INDIAN GOLF HISTORY

In India you can play golf almost anywhere, for this outdoors sport is widely played by a cross-section of
people to the country's often-dramatic background. In the hills and high Himalayan fastness, in
metropolitan cities and in small towns, by lakes and forests, or surrounded by tea estates, out in the
desert and in old British cantonments... the flavor of India is visible everywhere that golf in the country is
played.
India was the first country outside of Great Britain to take up the game of golf. The Royal Calcutta Golf
Club, established in 1829, is the oldest golf club in India, and the first outside Great Britain. With the
growing influence of the British in the Indian empire, the eighteenth century saw a mushrooming of new
golf clubs in India. Wherever land was available and grass grew, golf found a new HOME.
The founding of the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in 1829 was followed by the nowdefunct Royal Bombay Golf
Club in 1842 and the Bangalore Golf Club in 1876.The Shillong Golf Club incorporated a golf course in
1886.
Golf had already been played in India for 59 years before the first major course was opened in the USA
and Europe in 1888. By the end of the 19th century, India already had a dozen golf clubs.
What makes golfing in India exciting is the diversity of its courses. Not only does it have the oldest golf
club in the world outside Great Britain, but also the highest, at Gulmarg (altitude 2,700 metres) in
Kashmir. There are golf courses in the mountains, plains, and deserts and at beach resorts. The
environment of each course is unique in its culture and history, highlighting all that makes India a diverse
destination. In fact, it would not be wrong to say that one of the best ways to experience India is through
its golf courses. Most of India's courses are well connected by road, rail, and air, and have excellent
accommodation facilities. Till the 50s, golf clubs in India were affiliated to the Royal Calcutta Golf Club,
which followed the rules of St. Andrews in Scotland. In December 1955, a group of golfers got together to
form the Indian Golf Union as the controlling body for the game.
The Indian Golf Union is now affiliated to the World Amateur Golf Council, and has done a great deal to
promote golfing in the country. In 1957, it started its first training camp at the Royal in Calcutta, where
assistant professionals and caddies were brought from all over the country and trained to teach golf.
The year 1958 is a landmark in the history of Indian Championship was moved away from the Royal
Calcutta Golf Club to be played alternately at Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta. The most important annual
event in the calendar of the Indian Golf Union is the India Open Golf Championship, which was first played
in Delhi in 1964, and won by the Australian golfer, Peter Thompson.
Golfing in India has come a long way, and a large number of Indian players now compete on the
international circuit. Golf enthusiasts continue to grow in numbers, and new courses are added almost
every year. And what could be a better feather in India's golfing cap than the fact that Delhi was chosen
to host the first ever golf competition for the Asian Games in 1982.

WHY INDIA FOR GOLFING?

In India you can play golf almost anywhere, for golf is widely played by a cross-section of
people in the country's often dramatic background. In the hills and high Himalayan vastness,
in metropolitan cities and in small towns, by lakes and forests, or surrounded by tea estates,
out in the desert and in old British cantonments... the flavour of India is visible everywhere
that golf in the country is played. You can stroll off the course to share a cup of piping hot tea
at a 'dhaba', tee off from the highest 18 hole course in the world, watch a peacock dance on a
green or play on a course that is enriched by monuments and beautiful buildings. In India
anything is possible, and playing golf here will enable you to experience the country in a
unique manner.

Department to design a course amongst the picturesque surroundings of the Tombs of the
Lodhi Dynasty of Delhi. The Delhi Golf Club is also home to many professional tournaments
including the Indian Open, part of the prestigious Asian PGA circuit.. The club has every facility
of bar & catering, a swimming pool and recently a new pub and a health club has been added
to provide more facilities to the members.
DLF Golf and Country Resort: The DLF Golf & Country Resort designed by the legendary
Arnold Palmer is ideally located close to the international airport and the New Delhi CBD. This

Grip - Start by checking out the most suitable grip for you, the one that gives you the best
control of the club. This will take a bit of time and effort, but it is vitally important, so start
experimenting.

Commit - One must have have an objective on every shot. Without it one plays to just hit the
ball. Commitment leads to concentration, and concentration leads to great shots. The next
time you are on the course, notice if you have a specific objective before each shot. Most
golfers discover that most, if not all of the time, they just hit it. That has to change if you are
to play the game you are truly capable of. Perhaps finding yourself under a tree where you
need to hit a real low shot with a 4 iron, but only move it 50 yards. This kind of situation
heightens commitment, and improves your concentration.

The Clubhead - Everything that happens to the ball is governed by the clubface, and nothing
else. Learning to control it is going to give you control of your game. How you stand and how
you grip, will have an effect on what you can or cant do with the club and therefore the ball,
and that may lead you to hit a regular shape of shot that you have come to accept, but dont
necessarily like. Therefore, if that shot is a slice, then unfortunately pulling back your right
foot at address will not make it draw, turning more on the backswing will not make it draw,
not even attacking it from the inside will make it draw, only the clubface position at impact
can make it draw.
Exploration and Creativity - Explore everything, from grip, set-up and swing, to trying to
hit as many different shots as possible. To truly explore and be creative you must be willing to
step right out of your comfort zone and try things that are extreme. Like seeing how much you
can hook a 6 iron, or how low it can go, and so on.

Course Management - Having more control of your game means you can navigate your way
round the course more effectively. On every shot you must choose your target and shape of
shot carefully, to make your next shot as easy as possible.

This Golf tour is Ideal for golf lovers and for those who loves discovering new golf
courses all over the world, where they can expand their golfing experience.
In India you can golf almost anywhere, for this outdoors sport is widely played by
cross-section of people to the country's often dramatic background. In the hills and
high Himalayan vastness, in metropolitan cities and in small towns of India, by
lakes and forests, or surrounded by tea estates, out in the desert and in old British
cantonments.

GOLFING INDIAN METROPOLITIAN

Day 01 : BOMBAY
Arrive by international flight. You will be met on arrival and transferred to the hotel.
Day 02 : BOMBAY
Full day at leisure to relax after the international flight..
Day 03 : BOMBAY
Morning : Guided tour of Elephanta Island, in the middle of Bombay's harbour. The island was
inhabited by a colony of monks around the 6th century. Elephanta is famous for its rock-cut
cave temple, and especially for the massive image of Trimurti, the trinity of India mythology.
Afternoon: Guided tour of Bombay, a city at once modern and historical. Built on seven
islands, Bombay came into British hands several centuries ago as part of the dowry of
Catherine de Braganza of Portugal when she married Charles II. The spirit of the Raj still
lingers in the fine old buildings of the Fort area, yet the city is thoroughly Indian. Its 9
million people are drawn from all over India, and Bombay is a lively melting pot of many
cultures. During your tour of the city, it grows on you and unfolds before your eyes. The
sombre majesty of Victorian Gothic architecture seems at peace with the hurly-burly of the
commercial area in its shadows.
Day 04 : BOMBAY
FULL DAY OF GOLFING at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club at
Chembur, opened in 1940 as the implementation of a
masterplan drawn up by international golf star Peter Thompson.
Chembur's greens are the slickest and best in India. The
fairways are much finer and tighter than the lush lies of Delhi
and Calcutta and require a more exacting fairway wood shot.
Additionally, Chembur has the characteristics of variable and
shifting sea breezes and more humidity than in the other cities.
Of its 110 acres, the heart-land and beauty of the course is
"across the road". Here the 441-yard, par 4, fourteenth, played
from the back markers of the championship trees, with its
lightning fast green, and the interesting dog-legged, treeobstructed 430-yard, par 4, fifteenth, are as much a challenge as can be found anywhere. And
as the prevailing southwesterly evening wind freshens the critical closing stages of a match,
the but also of boldness and courage. The annual All India Amateur Golf Championship which
attracts a large number of international competitors was first played here in 1964.
Day 05 : BOMBAY / MADRAS
Morning : At leisure. Afternoon: Arrive Madras and transfer to the hotel.
Day 06 : MADRAS
Morning : A guided tour of Mahabalipuram, a temple-town by the sea, with some excellent
examples of temple architecture. Mahabalipuram, is an ancient coastal port - south of Madras.
Here you will see many sculptures and temples of typical South Indian architectural design;
the Five Radhas - a group of monolithic monuments and animal figures carved out of solid
rock; the Shore Temple, lashed by the waves of the sea; and the huge frescoe, "The Penance
of Bhagirath". .
Afternoon : Guided tour of Madras. Madras was the first toehold of the British East India
Company on India soil. Later it was the center of the Anglo-French Carnatic wars for
supremacy on the Indian sub-continent. You will visit the National Art Gallery and Museum,
housing some of the best examples of early South Indian history --- notable bronzes of the
Chola period. The tour will also take you to the Cathedral of San Thome, the Mylapor Temple
and St. Mary's Church.

Day 07 : MADRAS
FULL DAY GOLFING --- The venue could be the Madras
Gymkhana Club, or the greens at Saidapet, or in the
unique atmosphere of the Guindy Race Club surrounded
by the race - tracks that have been pounded by
thundering horse-hooves, and yet preserve in the center a
virgin green, lush stretch ideal for golfing. There would be
the possibility to arrange a mini-tournament to match
your skills against the many ardent golfers whose love for
the game is nurtured by their sponsors, viz. old
commercial houses of British origin.

Day 08 : MADRAS / CALCUTTA

Full day at leisure to relax at the hotel's swimming pool or to explore Madras on your own or
for shopping --- Madras would be an excellent place to buy cottons and silks.
Evening : Arrive Calcutta and transfer to the hotel.
Day 09 : CALCUTTA
Morning : A late morning visit to Mother Teresa's Ashram.
Afternoon: Half day city tour of Calcutta.
Day 10 : CALCUTTA
FULL DAY OF GOLFING
Day 11 : CALCUTTA / DELHI
Morning : At leisure
Afternoon : Arrive New Delhi and transfer to the hotel.
DAY 12 DELHI DEPART
