SUBMITTALS AND QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01 33 01.
B. Samples: Submit 10 lb. sample of each type of fill to testing laboratory,
in air-tight containers.
C. Perform Work in accordance with Missouri Department of Transportation
Standard Specifications for Highway Construction, 1999 edition, Section
306.

DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Bagged lime shall bear manufacturers name, product identification, and
certified weight. Bags varying more than 5 percent of certified weight
may be rejected; average weight of 50 random bags in each shipment
shall not be less than certified weight.
B. Store lime in weatherproof enclosures.
dampness.

Protect lime from ground

C. Bulk lime may be used with delivery and direct application using bottom
dump trucks. Delivery tickets shall state source of lime and chemical
content or other suitable specification designation to verify compliance
with specifications and product submittals.
D. Only hydrated lime shall be used. The use of quicklime is prohibited.
Hydrated lime can be dangerous; exercise appropriate caution if used for

the Work. Contractor shall become informed about recommended
precautions in the handling, storage and use of hydrated lime material.
1.06

PROJECT RECORD DOCUMENTS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01 77 19.
B. Accurately record actual locations of utilities remaining, and relocated by
horizontal dimensions, elevations or inverts, and slope gradients.

1.07

PAYMENT
A. Payment for Lime Modified Subgrade Stabilization shall be included in the
lump sum contract price for all locations where lime stabilization is
indicated on the Drawings and/or in the Specifications. At other locations
where the Project Manager geotechnical engineer determines by field
observation and/or testing that lime stabilization is needed, payment shall
be per square yard for each of the thicknesses required based on a
negotiated, mutually agreeable price per square yard between the
Construction Manager and Contractor for the specified thickness(es)
required..

PART 2

PRODUCTS

2.01

MATERIALS
A. Lime for subgrade stabilization shall be as specified in Section 306,
Missouri Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for
Highway Construction, 1999 edition.

PART 3

EXECUTION

3.01

EXAMINATION
A. Verify site conditions under provisions of Section 01 31 19.
B. Verify that survey benchmark and intended elevations for the Work are as
indicated.

3.02

PREPARATION

C.

Master Specification
B. Identify known underground, above ground, and aerial utilities. Stake and
flag locations.
Notify Construction Manager concerning identified utilities.
3.03

CONSTRUCTION
A. Construct a lime modified soil layer of 12 to 16 inch compacted thickness
as specified on the Drawings in accordance with Section 306, Missouri
Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for Highway
Construction, 1999 edition.
B. Compact the lime modified layers to the required compacted depth to 90
percent of the modified dry density in accordance with ANSI/ASTM
D1557. See Section 02223.
C. Develop a minimum CBR of 8 to 10. Measurement of the CBR shall be
by the method prescribed in the ASTM D1883 specification. If immediate
CBR of soil-lime mixture obtained in the field is less than 8 to 10, the
following options are available to the Construction Manager:
1.

Field-cure the soil-lime mixture until a CBR of 8 to 10 is achieved, or

2. Full or partial-depth removal and replacement with granular material.

The
combined thickness of the granular layer and the soil-lime
mixture layer
shall meet the required thickness. The minimum
granular layer thickness shall be 4 inches. The minimum soil-lime
mixture layer shall be 10 inches.
3.04

TOLERANCES
A. Top Surface of Subgrade: Plus or minus 1/10 foot.

3.05

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Field inspection and testing shall be performed under provisions of
Section 01 45 01.
B. Compaction tests and analysis shall be performed in accordance with
ANSI/ASTM D1556, D1557, D698, D2922 and with Section 01400 and
01410. Frequency of test shall be one for every 1,000 square yards per
lift or less, or as designated by the Construction Manager. Determination
of CBR values shall be made using the ASTM D1883 specification.
