Lazarus, Arthur, MD, MBA,C.P.E., F.A.C.P.E. "NFL Concussions and Common Sense: A
Recipe for Medical Errors and a Lesson for Physician Leaders." Physician Executive 37.1
(2011): 6-9. ProQuest. Web.19-Oct-16
The author Arthur Lazarus provides an in-depth review on this article about the
estimated number of total concussions around the nation is around 3.8 million. He mentions the
number one cause of concussions is in football related activities. He also discusses how
dangerous football related concussions are harmful to the brain and how it can impact football
players future lifes. Arthur mentions that former NFL players who've sustained several
concussions are more likely to suffer from clinical depression or Alzheimer's disease; and
thousands of former players have sued the league for failing to protect them from the hazards of
the sport. The league now penalties against players who strike opponents with their helmets,
mandates that all players wear more padding, and has tougher rules on when a player can return
to the game following injury. To avoid concussion issues, the NFL should take a more active
role in concussion and head injury guidelines at all levels of the sport. Players, coaches, and
other parties need to be better educated to combat both the risk of concussion and better manage
the injury as it arises. This article can provide much information in the facts of concussions and
the effects it can have on your body.
Nordqvist, Joseph. Concussions Cause Long-Term Effects Lasting Decades. Medical News
Today. MediLexicon International, 18 Feb. 2013. Web.18-Oct-16.
This article goes into detail about how concussions can leave lifelong damage to your
brain for years and even the rest of your life. Concussions in sports, from youth sports up to the
highest professional levels, have become a serious issue following the advancements in
technology and neuroscience. The Arthur Joseph Nordqvist explains long-term effects of
concussions include difficulty performing daily tasks, and report feeling slower overall. The
effects of concussions destroy lives and go well beyond the actual incident. The problem is even

more dangerous if you consider that 50% of athletes who have suffered a concussive blow do not
report any symptoms Nordqvist mentions in the article. In the long run, however, those
concussions can be devastating. People who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury often struggle to
live a full and productive lifes. This article can provide much information in my inquiry.
Press, the Associated. In Race to Develop Safer Football Helmets, Many Questions Remain.
The New York Times. The New York Times, 23 Aug. 2014.21. Web.18-Oct-16
This New York times article go in to detail about how the NFL top largest distribution for
helmets Riddell. is trying to make new helmets to protect and prevent head injuries in the NFL.
Riddell have uncovered new evidence that the company and league knew more about the risks of
concussions. Riddell was the NFLs official helmet maker from 1989 to 2014.Before these plastic
helmets, players merely wore leather helmets that had little to no benefit. The helmets of today
are much more suited to absorb contact and prevent injuries from reaching the players head.
Riddells claim that their new Revolution helmet would reduce concussions by 31%. Despite
the magnitude of this claim, it has been alleged that the company never even tested the helmets
against the rotational hits which cause most NFL concussions. Riddle is now trying to make new
helmets to protect players from concussions. This article can provide much information to my
inquiry and how Riddell new helmets claim to protect players from injury in the NFL.
Belson, Ken. Study Suggests That Some Football Helmets Are More Protective. The New
York Times. The New York Times, 31 Jan. 2014. Web.18-Oct-16
This writer Ken Belson explains past events in August of 2011, the first NFL concussion
related lawsuit was filed. there are nearly 90 lawsuits with approximately 2,300 plaintiffs. Many
of these lawsuits have been consolidated into a player claims against the NFL, and
Riddell. While the lawsuit was a combination of hundreds of actions brought by more than 5,000
ex-NFL players, the settlement also applies to the family members of players who died. More

than 200 former players opted out of the settlement to the lawsuit, which accused the NFL of
hiding the dangers of concussions. This article briefly describes the stories of Willis McGahee
and Mike Webster to illustrate the wide-ranging consequences of football-related concussions
and how the athletes overcome bad odds and specifically outlines the current lawsuit between the
former NFL players. This article can provide much information in the facts of concussions
related to the lawsuit and the effect it can have on your body.
Gbajabiamila, Akbar. "Concussion Lawsuits against NFL Shouldn't Be for
Everyone." NFL.com. NFL Network, 13 Feb. 2013. Web.18-Oct-16
This article from NFL.com goes into detail about the situation on the current NFL law
suit against the NFL players. The Arthur Akbar mentions the The NFL has seemingly taken
measures to combat NFL concussions by prohibiting face-masking banning head-slaps, and
outlawing spearing and the results these measures can take on the overall game. Akbar goes on
to highlights a comment by Deion Sanders that basically say that not all players should join the
lawsuits and that players should still want to protect the game and organization they worked for
and got paid to play football for. The claim is that only players who will be in danger of
developing health issues or already have issues should file again the NFL because then we could
lose the NFL as a whole because of the money they would have to pay to players. This will be
used to create my qualifiers in the argument bout NFL concussions. At this point, I hope to
include a section in my injury regarding the rule changes made to protect athletes. I feel as if this
article would be extremely useful in that sense.
