Became Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of


India after independence and held the posts till his
death.

1950 December 12:Brought to Bombay by a special plane from Delhi.


1950 December 15: Died of heart attack.
