Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements
The Praxis Core Exam requirements include 3 sections, Reading, Writing, and
Math. Each of these sections must be passed to enter Bachelors level education programs
at UNLV, NSC, or UNR. The passing scores for each section of the Praxis Core Exam are
as follows: Reading 156, Writing 162, and Math 150.
Exam Preparation
I took the practice exams for each of the Praxis Core Exam sections. I did not
prepare for the tests, and it reflects in my low scores in both Reading and Math sections.
Had I better prepared for these practice exams, I am confident that I would have done
much better. I read about each section of the exam as required, but, reading about the
exams is not a substitute for preparing for them. Reading about the exams informs you as
to what individual concepts are covered so you can prepare for what will be on the test.
The Math I found particularly challenging because many of the concepts covered are
things I learned many years ago. It is important to refresh yourself in how to work
through these equations. The Math section is where I need the most practice and
improvement. Although I passed the Writing section, it is equally important that I prepare

for this section as well. If I put the time in and study, then I should be able to produce a
very strong score.
Exam Results
My Reading practice exam result was 55% with a total of 31 questions correct out
of 56. Key Ideas and Details was my lowest scoring category, at 47% and where I need
the most review. Craft, Structure, and Language Skills was my strongest section at 61%,
but still reflects improvement needed.
In the Writing portion, the result was 73%. This is considered a borderline passing score.
Text types, Purposes, and Production was my weakness category at 27%. This is where I
need to focus my study. Language and Research skills for Writing was a much stronger
category for me as I scored 70%.
The Math portion result was 58%. Although the Number and Quantity category scored
me at 80%, the remaining 3 categories scored me at 54% or lower. Areas such as algebra,
geometry, and statistics all need much improvement.
Future Exam Preparation
To pass the official Praxis Core Exam, it will be necessary to allocate time in my
week to study for each section. I think two hours of study a week, working on one section
at a time. It will be important for me to test and re-test myself in each section until I reach
an acceptable passing percentage for each. I will use Ed Ready for the Math as it seems to
be a great tool, and will most likely purchase the practice materials from Praxis as well.
Depending on how far that takes me, I will decide whether to sign up for the Praxis Core
Review courses at CSN or obtain a tutor to provide additional help.
