works and why it works. This can help me in formulating my own early intervention
method.
Background- This article provides historical and statistical data regarding the
importance of parent involvement in the early intervention process.
Understanding the field This article gives background knowledge of the effects of
positive early intervention services.
Findings/Conclusions The journal discusses the effective early intervention methods
and explains why others do not work.
Implications/Action Planning- This article has 55 different early intervention methods
one could build off and improve upon.

My action research project is about why families pack the foods they do in their
childrens lunches as well as why children choose to eat what they eat. This study
closely examines one of the variables Im studying which is how nutritional
knowledge among parents affects what they pack for their children.

Summary of essential
information:
cognitive levels can affect a childs food choices and why. It also looked into other
motivational factors such as peers and nutritional value play into how children choose
what to eat.
This study found that the frequency in which a food is present in a childs life
significantly affects their preference on that food. This article laid the
foundation for a lot of my other sources in that it help start the idea that may
different factors can influence a childs nutritional preference
Background- This article provides historical and statistical data regarding the
importance of nutrition in a childs life
Findings/Conclusions The journal discusses the availability of food and the more a
child is exposed to it the more likely the child will choose to eat it.

This study hypothesizes that many of these intervention methods are ineffective
because children at this age have already formulated their own preferences and eating
habits. Its difficult to change such habits after their formation.

Bisset and her team of researchers studied the impact of a new intervention
method called Little Cooks on 388 students. The program had an impact on
student knowledge of nutrition and an improved attitude towards healthy eating.
This journal entry provides meaningful insight and examples on different
methods that can improve the early intervention process. Also it provides a
different look into how parent involvement can be utilized inside the classroom.

Article
The practices this article recommends are necessary steps to suppress childhood
obesity. There are other variables that affect childhood obesity but this article
shows professionals the different ways a teacher can play their part.
Stage of action
research where the
source will be used:
Karrie, Dottie and Deirdre discuss the steps a childcare professional can take to
modify their classroom environment to encourage more nutritional eating
habits. They do this by discussing different activities that promote nutrition, the
importance of providing only healthy food choices to children at school, and the
way teachers can be a perpetual guide throughout the year when it comes to
healthy eating.
This article provides me with different ideas I can instill in the classroom as
well as my own teaching style.

Li and her team focus on the community food environment and the associations
with childhood obesity in Alabamas Black Belt region by providing both
quantitative and qualitative data.
This study highlights the issues present that correlate with childhood obesity.
By spotting out the negative trends and statistics they are isolating the problem
so it can be dealt with.
This journal provides the basis for current statistics in childhood obesity across
the country. While it focuses on Alabama specifically in their study, they also
go over the present data pertaining to childhood obesity while staying within 5
years.
Background- This article provides historical and statistical data regarding
childhood obesity.
Understanding the field This article gives background knowledge on the
trends relevant to childhood obesity.

Summary of essential
information:
My action research project focuses on childrens food choices and how that
affects what parents pack for them in their lunches every day. This article
influences my specific study because it provides insight on methods that can
bridge the gap between the parents and the classroom for early intervention.
Data Collection/Analysis Methodology- The data collected used to measure
the childs knowledge on nutrition was gained in some capacity through
interviews. I will also be conducting similar interviews with the children in
order to obtain similar data. This will be used to influence my early
intervention process.
Findings/Conclusions- The findings discuss the effects of parent involvement
in the early intervention process as well as suggest that the more
knowledgeable children are about nutrition, the more likely theyll make
healthier food choices.

Summary of essential
information:
Hoy and Childers survey data measuring food attitudes and behaviors among adults
with 6-11 year old children. Results found a positive shift in attitudes compared to
those measured in 2006.
This article captures the national attitudes among adults with young children.
Background- This article provides historical and statistical data regarding the
childhood obesity.
Findings/Conclusions The journal discusses the food attitudes among adults in 2012
and 2006 and speaks on their differences.
Understanding current attitudes and behaviors among parents with young children can
potentially tell us what attitudes and behaviors are being passed on to their children,
how that affects children, and can potentially explain current food attitudes among
children.
