Input Worksheet- Lesson 1

Peer up with someone who sits next to you, read and annotate the
definitions given.

The Valley of Ashes- Locates between West Egg and New York City. The
dumping ground for industrial waste, reflects the evils of industry. It represents the
hardships of the poor and the carelessness of the rich.

West Egg- Wealthy town in Long Island, home to new money people.

East Egg- Wealthy town in Long Island, home to older and more established
families.

The Roaring 20s- Period after the World War I. It was a period of sustained
economic prosperity with a distinctive cultural edge in the United States.

Prohibition- The ban on alcohol, although meant to completely stop the


production and consumption of it, backfired and made the desire for it that
much more powerful. This led to a black market and the bootlegging of
alcohol.

Homework- Lesson 1
Directions:
Imagine that you are someone who lives in the 1920s time period,
you can be a bootlegger, a car fixer, a woman, etc. Write a diary entry (at
least 2 paragraphs) to explain how life is like living in the United States
during that time period.

Directions:
1) On the light bulb cutout, write a long term goal that you would
like to achieve in the future (Ex. Buying a house, buying a car...)
2) Color the light bulb green
3) Tape the light bulb somewhere around the classroom where
you will be able to see in your seat from a distance

to identify the historical context, the symbols, and the characters that were
presented in the novel. The review must meet standards of creativity and
professionalism, as well as contain accurate evidence and information to
help readers reflect on the novel.
