FIELD OBSERVATION ESSAY

Abstract

This paper explores the ten hours of field observation , that I recently, completed. I will explain
the different assignments that were completed during this time. Lastly, I will give my opinions on
the specific classroom that I observed.

When checking the list of school assignments, at the beginning of the semester I became very
nervous. I remember my first thought when I saw the high school I was assigned to, I was

confused. I was confused because I had never heard of CSN High School. College of Southern
Nevada High School is the school I was assigned to. CSN high school is a program for Junior
and Seniors in high school. The students come to CSN to take high school level classes in
addition to general education college credits. Although, this field observation should be with a
special education teacher, CSN high school does not have any type of special education program.
The teacher that I got assigned to was Mr. Havener, he is a senior english teacher. Mr. Havener is
considered a cool teacher, he is able to connect to his students.
Upon arrival to CSN high school, I got lost on campus. CSN high school is located on the north
side of the Cheyenne Campus. The high school is so small its not a part of the buildings. Instead,
the school is located in the portables on the North end parking lot. Once I found the front office
I was taken to meet Mr. Havener. When I first saw Mr. Havener, my first thought was Chris
Kringle. Mr. Havener is husky, with a white beard and rosy cheeks. When I entered his
classroom, I observed barely ten minutes of interaction with him and his students. Within those
ten minutes I could see his passion for teaching, and the students love and respect for him. After
five minutes of talking among themselves, Mr. Havener begins his class period. He uses attention
getters to get the classrooms attention. He might say, yo yo listen up peeps, when he speaks in
slang he knows that the students will focus on him. Of coarse, Mr. Havener only talks with that
slang when trying to creatively get the classrooms attention.
One of the first things I noticed, was how organized Mr. Havener keeps his classroom. He has
daily outlines and the homework and classwork that is to be completed. I noticed that Mr.
Havener does not have any class rules posted. When I asked him about his classroom rules, he
said, I do not need to post rules for my students, they are high school students not 1st graders.
During the entire field observation, not once did a student give Mr. Havener have to discipline
his students. This alone made the time in the classroom pleasant.
In Conclusion, Mr. Haveners classroom and his students were a pleasure to work with. In doing
this field study I wish I was able see a true special education classroom. I did not do anything
hands on while observing in his classroom.
