Task(s)

Week 1:

Introduction to VCE
Visual Communication
and Design.

Explain what a VCD is

(where do we find it? see
it? etc).

Class discussion based

on what has been
discussed.

- Study Guide
- Weebly
- Handout of what Unit

- Class Discussion

Demonstrate the study

guide to the students and
explain what is required
for the subject during the
year (how much SACs,
SATs, Exams weigh).
Week 2:

Understand the structure

of visual communication
designs through following
the design process.

Prior to teaching students

about VCD terminology,
this week focuses on the
design process
(structure) of folio work
for the subject.
This includes examples
of past students work
within each stage of the
process (design brief,
research, generation of
ideas, development of
concepts, refinement,
resolution of
presentation).

3 & 4 includes.
Timeline table of due
dates and important
schedules.

Examples of past
students work(s) could
be used to allow students
to have a greater
understanding of each
stage of the design
process. (what
should/needs to be
achieved within each
component).

- Past students folio

design process of
creating visual
communications.

- Handout(s) from the

study design
explaining the design
process.

- Study design
handout(s) to use as a
resource/reference.

Week 3:

Week 4:

Introduction to design
elements and principles
and how to apply them.

A strong focus on design

elements and principles
before the SAC takes
place in a few weeks.

Use accurate examples

to best explain each
design element and
principle.

Students will learn the

fundamental structure of
how visual
communications are
viewed using the design
elements and principles.

Demonstrate and explain

each one in depth.

Analysing Visual
Communication Designs

The forth week of

teaching this terms unit
of work will consist of

They will also be looking

these designs.

Week 5:

Writing a brief

This weeks focus is on

writing an accurate brief
that best describes the
client, target audience,
genre, etc.
This is an importnat
component of the Unit as
students need to reflect
what they are designing
through their brief to
ensure that it make
sense.

Week 6:

Unit 3 SAC

After learning the

fundamentals and main
components of Visual
Communication theories,
students will undergo
their first SAC for the
unit, which involves using
correct and accurate
terminology to analyse a
Visual Communication
and Design.

Use examples of past

students folios and works
to gain inspiration.
Use existing companies
to also help explain the
purpose of a brief and
how it is created.

Students are to
undertake a 75 minute
SAC under test
conditions.

- Past folio
- Looking at visual

communications and
company aims/briefs.

- Able to write an
accurate brief that
reflects the work they are
creating.

Week 7:

Students to start their

folio.

As the students have so

far learnt about the
design process in
creating visual
communications,
terminology (language),
and design elements and
principles this has now
created a basis for them
to work from in further
assessments.
This lesson will put all of
these components into
practice as they begin
their units of study.

Recap on what has

previously been taught to
allow students to reflect
on what they have learnt
thus far.
Outline what Unit 3/4
folio work will consist of
(explain what needs to
be completed/achieved).

Putting into context what

has been taught thus far
to begin folio work.

Learning Sequence
Week 8:

Understanding the
Methods, Materials,
Medias of Visual
Communication.

Before moving onto the

more in-depth details of
the folio (development of
concepts, refinement,
final presentation),
students will undergo
workshops relating to the
methods, materials and
medias they can use in
order to push their
designs further.

Examples of past
students work(s) could
be used to allow students
to have a greater
understanding of each
stage of the design
process and how to apply
different techniques to
their own work.

stronger sense of the
design process.
Week 9:

Focus on computer
generated programs
such as Adobe Illustrator
and Adobe Photoshop.

Building the students

skills in computer
generated programs for
future purposes and
stages of the folio ie:
development, refinement
and final presentation.

Create activities in
relation to the
programs/applications
being introduced.

Week 10:

Technical drawings

This weeks focus is on

understanding the
technical drawings within
the subject.

Introduction to technical
drawings:
- Isometric
Planometric

- Orthogonal
Past exams will be
- 1 point perspective
vaguely introduced to
help students prepare for - 2 point perspective
future assessments.
Week 11:

Continue folio work

Informal feedback on
students folio work,
assess what stage they
have completed (sticky
notes are a great option
to place and annotate
students work/progress
in particular areas).

Overall view of what has

been taught thus far.

Dedicate a week or
lesson to the content
learnt so far, to gather an
understanding of how
much the students have
learnt.

Use
worksheets/handouts to
gage how the students
have travelled so far
during the Unit of work.
