BayyinahBello(born1948)[1]isaHaitianhistorian,teacher,writerandhumanitarianworker,whoinher
earliercareerspent15yearslivingandtravellinginWestAfrica,includingfouryearsinNigeria,aswellas
inBenin,Togo,[1]andothercountriesintheregion.[2]
NowbasedinPortauPrince,sheisthefounderofanorganizationforhistoricalresearchcalledFondation
MarieClaireHeureuseFlicitBonheurDessalines,popularlyknownasFondasyonFlicit(FF),named
afterMarieClaireHeureuseFlicitBonheurDessalinestheEmpressconsortofHaitiandwifeof
revolutionaryleaderofHaitiJeanJacquesDessalines.[2][3]Intheaftermathofthe2010Haitiearthquake,
thenonprofitorganizationFriendsofFondationFlicitwassetuptodirectlysupportFF,focusingon
rebuildingthecountry.[4]SheisalsoaprofessorofhistoryattheStateUniversityofHaiti.[5]

Biography
BayyinahBellowasborninPortauPrince.[6]AftercompletingherprimaryeducationinHaiti,[1]shewent
attheageof12tojoinherfatherinLiberia.ShesubsequentlystudiedinFranceandintheUS,returningto
theAfricancontinenttostudyinNigeria,wheresheearnedamaster'sdegreeinlinguistics,amongother
qualifications.[1]In1969shewentbacktotheUS,wheresheworkedasapublicistandintheevenings
taughtFrench,andafterthebirthofherfirstchildin1970shewroteherfirststoryforchildren.Shewenton
tohavethreeotherchildren,hersonsbeingHashim,Siddiq,Akil[7]andherdaughterAmeerahBello.[1]
ReturningtoHaiti,shetaughtattheuniversityandalsofoundedabilingualschool,CitadelInternational
School.[1]ShesubsequentlytaughtEnglishandArabicinTogo.
In1999shedecidedtostartanorganizationdedicatedtohumanitarian,socialandeducationalworktoaid
thepeopleofHaiti.ItwasnamedFondationMarieClaireHeureuseFlicitBonheurDessalines,usually
shortenedtoFondationFlicit(FF),inhonourofthewifeofJeanJacquesDessalines,whowasaslave
first,learnedtoreadandwrite,thenbegantoteach,workingfortheliberationofthecountry,andultimately
livedtobe110years.[3]Soonafterthe2010Haitiearthquake,theFriendsofFondationFlicitwassetup,
anassociatednotforprofitorganizationthatishelpingHaitianpeopletorebuildtheirowncountry,and
raisesfundsforgrassrootprojectsontheisland.[4]
InApril2014,ProfessorBellowasoneof10honoreesattheGaladesFemmesenFlammesthatcelebrated
Haitianwomen"whoselivesandprofessionalworkhavepavedthewayforabetterHaiti".[8]Asaleading
historian,sheregularlylecturesandparticipatesininternationalconferences,speakingonHaitian
topics,[9][10][11]includingarecentkeynotespeechinBrooklyn,NewYork,attheStanleyEugeneClark
ElementarySchoolforaWomen'sHistoryMonthcelebrationinMarch2015.[5]
