Job: (01) To make a square file

At first to hold the Mile steal rode and count the 52 mm length with the help
of the slide calipers. Then tightening the mile steal rode with table vise and
start to cut it with hacksaw. After cutting the mile steal rode at 52 mm then
tightening it in the table vise and use the rough file to create the shape and
the shape will come in 5mm in each side. Then we get a square file.

Stress: (wcob) Like pressure. Mathematically stress may be defined as the force
per unit area . i.e, p=P/A.
Where, p =Intensity of stress, P= Load of force acting on the body, and A= Cross
sectional area of the body.
Types of Stress: Though there are many kinds of stresses, yet the following two
types of stresses are important from the subject point of view:
(a) Tensile stress, (b) Compressive stress.

(a) Tensile stress:

P
When a section is subjected to two equal and opposite pulls, as a result of which the body
tends to lengthen, as shown in Fig. the stress induced is called tensile stress.

(b) Compressive stress:

body tends to shorten its length, as shown Fig. the stress induced is called compressive

i.e. strain e = dl/L

Classification of Strain:
Strain is mainly two types, they are--------------(i) Primary strain/Linear strain
(ii) Secondary strain/Lateral strain
(i) Primary strain/Linear strain: The deformation of the bar, per unit of length in
the direction of the force , i.e. dl/L is known as primary or linear strain.

i.e. strain e = dl/L
dl= dl1+dl2
Where, e = Linear strain, dl =change of length of the body and L = Original length of the

(ii) Secondary strain/Lateral strain: Every stress is always accompanied by a
strain in its own direction, and an opposite kind of strain in every direction at right angle
to it is known as lateral strain.
x1

x= x1+x2
Lateral strain = x/y , where, x =change of length of the body and y = Original length of

For making square key/ square/ female part/ male part/ lab join/
cross join / Range the raw material is a metallic bar.

Required tools and equipment: 1. Table vice.

2. Hack saw.
3. Emery cloth.
4. Slide calipers.
5. File.

Procedure: At first we take a metallic bar and cut it more than 52 mm, 15 mm
Respectively from accepted. Now it will be the primary shape like figure.

Use of M/C: No machine is used in this practical.

Conclusion: By this job we can acquire initial knowledge that are related with
engineering and technology side and we are also meted with some tools which are used
for the purpose of the job and put us in a helpful stage of practical engineering and
technical life.
