Siegel, Eric, dir. Most Violent Jail Inmates: Hidden America Inside Rikers Island (Part 1)
Youtube. ABC News, 26 May 2016. Web. 20 Nov. 2016. This video of clip from a longer
broadcast investigation, by Diane Sawyer, investigates the affect prison life has on
inmates. Along with demonstrating affects, this mentions that 57% of inmates in Rikers
Island alone are incarcerated for non-violent crimes. I found this source on the ABC
News YouTube Channel. I searched for ABC News Nightline jail investigations on
YouTube. This video clip is from an investigative journalism broadcast show called
Nightline on ABC where a non-bias party like Diane Sawyer investigate issues that arent
brought into mainstream media as often. In this video, Sawyer is discussing life in a
violent prison. This source in helpful for my research paper because it will further
emphasize the problems of institutionalization minorities face in prison, which further
examine the idea of modern slavery in America.
13TH. Dir. Ava DuVernay. Perf. N/A. Netflix, 2016. Documentary. This documentary discusses
the true meaning and affect of the thirteenth amendment of the United Sates Constitution.
It mentions the creation of systematic oppression against people of color and a new kind
of slavery in prisons. I found this source on Netflix before starting this project. The topic
intrigue me so I decided to write my research essay on this topic as well. This source is

credible because it validates the arguments with accurate historic background and
accurate and current statistics. This source is a significant contributor for writing my
research essay because it will help me further validate my argument about the thirteenth
amendment as well.
American Originals. The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863. Transcribe.archives.gov. National
Archives and Records Administration. NARA, Web. 19 Nov. 2016. This short website
work discusses the reasons why the Emancipation Proclamation was made and what this
document said. It specifies that only rebellious states, which were states that seceded
from the Union, were states that were declared free states after the victory of the Union. It
also discusses the reasons for a formal document that rules out slavery across the land.
That formal document was the thirteenth amendment of the Constitution. I found this
source in the Google search engine. I searched for the meaning of the Emancipation
Proclamation and what does the Emancipation Proclamation say. This source can be
considered reliable because it is an official government source. This source will be useful
in my research essay because I will also be discussing the reasons why the thirteenth
amendment was created in the first place. This source will be mostly used for context.
Hagler, By Jamal. "8 Facts You Should Know About the Criminal Justice System and People of
Color." Center for American Progress. Center for American Progress, 28 May 2015. Web.
23 Nov. 2016. In this article, Hagler discusses the inequality of the Justice system against
people of color; however, this article is mostly fact based. This source is validated by
statistics that have been taken in the last decade. These statistics demonstrate the onesidedness of the American government. I found this source in the Google search engine. I
searched for ratio of black men to white men prisons in the US, then clicked on fourth

suggestion entitled The 10 Mostly Starting Fact, then that source took me to a more
recent article, 8 Facts You Should Know, which is the source I ultimately will be
using. This source uses evidence and studies that have been done by ligament people,
such as the U.S. Sentencing Commission and Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights
Under Law. I will be using this source mostly for the solid facts about racial
discrimination in the justice system and how that leads a drastically uneven ratio of
people of color to white people in American prisons and how that further emphasizes the
idea that slavery is still existing through the 13th amendments loop hole.
"A Brief History of the Drug War." A Brief History of the Drug War | Drug Policy Alliance. Drug
Policy Alliance: All Rights Reserved, 2016. Web. 23 Nov. 2016. This source talks about
the history about the War on Drugs in the United States and the specific presidents that
took on this war. This article discusses the policies passed for this war on drugs and how
they are affecting America in recent years. I found this source on the Google search
engine. I searched for war on drugs and this source was this second suggestion. This
source demonstrates legitimacy because it discusses history and its affects as non-bias as
possible. I will use this source in my research paper as historical context to the War on
Drug and how t has specifically affect people of color. This will further demonstrate the
systematic oppression against African Americans in America.
The Leadership Conference Education Fund, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human
Rights. Falling Further Behind Combating Racial Discrimination in America. Geneva:
Wade Henderson, 2014. Web. This report provides more solid evidence on the
discrimination against African Americans in specific details and what government should
do to combat it. It discusses incidents and mentions the growing epidemic of police

brutality. I found this source through another I will also be using. The article 8 Fact You
Should Know sources this report. This source is factual. It will help my research
paper by emphasizing that racial oppression has not diminished it has only evolved into
something different but still should be recognized as racism.
