Elliot, David. "The Turn To Classification In Virtue Ethics: A Review Essay." Studies In
Christian Ethics 29.4 (2016): 477-488. Academic Search Complete. Web. 17 Nov. 2016.
Overall this scholarly article discussed the history of virtue ethics, the approaches to
virtue ethics, and the characteristics of virtue ethics in academics. This article discussed
the history of virtue ethics as well in addition to what is previously listed. This article
painted a picture of Virtue Ethics through its description of its characteristics that went a
little beyond what was found in the Fundamentals of Ethics text. This source was very
valuable because it provided a further insight into the characteristics of Virtue Ethics that
helped articulated the conflict between Virtue Ethics and Utilitarianism better. This fit
into my research well because of this quality.

This text was more of a comparison chart that had listed qualities and thoughts for three
separate ethical theories next to each other. This site showed questions each theory would
ask, example thoughts of the three different ethical theories being compared, and a sideby-side comparison of traits that the ethical theories expressed. This site was very
valuable because it helps give insight into the different thinking between each ethical
perspective. This fit into my research well because I could help see a clear difference in
thinking between ethical theories. It was valuable in my argument because it provided a
brief synopsis of how to think when describing each ethical theory.
Shafer-Landau, Russ. The Fundamentals of Ethics. New York: Oxford UP, 2010. Print.
Both chapters used in this text are summaries of ethical theories, their corresponding
beliefs, and the problems associated with the ethical theories. This book did an in depth
coverage of the main ethical theories, the ones used in the paper were the chapters on
Utilitarianism and Virtue Ethics. This source is extremely valuable in that it provides a
basis of beliefs for each ethical theory described in the book. This fits into my research
because a good majority of the ethics knowledge used originated from this text. This text
helped shaped my argument because it provided the points to which the two ethical
theories were at odds with each other.

Limited Role Of Utility Calculations In Moral Judgment." Plos ONE 11.8 (2016): 1-14.

This scholarly article discusses the issues with utilitarianism. It also expresses where
utilitarianism falls short in regards to moral development and insight through example.
The author suggests that our moral judgments are even non-utilitarian when analyzing
moral behavior. This article was extremely valuable because it showed the flaws with
utilitarianism that helped the argument in favor of virtue ethics. This article fitted into my

research well because it gave good descriptions of where utilitarianism falls short, and
using other sources listed above I was then able to see where virtue ethics was in relation
to these flaws.

Collins, Paul. "The Morality Of Population Control." Eureka Street19.24 (2009): 9-11.

This scholarly article talked about the morality of population control. It talked about
methods of trying to control population such as the one child policy in China. The author
also goes into detail about the morality of women and fertility control in the article as
well. This article was helpful in providing a different perspective on the idea of
population control that I had not considered before. I used this in my research to help
expand my knowledge on the topic in relation to alternative perspectives as well as issues
such as fertility control that I had not thought about before.
PRESSMAN, MICHAEL. "A Defence Of Average Utilitarianism." Utilitas27.4 (2015):
389-424. Academic Search Complete. Web. 6 Dec. 2016.
This was an article that went into great depth of total utilitarianism versus average
utilitarianism. The article talks about maximizing happiness and the implications of each
specific form of utilitarianism. This article also discusses the disagreements that is
brought up by the differing perspectives of Utilitarianism overall. This resource was
useful because it provided an in-depth look at utilitarianism and brought up points that
the Fundamental of Ethics book did not. This aided my research in allowing me to have a
broader view of utilitarianism and allowing me to incorporate this new knowledge into
the topic of population control.
