Replacing subsub-frame bushings


Special tools: 999 5457
Note! Cars with SRS. When replacing any of the
rear bushings in the subsub-frame the following
applies;
Turn the steering wheel so that the steering shaft
joint is in the position as illustrated in paragraph
Release the steering wheel lock . Lock the
steering wheel by removing the ignition key. The
steering wheel should not be moved after this.
Tool 999 5457 consists of:
Counterhold (1), Threaded plate (2), Cutting
sleeve (3), Drift (4), Spacer sleeve (5), Screw and
nut (6).
Caution! The front left bushing is slightly oval in
the hole. It cannot be used on the front right
hand side.

Front
Note! The bushings must be changed one at a
time.
Raise the car

Remove screw and washers for the bushing


The sub-frame falls a little.
Install:
- counterhold (1) on the upperside of the
frame. See illustration
- cutting sleeve (3) and screw (6). Install from

underneath.

Tighten the large cutting sleeve nut until it stops


Remove counterhold.
Install threaded plate (2), spacer (5) and screw
(6)

Pull out the inner part of the bushing with the


cutting sleeve
Do this by tightening the large nut until the
cutting sleeve turns freely. The cutting sleeve is
not visible in the illustration.
Knock out a a piece of the flange on the bushing
Use a screwdriver and a hammer.
Note! Do not use a cold chisel.
Split the whole outer sleeve with a screwdriver
at the knocked out piece of the flange.

Pry out the bushing


Use a screwdriver.

Remove the inner part of the bushing from the


cutting sleeve
Spray universal oil/rust oil between the bushing
and the cutting tool. This makes it easier to
remove the bushing from the cutting tool.
Install the bushing in a vise. Turn the cutting
sleeve until it is free of the bushing. Use a pipe
wrench.

Installing bushing
Position the counterhold on the upper side of the
frame (not illustrated)

Install bushing with drift (4) and screw (6)


Note! Check that the marking corresponds
between the bushing and frame. See arrow.
Note! Differences between left and right bushing.
Tighten the nut on the screw until the bushing is
completely drawn in.
Remove tools

Install a new screw with washers. Tighten to


105 Nm,
Nm, angleangle-tighten to 120

Rear
Caution! The bushings must be changed one at a
time.
Remove the screw for upper engine torque rod

Release the steering wheel lock

Remove lock pin, screw and nut for lower screw


to joint between steering gear and steering shaft
Caution! On cars with SRS: Lock the steering
wheel by removing the ignition key. Do not turn
the front wheels so that the steering gear
position is changed. The SRSSRS-system contact

reel can be damaged.


Slide the universal joint on the steering shaft up
Raise the car

Remove antianti-roll bar link from antianti-roll bar


Remove:
- the two rear screws from the bracket, see
illustration
- center screw. The sub-frame falls a little.
Note! There is a locating pin for the bushing in
the bodywork on the left side. When replacing
the bushing a jemmy bar must be used to install
a the counterhold (1) on the upper side of the
subsub-frame. See illustration. Use a wood or similar
shim between the bodywork and jemmy bar.
Install the cutting sleeve (3) and screw (6) from
underneath
Note! The illustration displays the front subsubframe bushing.
After this operation go back and continue work
according to .
Note! Tighten rear bracket screws to 50 Nm.
Nm.
Then continue with following step.

Attach lower universal joint to steering gear


Tighten to

20 Nm.
Nm Install locking spring.

Note! Different pinion versions. See Steering


column/steering shaft/boot and needle
bearing/lower universal joint, replacement. Cars

without SRS: .

Attach the torque rod to the engine torque


control arm
Use new screw and nut.
Tightening:
M8: Tighten to 18 Nm and angle-tighten to
120.
120
M10: tighten to 35 Nm and angle-tighten to
90
