Activity:
Instructional Strategies:
This lesson will use hands on learning. The students must be able to use a ruler to find
measurements around the classroom.
Mathematical Content Background:
In order to be successful in this activity, the students must be able to read inches on a
ruler. As the students gain more experience, they will become more confident taking
measurements and using multiple units of measure. Guidance is a major component in
this lesson. Without guidance, some students may not know how to correctly use a ruler.
Experience is essential in furthering the students mathematical knowledge in the future.
Procedures:
Each student will receive a ruler. Then the teacher will ask the students What is a ruler
used for? (measurement). The teacher will then give the students 5 minutes to walk
around the room and record various measurements of at least 5 objects on their
Measure It!!! worksheet. Before the students record the actual measurement of the
items, they must first predict what they think the measurement will be (in inches). Once
every student has a measurement recorded for each of their 5 items, we will talk about
why some objects do not measure to the nearest whole inch. Then the students will work
individually to complete the game Measuring on abcya.com. Once the students get to
the homepage of the game, they must choose whether they want to play using
centimeters or inches. The teacher should suggest that the first round they play be using
whole inches. The game displays a ruler and a line above it. The students will measure
the line. The student must type in the number of inches (or cm) they think the line
represents. They will either get a green check mark, indicating their answer is correct or
they will receive a red X, indicating that their answer is incorrect. If they get the answer
incorrect they can redo the problem.
Accommodations:
For students who have a difficult time reading the ruler on the website, we will provide a
printout of the ruler that they can use.
For students who have a hard time measuring with a ruler, we will only have them record
measurements for 2-3 objects.
For students who are accelerating at a quicker pace, they can move on to tougher
measurements within centimeters and inches. They can practice measuring whole
numbers, halves, tenths, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths.
