Your Target:
At the end of the activity, you will gain competence in preparing instructional
materials (hand-outs) that are appropriate to the learning content of your lessons.

Did you know?

Hand-outs are one of the most time efficient instructional materials that a
teacher can use. Instead of spending so much time writing things on the chalkboard
or scanning pages on a textbook, preparing hand-outs makes a teachers job easier
as it allows him/her to proceed directly on the lesson and focus on discussing its
significant points without having difficulties in illustrating difficult or essential
concepts. Moreover, it can easily be stored for future use in other classes or for
teaching the same lesson next time (content should be updated though). On the
students part, they can have these things compiled for latter use as reviewers for
your quizzes, exams and future references!

Your Map:
With a lot of reflective thinking coupled with your creativity, you can design
hand-outs that will truly work well to make learning effective. You will see that
preparing hand-outs is not just any paper work. When you produce high quality
hand-outs and eventually try them out, you will discover that indeed, paper
works! To reach your target, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Review existing hand-outs and prepare your own for a selected topic (using
the previously given guidelines)
Step 2: Describe your hand-outs
Step 3: Present it to your FS teacher before reproducing it

Quickstart!

Before you begin making your own hand-outs, be sure to read and answer the
following hand-out planning guide questions below
1.) What topic do I like to work on?
2.) For what grade or year level is my hand out for?
3.) What components do I include in my outline? (e.g. brief description of the handout, objectives, and its major contents, and good features in bullet form)
4.) What type of graphic organizers/flow-charts/schemas do I need to use?
5.) What references do I use? (e.g. books, periodicals, websites, etc.)

Remember:
Your hand-out plan must come with a written description of the following:
1.) Grade/year level, subject area, and subject matter for which it is best used
2.) The good features of your hand-outs
3.) Learning activities required before and or after the hand-out is used

Your Target:
At the end of the activity, you will be decisive in terms of using on-line
resource materials and interactive programs to aid your teaching instruction.

Did you know?

There are many students today who are highly capable of using the
computer more than ourselves as teachers. As much as we would want to
deny it, this is the truth that we have to face nowadays. Thus, it is no longer
surprising that most of them do not appreciate our lessons because our
approach seems to be light years away from their generation. This in a way
explains why they are sometimes (if not most of the time) inattentive in our
classes. As teachers, we must then equip ourselves with the up-to-date
knowledge on the current teaching trends where we can learn how to utilize
computers to promote effective learning rather than just letting our students
use it for games sake. The internet is a rich source of highly interactive sites
that can act as your sidekick in assuring optimum learning performance
among our students especially at this era when computers have already
become a part of their day-to-day life and learning experience.
Your Map:
For this activity, explore the virtual world and find worthwhile
interactive learning resources through these easy steps:
Step 1: Observe a class and take note of the topic being discussed
Step 2: Surf the net to find appropriate sites that can provide support
materials and/or interactive programs on the topic
Step 3: Evaluate the materials or programs
Step 4: Reflect on your FS experience

Quickstart!
Before you begin surfing the net for possible web sites, be sure to read the
following first

When observing the class, take note of the difficulties that the students
encounter in the lesson. This is one of the key factors that you need to
consider in looking for a website later on. Remember that facilitating
the teaching and especially learning process is you major concern as a
teacher. Dont just take note of the topic and rush immediately to an
internet shop to look for available websites related to it.
Take note as well of the kind of learners comprising the class. If they
happen to be very skilled in using the computers, finding an interactive
website which they can work on by themselves is already fine. But, if
they happen to me novice or beginners, be sure to find those sites
offering a more simple approach to prevent the possibility of boring or
discouraging them at the end.
After obtaining a number of websites, make sure that you have listed
not only the websites, but also other important details like the ones
you are required to write on the forms found on the next page. Aside
from compliance reasons, these bits of information would as well give

you an ample idea about validity of the sites content. Remember that
just because a site contains related exercises to the lesson you have
observed doesnt mean it is already appropriate as a source. Thus,
verifying its content is another important concern that you as a teacher
should not neglect.
