Pre-K Newsletter

Dear Parents,
Pre-Kindy has started the new unit How we express
ourselves.
Central idea:
Stories can give us pleasure and information
Lines of Inquiry:
The elements of a story
How children enjoy stories differently
How stories can make you feel
Trans-disciplinary skills children are going to
acquire and apply during this unit are:
Communication skills : Presenting and Listening
Self-management skills : Comprehension
We will inquire into the elements of story, how we
enjoy stories differently and how stories make us
feel. Through this inquiry the children will learn how
to be communicators and reflective. We will also
foster enthusiasm and creativity. In this unit children
will explore stories through various media such as
books, videos, pictures, puppets and the arts.

Mathematics
Alongside the Unit:
Recognize numbers on the page.
Count how many characters are in the story.
Sequence events of the story
Introducing positional language in the story such as:
on, under, in, over, around and behind.
Collect and interpret information throughout our
unit of Stories. (Preferences of characters, favorite
stories, etc.)
Stand-alone mathematics:
Data handling: Classifying and sorting based on size.
(big, medium, small)
Measurement: Descriptive language; heavier and
lighter.
Shape and space: Introduce 2D shapes (circle,
square, rectangle, oval, and triangle)
Number: Read, write, model count, compare, order
1 to 10. Before / after to 5.
Pattern: Review AB pattern

Collecting data

Children will also learn to re-tell the stories through


drama, role-play, painting, pictures and sequencing
events in the stories.
At home, you can help your children by reading
stories and discussing the stories with them.
The summative assessment will be group
performances of stories they have learnt.

Students interviewed people around the school to get


information of their favorite story.

Social Studies
Children will gain an understanding that stories can give information.
The children will discuss emotions and attitudes shared in stories to
understand their own emotions and attitudes.

Language
Listening: Listen to stories and each other.
Speaking: Retell stories, share stories, greetings. Discuss parts of a book
(author and illustrator).
Reading: Shared reading and pre reading activities.
Writing: Pre writing activities, fine motor activities. Sign in daily.
Viewing: Share original stories through drawings and discussions with
the class.

PSPE
Children will use movement to express their feelings and stories. Loco
motor activities.

RELIGION
Islam:
Listen to stories related to manners in Islam
Catholic:
Story of the first Christmas
Christian:
Story about How the Israelis leave Egypt
Christmas story; the birth of Jesus.

MUSIC
Sing some traditional songs such as; Kodok ngorek (Java), Teganangtegining (Lombok) and O Pio ode-ode (Sumbawa)

SBB ECE Play Dough Recipe


3 Cups Flour
1 Cup Cold Water

ART FESTIVAL 2016/2017


This years art festival has the theme Traditions
around the World.
Pre Kindys performance and visual art will all be based
on New Zealand traditions.
The students have already begun learning the songs
they will be performing and are doing really well! To
help the children learn the songs we have put the words
to both songs in this newsletter, they will also be
shared on the Pre Kindy weebly page in video format so
you can hear the music. Please encourage your child to
practice these songs if they want to at home.

All Pre Kindy children will need to


wear white tops, black bottoms and
they will have bare feet for our
class performance.

are the most highly prized of all traditional
New Zealand Mori garments and are
regarded as family and personal heirlooms.
Action song One Day a Taniwha.
Taniwha are water spirits in New Zealand
Maori legends. They may live in rivers, lakes
or the sea. They are often regarded by local
people as guardians of that stretch of water.
Poi song & dance Rere Atu
Poi is a form of dance within the Maori
culture of New Zealand, the poi dance is
often used in traditional ceremonies.
