01

Evolution of Switches
In 1989, Kalpana launched the rst model of a 10 M Ethernet
switch. An IP switch forwards packets based on MAC
addresses. Switches eliminate the drawbacks of broadcast
storms caused by hubs and signicantly improve bandwidth
efciency.
In 1995, 100 M switches were introduced and vendors began
to rapidly develop newer and better switches. Today, in the
21st century, Ethernet-based devices such as computers,
servers, printers, IP phones, and wireless Access Points (APs),
place even higher requirements on switch forwarding capacity.
GE, 10 GE, and now 40 GE switches have been launched
in succession, and 100 GE capability is on its way. This
brochure highlights Huaweis in-depth understanding of the
development of switch technologies. In addition to enhancing
forwarding capacity, the development of switches has taken
the following directions:

Service innovation
Switch vendors must understand new and emerging
services and have the capability to integrate all devices
involved in networking. In addition, vendors must have
deep insights into market directions and build strong R&D
capabilities to meet these challenges.
With more than two decades' extensive experience in the
communications eld, Huawei has developed deep insights
and powerful R&D capabilities. Huawei is dedicated to
providing excellent products and solutions for enterprise
users.

Energy saving
Broadband Internet, Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC),
and IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) are becoming widely
used, resulting in a sharp increase in bandwidth. As the
transmission rate of network communications devices
continues to increase, so does their power consumption.
As for switches in densely packed data centers, vendors
must take energy savings into consideration while also
focusing on the switches high reliability, scalability, and
service processing capabilities. Huawei switches use a
unique energy-saving design, and have interchangeable
modules and components. These switches use Huawei's
patented device sleeping (port sleeping and complete
equipment sleeping) technology, which greatly reduces
energy consumption and improves heat dissipation
efciency without compromising performance and stability.

Reliable devices and technologies lay the foundation for a

reliable network architecture, which in turn ensures stable,
long-term operation and minimizes potential network
failures.

Huawei Sx700 series switches prioritize the provisioning of

high-bandwidth and high-performance services. By integrating
advanced reliability, security, and energy-saving technologies,
Huawei Sx700 series switches are powerfully scalable,
enabling the continuous evolution of enterprise networks.
These technologies improve enterprise users efciency and
minimize network down-time, which reduces Total Cost of
Ownership (TCO).

Highly reliable devices include dual Main Processing Units

(MPUs), redundant power and fan modules, and distributed
forwarding cards to implement fast data switching and
high service continuity. Reliable technologies include endto-end fast fault diagnosis, trafc monitoring on all nodes,
and network trafc optimization. More than 6.5 million
reliable, stable Huawei switches have been deployed on
networks worldwide. Huawei provides comprehensive

Traditional GE campus networks must be upgraded to provide the bandwidth needed for cloud
computing and multimedia applications. This document analyzes the growing trend of using 10 GE

10 GE/40 GE Ports for Bandwidth-Hungry

ICT Applications

A Gartner report (Figure 1) shows that in 2012, the supply of

GE ports exceeded the supply of Fast Ethernet (FE) ports in the
enterprise market, and that predicted demand for GE ports will
continue to increase while demand for FE ports will decrease.

As bandwidth-hungry Information and Communications

Technology (ICT) applications have sprung up, faster Ethernet
standards continue to be developed. IEEE802.3 (10 Mbits/s)
was dened in 1982, and 30 years later, IEEE802.3ba (40/100
G) was developed. As shown in Figure 2, 10 GE/40 GE ports
are being introduced faster than were FE/GE ports. And soon,
the 100 G industry chain will become established, satisfying
users' requirements for the latest available ICT.

The majority of GE ports are used at the access layer on

an enterprise network to provide gigabit-to-the-desktop,
which has already become very popular in modern enterprise
networks.
The gigabit-to-the-desktop solution often uses GE port binding
at the aggregation layer to aggregate trafc and combine
aggregation and core layers. Initially, this transition solution
protects equipment investments, but in the long run reduces
port efciency. For example, a 24-port GE access switch
connects to terminals with ten GE ports. The switch must also
connect to the Internet with ten GE ports to ensure sufcient
uplink bandwidth. Switch ports available to terminals are
therefore reduced by about half, resulting in a low Return On
Investment (ROI). Larger bandwidth 10 GE ports used at the
aggregation layer can address this problem.

2012

Here is where the 10 GE/40 GE industry stands today:

Access, aggregation, and core switches supplied by

mainstream vendors provide high-density 10 GE boards,
while aggregation and core switches support high-density
40 GE boards. Huawei S9700 series switches lead the
industry, providing 480 10 GE ports.

Cost per 10 GE/40 GE port is decreasing signicantly.

Currently, the cost of one 10 GE port is much lower than
the cost of ten GE ports. Because 10 GE/40 GE ports are
more efcient than GE ports, enterprises can reduce the
cost of constructing a non-convergence 10 GE campus
network.

Demand for 10 GE ports continues to increase. Gartner

predicts that the supply of 10 GE ports will increase at a
Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 45.2 percent
from 2012 to 2015.

Bandwidth Upgrades Improve Enterprises'

ICT Capabilities
With improved bandwidth, enterprises can deploy additional
services, and each bandwidth upgrade enhances their ICT
capabilities.

In the FE era, enterprises focused only on non-real-time

services that consume low bandwidth, including network
interconnection, le sharing, and email.

In the GE era, many enterprises have integrated various ICT

applications, and some enterprises have entered the data
management phase. An integrated enterprise ofce system
that supports video conferencing and VoIP to improve
work efciency and reduce Operating Expense (OPEX).

In the 10 GE era, enterprises can develop new services

to ensure continuous information improvement. The
development of the following services will increase:

Spontaneous desktop telepresence conference

systems: the rst choice for enterprises to improve
work efciency and reduce OPEX. For example,
HD monitors and cameras can be deployed on
developers desktops. Developers in different regions
can communicate with each other through a desktop
telepresence system to speed up product development.

Desktop cloud, cloud computing, and cloud storage:

simplify IT operation and maintenance and reduce
costs.

Internet of Things (IoT): helps enterprises develop

services.

Flexible high-speed mobile ofce: helps enterprises

easily communicate with customers and provide quick
support with, for example, the Bring Your Own Device
(BYOD) ofce mode.

High-bandwidth cloud, multimedia, and mobile services will

become mainstream services on enterprise-wide campus
networks.
Wireless access enables multiple users to simultaneously access
a network through an AP. Access bandwidth of 802.11n APs
has exceeded 600 Mbits/s. 802.11ac APs providing 1 Gbits/s
access bandwidth will soon go to market. Moreover, wireless
networks have seen widespread deployment on enterprise
campuses, resulting in an explosive growth in data trafc.
For example, 1080p full-HD video requires 10 Mbits/
s bandwidth (ve times that of SD video), yet the service
experience cannot meet customer expectations. Super HD
video (for example, Blu-ray) will become the most popular, but
requires between 50 Mbits/s and 100 Mbits/s bandwidth. Such
services exceed the capabilities of traditional networks.
When the aggregation layer uses GE ports or GE port binding,
it cannot meet the requirements of new services. To develop
new services and promote ICT evolution on enterprise campus
networks, the aggregation layer must use 10 GE ports, high
bandwidth, and the large buffer capacity of 10 GE switches.

Figure 5 shows a three-layer architecture that consists of the

core, aggregation, and access layers. This architecture applies
to medium- and large-scale enterprises. Figure 6 shows a twolayer architecture targeting small-scale enterprises that consists
of core/aggregation and access layers.

Mainstream switch vendors provide 10 GE port switches. In

addition to 10 GE port switches, enterprises need to focus on
the following points during network deployment:

Requirements differ from industry to industry. Vendors

that provide end-to-end solutions help enterprises reduce
the cost of network design, deployment, and Operation
and Maintenance (O&M). Huawei provides end-to-end,
differentiated 10 GE cloud campus network solutions to
help enterprises improve their ICT capabilities.

Easy device upgrades

The core layer tends to use 100 GE ports because of the
high bandwidth requirements of some new services. To
protect enterprise investments, existing core switches are
required to support 100 GE boards. However, very few
mainstream vendors can do that. Huawei's entire series of
industry-leading core and aggregation switches allow for
smooth upgrades to 100 GE ports.

Low power consumption

Enhanced forwarding capability consumes additional
device power. Campus network designers must focus
on energy conservation without service interruptions.
Assuming that an enterprise has 240 workdays each year,
and its enterprise network is in use for ten hours every
day, the enterprise network operates for 2,400 hours each
year. If no energy saving solution is used, switches work
continuously and run 8,760 (365 x 24) hours. Network
devices, especially access devices, that can enter the
sleeping state can reduce power consumption. Huawei
uses the Advanced Hibernation Management (AHM)
solution, which integrates sleeping and Energy Efcient
Ethernet (EEE) technologies. Huawei switches at the
access, aggregation, and core layers can enter the sleeping
state, reducing power consumption by 63 percent for the
entire network.

Campus Network Core Layer

Stepping into the 40 GE Era
The standard for 40 GE (IEEE802.3ba) was released in 2010.
Two years later, 40 GE technology has become established at
a rate much faster than FE, GE, and 10 GE. The reason is that
enterprises have increasingly high demands for bandwidth
with new digital services such as High-Denition (HD) media,
mobile ofce, digital enterprise, and cloud services.
Switch vendors have introduced 40 GE ports, and so campus
network architecture has evolved into a 10 GE network
architecture that consists of GE access, 10 GE aggregation,
and 40 GE core switches.
40 GE ports are also being used in data centers. As shown in
gure 1, when an enterprise's IT services are migrating to a
cloud platform, the horizontal trafc model (PC to PC/server)

is replaced by a vertical trafc model (PC/thin terminal to data

center) on campus networks. When HD media services, for
example, telepresence and campus video surveillance, are
applied to the campus, data trafc over the campus network
increases by hundreds of times. To transmit large volumes
of trafc immediately, the enterprise must use 40 GE boards
or boards with a higher transmission rate. Huawei S9700
series switches deploy up to 96 40 GE ports, which enable
enterprises to build a high-speed, yet simple and reliable 40 GE
core layer.
High-speed, large-volume trafc transmission is the key to
building a exible IT system. In future ICT developments, 40
GE and even 100 GE boards will be deployed on enterprise
campus networks.

Enterprises are turning increasingly to desktop cloud, cloud computing, and cloud storage to simplify IT operation and maintenance,
reduce costs, and improve work efciency. Gartner forecasts that 65% of enterprises worldwide will have deployed desktop clouds
by 2015. Cloud applications and multimedia require high-quality network infrastructures to provide a delay-free user experience.
Huawei S9700 series switches are high-end terabit routing switches designed for multi-service convergence. S9700 switches can be
deployed in data centers and the core layer of medium- and large-sized enterprise campus networks.

High 40 GE Port Density: Eliminating

Bandwidth Bottlenecks

Highly Reliable, Multidimensional Design:

Ensuring High-Quality Cloud Services

Cloud computing is the future of the Internet. To reduce

network delay and increase response speed, cloud computing
data centers use a two-layer (core and access) network
architecture to replace the traditional three-layer (core,
aggregation, and access) network architecture. Devices at the
core layer use 40 GE ports, and devices at the access layer use
10 GE ports. Compared to 10 GE ports, 40 GE ports provide
higher efciency and bandwidth. S9700 provide a maximum
of 96 40 GE ports to help enterprises eliminate bandwidth
bottlenecks.

The development of desktop clouds is inevitable, but requires

highly reliable devices to guarantee high-quality services.
S9700 use a highly reliable, multidimensional design.
Important components such as the MPU, Line Interface
Processing Units (LPUs), power modules, and fans work in
redundancy mode and are hot-swappable. The switches
support long-distance stacking to easily implement remote
disaster recovery. The S9700 send probe packets at intervals
of 3.3 milliseconds to detect link status, and in the event of a
failover, implement end-to-end network convergence within
50ms. This convergence does not affect user experience or
services.

Intelligent, Multi-Service Campus Networks:

Building a Cloud Platform
Network services are converging, and data, voice, and video
services now run on the same network. Quality of Service
(QoS) is designed to provide different levels of service quality
based on networking requirements. S9700
support QoS policies to identify and assign
forwarding priority to key services, and
to allocate network resources. Campus
networks require integrated wired and
wireless access. S9700 provide wireless
Access Controller Units (ACUs) to help
enterprises implement mobile ofce,
BYOD, and seamless WLAN expansion.

S9700 switches provide powerful capabilities that support

capacity expansion and service evolution. The switches work
in integrated security environments and offer support for
large-capacity wireless networks, elastic cloud computing
schemes, and IPv6-capable hardware. These switches can
deliver HD video services, as well as secure, reliable,
high-performance Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching
services.

High Bandwidth in the Cloud Era

Huawei S7700 and S6700
Cloud computing and media services are used in a wide range
of scenarios. Demand for HD and super HD video, in particular,
continues to grow rapidly. Older network architectures that
provide 100 M access and gigabit aggregation cannot meet
user demand for high bandwidth in the cloud computing era.
Huawei offers high-end, next-generation, intelligent S7700
and S6700 series switches to support gigabit access and 10
GE aggregation architecture for campus networks. S7700 and
S6700 switches provide high-density 10 GE ports, low-delay
data forwarding, and comprehensive security protection to
help enterprises meet the high bandwidth needs of cloud era
aggregation layers.

High-Density 10 GE Ports: Eliminating

Aggregation- Layer Bandwidth Bottlenecks
S7700s and S6700s provide the highest 10 GE port density
of any similar switch and are the optimal choice for campus
networks. These switches meet the bandwidth requirements
for real-time multimedia service transmission and the high port
density requirements of 10 GE servers in data centers. Chassisshaped S7700 switches support a maximum of 480 10 GE
ports. Case-shaped S6700 switches support a maximum of
48 10 GE ports to implement line-speed forwarding. S7700
and S6700 switches greatly reduce network construction and
maintenance costs for enterprise users.

Bursty Trafc
S7700s have large buffers on interface cards to ensure stable
trafc forwarding even in the event of bursty trafc. The S7700
also provides a high-performance solution that groups servers
and links to balance loads. The result is improved bandwidth
efciency and reduced IT investments. The 1.5 microsecond
forwarding delay of the S6700 meets the requirements for
High-Frequency Trading (HFT), High-Performance Computing
(HPC), and performance-sensitive, real-time applications.

Comprehensive Security Mechanisms:

Defending Against Internal and External
Security Threats
S7700 switches provide an industry-leading integrated security
solution to guard enterprise users against security threats.
S7700s have built-in rewalls that lter services to reduce
risks and improve security on enterprise intranets. S7700
switches also support virtual rewalls, multi-instance Network
Address Translation (NAT), and Application Specic Packet
Filter (ASPF). One virtual rewall allocates resources to a single
virtual system. Virtual systems are independent of each other.
If one virtual system is attacked, it uses whatever resources
are necessary to defend itself, but other virtual systems are
not affected and other applications on the networks continue
running.

There are large volumes of communications trafc on campus

network borders and many access modes. Compared to core
and aggregation layer devices, devices at network borders
face more security threats and are more likely to suffer from
performance bottlenecks. New types of user devices and new
Internet services are emerging all the time. More existing
services are migrating to IP networks. Campus networks must
provide multi-service processing capabilities and be highly
reliable. To meet the needs of this range of scenarios, Huawei
offers feature-rich, case-shaped S5700 series switches. S5700
series switches give enterprise users more network planning
choices and help them build more competitive campus
networks.

High GE Port Density + 10 GE Uplink Ports:

Providing Sufcient Bandwidth for Access
S5710-EI and S5710-HI switches are performance leaders. The
S5710-EI supports a maximum of eight 10 GE ports and 64 GE
ports. S5710-HI supports 96 GE ports, eight 10 GE ports, and
four 40 GE ports. Faced by various combined access modes,
the S5700 enables exible combinations of ports to help
enterprises reduce network construction costs.

S5700 switches satisfy a wide range of needs and have

become a favored choice of investors. The intelligent PoE
function provided by S5700s enables plug and play and
intelligent recognition of terminals.

Comprehensive Security Mechanisms:

Enhancing Network Security
Campus networks must forward services reliably, especially
voice and video services, in real time and without any faults.
S5700s provide comprehensive security mechanisms that allow
services to run stably with a zero packet loss ratio. S5700s
support software- and hardware-based link fault detection
and send detection packets at intervals of 3.3 milliseconds.
Hardware-based fault detection mechanisms can be associated
with multiple protocols and implement switchovers in
milliseconds. S5700 switches run Huaweis proprietary SEP
protocol for semi-ring, closed ring, and multi-ring networks.
S5700s are the rst switches in the industry to interwork with
devices from other suppliers, which helps customers maximize
ROI.

Multiple Services and High Performance:

Adapting to Different Scenarios
The S5700 series has several models, each with different
features to support different campus network scenarios:

S5700-SI provides GE access and 10 GE uplink ports. It is

used on simple Layer 3 networks or small-sized campus
aggregation networks.

S5700-EI provides sophisticated Layer 3 routing functions

and is used on small-sized campus core networks.

S5710-EI provides exible port combinations. It is used

in scenarios that require a dense deployment of Layer 3

Energy savings are critical to reducing overall network OPEX.

Huawei S5700-LI Layer 2 gigabit access switches enable
enterprises to build high-performance cloud-based campus
networks by saving energy. They also provide intelligent
O&M capabilities and scalability that make use of bandwidthconsuming terminals. Today, network communications devices
offer increasingly powerful functions that deliver services at
higher speeds than ever before. These devices also consume
more power than ever before. According to statistics from
International Data Corporation (IDC), energy consumption
costs account for 25 percent of total operating costs for
hardware.

Three-Dimensional Energy-Saving Design

S5700-LI switches employ a three-dimensional design that
supports port sleeping, whole equipment sleeping, and
structural energy savings. This design greatly reduces power
consumption without compromising system performance or
user experience. S5700-LIs meet the EEE standard and can
dynamically adjust power on ports based on trafc volume.
Per-port power consumption is 30 percent lower than the
industry average. When a port and a chip are not transmitting
or receiving trafc, they enter sleeping mode simultaneously
to reduce power consumption. In whole equipment sleeping
mode, power consumption for the entire device is less than 37
percent of power consumption during normal operations.
Some models use a fanless design the rst high-density
gigabit devices in the industry to do so. Huawei S5700-52P-LI
switches use an average of 150 kWh less per year than Cisco's
leading energy-saving switch, the C2960S-48TS-L. Energy
savings can bring signicant benets to enterprises that have
hundreds of access devices deployed on campus networks.

If a device powers off unexpectedly, its "dying gasp" function

sends a power-off alarm to the Network Management System
(NMS), enabling network administrators to quickly locate the
fault.

All-around and Flexible Expansion

S5700-LI series switches support intelligent stacking. A
maximum of nine devices form a stack that signicantly
increases switching capacity and forwarding speed. After
a stack is set up, the system assigns stack IDs to member
switches in order to manage the switches in a unied manner.
The matching Redundant Power System (RPS) provides power
supply backup for six devices. If a switchs internal power
supply unit fails, the RPS seamlessly switches power to another
unit. An S5700-LI switch congured with IPv4/IPv6 dual stack
supports smooth migration from IPv4 to IPv6.

Huawei S5700-LI series switches

The switch industry is moving toward gigabit-to-the-desktop,

but gigabit devices are much more expensive than 100 M
devices. The high cost of gigabit devices is an obstacle for
small enterprises and enterprise branches. Because 100 M
devices are relatively inexpensive and feature low power
consumption, they remain the rst choice for cost-conscious
enterprises building campus networks. Huawei S3700 and
S2700 series switches enable small enterprises to invest less
and still enjoy high-quality service. The S3700 and S2700 series
switches are highly cost-effective, reliable 100 Mbits/s network
products.

Energy Saving, Quiet Design

S3700 and S2700 switches use an energy-saving integrated
circuit design to ensure even heat dissipation. Idle S3700 and
S2700 ports enter sleeping mode to further reduce power
consumption. All S2700 and S3700-28TP series switches use
a fanless design that dramatically reduces power consumption
and noise. Fanless design also limits the possibility of
mechanical faults and protects the equipment against damage
caused by moisture or dust. Radiation emitted by S2700
switches is within the accepted range for electrical appliances
and has no harmful effects.

to the NMS, enabling network administrators to quickly locate
the fault.

Surge Protection: Keeping Network

Operations Secure
S2700 and S3700 switches use a patented Huawei surge
protection technique to protect against surges caused by
lightning strikes. All S2700 and S3700 ports have a surge
protection capability of 10/700 s, 6 kV. The surge protection
capability of S2700s and S3700s is eight times greater than
the industry-average 4 kV surge protection. Huawei surge
protection greatly reduces the possibility of lightning damage
on equipment even in situations where grounding cannot be
implemented. Surge protection can be increased to 15 kV by
using additional surge protection devices.

Simplied O&M: Streamlining Network

Management
S3700 and S2700 switches support automatic conguration,
plug and play, and automatic remote batch upgrade to greatly
simplify network management and minimize O&M costs.
S3700 and S2700 also support intelligent PoE power supply,
which optimizes the work environment and lowers costs by

Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) need switches

that provide the following features:

High bandwidth

High security

Simplied O&M

Cost-effectiveness

Energy saving, quiet design

Huawei provides next-generation, energy-saving S1700 series

switches for SMEs. S1700s are used in a wide range of locales,
such as Internet cafes, schools, hotels, and "intelligent"
buildings that integrate a variety of systems. S1700 switches
have three advantages: one-click operation, a dual security
guarantee, and an energy-saving design.

Energy-Saving Design
S1700 series switches are industry-leading energy savers.
These switches use a three- dimensional energy-saving
design consisting of "energy-saving ports + energy-saving
chips + structural energy saving." S1700s use 60 nm chips to
dynamically adjust power on ports based on trafc volume.
Idle S1700 ports can enter the sleeping state to further reduce
power consumption. Power consumption of an S1700 switch
amounts to that of only one compact uorescent lamp.
S1700s also offer a quiet, fanless design that allows natural
heat dissipation to cool down the device.

One-Click Operation

30

S1700 switches provide unique, easy-to-use one-click

operation of the following functions:

Restoration of factory settings

System upgrades

Displays of system running logs and fault information

Dual Security Guarantee

S1700 switches provide multiple methods for defending
against a wide range of attacks, enabling users to customize
trafc polices to suit actual network conditions. For example,
S1700s provide users with a dual security guarantee consisting
of "security authentication + defense against attacks."The
switches also provide several user access control modes and
a complete desktop control mode for "user authentication +
security check + access authorization" to safeguard enterprise
information.
