SLIIT is today recognized as a world class degree awarding institute delivering a range of undergraduate & postgraduate
programmes in Computing, Business and Engineering. Students at SLIIT benefit from a state of the art teaching and learning
environment and modern purpose built facilities. The new Engineering Faculty building and Hospitality Management School
are our latest additions.
Our Degrees programmes are approved by the University Grants Commission Sri Lanka, in addition to which we offer
foreign degree programs of our partner universities. Qulifications with prestigious foreign universities in UK, Australia,
US and Canada has given students many career pathways to gain world class degrees at a very reasonable cost. Our
internationalization efforts have attracted students from Asian & African regions to our campuses at Malabe and Kollupitiya,
further enriching the mixed cultural experience that SLIIT offers.
A key strategy of the institute is to lay emphasis on research-focus teaching in all our disciplines. We foster a vibrant research
culture through active research groups led by senior academics to meet this objective.
With our fully fledged campuses at Malabe and Kollupitiya and centers in Matara, Kandy, Jaffna and Kurunegala we are ready
to further expand and offer a wide range of degree pathways to students.
Ranked as the Sri Lankas best Higher Education Institute by the LMD survey. We strive to provide our students a complete
education which introduces them to the frontiers of knowledge and provides them with the skills and disciplines necessary
to meet the challenges of their chosen careers

SLIIT is widely recognized as the premier higher education institute in Sri Lanka. Its faculty, its teaching -learning environment
and the range of education options it offers clearly places SLIIT in a league of its own. Our highly qualified and experienced
staff, continue to be one of our greatest strengths while the content of our academic programmes is second to none. As an
undergraduate at SLIIT you will learn in a stimulating educational and research focused environment. Our strong sense of
community binds students and staff together in one family. Most importantly SLIIT enjoys a reputation for producing highly
employable and well-rounded graduates.
Last year SLIIT had the unique distinction of being recognized as the first higher education institution in the Country to have
its B.Sc. (Hons) Programmes in Information Technology accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) - an
internationally respected benchmark awarded to high quality programmes which pave the way to a chartered engineer status.
SLIIT also now has the distinction of being recognized as a PhD and MPhil Degree awarding body by the University Grants
Commission of Sri Lanka.
The Industry Consultative Boards established by SLIIT have the participation of leading professionals and industrialists in
the Country and serve to ensure that our academic programmes are continuously upgraded and re-engineered to meet the
changing needs of the industry and the Country. The scope and reach of our programmes have widened and today we offer
degree programmes in Architecture and Quantity Surveying. .
At SLIIT we encourage our students to take part in the wide range of extracurricular activities we have to offer - over 20
different types of sporting activities; a wide range of societies and clubs. We believe that an education institute should provide
an experience of living as well as an opportunity for learning and take pride in the fact that our students have excelled both
in the classroom and on the field. The multi-cultural and multinational community that makes up SLIIT further enriches the
lives of students at SLIIT.

Business Analytics
Business organizations of the 21st century maintain large databases with information about their customers, supply chain
and competitors. They strive to establish a competitive advantage by using such information to make better business
decisions. Data-driven companies treat their data as a strategic asset.
Business analytics is the discipline of applying quantitative analytical models to analyse data, particularly found in large
volumes,to help make better business decisions.Successful business analytics depends on data quality, skilled analysts who
understand the technologies as well as the business and an organizational commitment to data-driven decision making.
In the recent past, career opportunities for business analytics graduates have exploded as major organizations have
adopted data driven and technology focused approaches.

Degree PROGRAMMES
Field of Study:
The Honours Degree spreads over
four years and enables a student to
gain a thorough knowledge in the
selected field of study.
The student is expected to undergo
six months of on the job training
within a scheduled period prior to
completion of the degree programme.
The programme will allow students
to opt for one of four major fields
of study to suit their preference and
performance. Fields of study listed as
shown below:
Civil Engineering
Electrical and Electronic
Engineering
Materials Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
(Mechatronics Specialization)
Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering is a professional engineering discipline
that deals with the design, construction and maintenance
of the physical and built environment necessary for the
benefit and welfare of our society. It is concerned with such
works as buildings, roads, railways, bridges, dams, reservoirs,
tunnels, waterways, underground structures, ports and offshore structures.
The civil engineering study programme is an excellent
blend of scientific and civil engineering fundamentals and
the practical skills essential to begin effective professional
practice on graduation.
The first two years of the programme are primarily
concerned with developing a foundation in mathematics,
sciences, basic engineering sciences, and practical skills
essential to pursue studies in the field of civil engineering.
The third year includes applied engineering units in
structural analysis and design, materials, geotechnical
engineering, construction engineering, hydraulics and
professional practice.
The final year covers field specific subjects in addition to
subjects relating to construction management, industrial
relations, contract law, cost estimation and finance. Also,
students carryout a research project and comprehensive
design project as part of the final year.

47
Materials Engineering
Materials engineering is concerned with the design,
fabrication and testing of engineering materials. It is a
discipline that purely touched by science of materials.
Materials engineers invent, develop, study and test
on materials, which directly influence technological
advancement, improve the quality of human life, and impact
the ability to overcome environmental challenges.
As the history defined by the primary materials used
by people such as stone, bronze, iron, plastic, silicon,
biomaterials and nanomaterials, it is often new materials
that open the door to new technologies, whether they
are in civil, chemical, construction, nuclear, aeronautical,
agricultural, mechanical, biomedical, electrical or electronic
engineering.
48

Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering is a highly diversified professional
Engineering discipline encompassing manufacturing,
automation, robotics, automotive engineering, energy
conversion and the like. Mechanical engineering includes
the science and art of formulation, design, development
and control of systems and components involving
thermodynamics, mechanics, fluid mechanics, mechanisms,
manufacturing and energy. The first two years of the
programme are, primarily concerned with developing a
foundation in mathematics, sciences, basic engineering
sciences and practical skills essential to pursue studies in
the field of mechanical engineering. The third year includes
applied engineering units in thermal engineering, materials,
automatic control, mechanical design and engineering
management. In the final year students can focus their
studies on specialized areas including manufacturing
engineering (ME) and energy engineering (EE).

Soft Skills+
Faculty of Business, annually
organizes Soft Skills + inter-school
quiz competition and soft skills
workshop to spark the interest on
soft skills whilst improving the general
knowledge among school children.
Secondary schools tend to
concentrate on the imparting of
knowledge, on analysis, and on
synthesis. Though these are valuable,
soft skills such as team work, problem
solving, creativity and thinking out
of the box are quite important for
everyone to succeed. An emphasis on
competitive examinations leaves a little
time for the development of these
important skill sets. This is the main
reason for initiating this programme.
The event is open to students from
grade 11 to grade 13 representing
state, private and international schools.
All winners and participants are to
receive certificates and prizes.
In Soft Skills+ 2015, after hours of
battling for the title, Ananda College,
Colombo, secured first place in the
quiz competition with Bandaranayake
College, Gampaha and Musaeus
College, Colombo coming in second
and third respectively.
Commenting on the event, Dean
Faculty of Business states, We
organize this programme every
year for school children, to develop
their soft skills by enhancing their
knowledge on a wide range of
disciplines, such as problem solving,
team work, out of the box thinking,
general knowledge and creativity
which are not included in the school
curriculum.
This is organized as a Corporate Social
Responsibility initiative of SLIIT.
