Connect:
Today we will be reviewing homophones, what they are, and learn a game
to help our ability to identify and determine their meanings. (10 seconds)
Teach:
Direct Instruction:
Discussthemeaningandspellingofeachhomophonewithstudents.Pointoutthat
eachhomophonesoundsthesamebuthasadifferentmeaningandspelling.(3
minutes)

Homophonesaretwowordsthatarespelleddifferentlybuthavethesamesound.
Ifyouhearthemoutloudwithoutseeingthemwrittendown,youdontknowifyouare
talkingaboutahare(rabbit),orahair(growingonyourhead).Oneexampleofthisare
thewordshareandhair.Contexthelpsyouknowwhichoneismeant,aswell.
Teacherwillwriteotherexamplesofhomophonesforstudent.
Aftergoingoverexamplesofhowhomophonesmeaningsaredeterminedbythe
contextofhowthewordsareused,thestudentswillbeintroducedtotheHomophone
Rummygame.

Active Engagement:

Process:
Once the poem is finished, teacher will ask checking for
understanding content questions.
Dividestudentsintosmallgroups(34students)andexplainthattheyaregoing
tobeactingoutseveralhomophonesfortheclass.

- Introduce Homophone Rummy (Assessment)
Procedure:
- Playersaredealt7cardsandbegingamebycheckingtheirhandsforalreadyexisting
pairs
- Theremainderofthedeckisplacedinacentrallocationwiththefirstcardturnedfaceup
besidesthedecktoformadiscardpile
- Thepersonontheleftofdealergoesfirst.Eachplayerdrawsfromwitherdeckorthe
discardpile.Newpairsarelaiddownanddefined.Thenplayermustdiscardonecardto
endturn.
- Anotherplayerwhodisagreeswithdefinitionscanchallengeaplayer.Thepersonwho
challengeslooksupwordindictionary.Whoeverisrightkeepsthepair.

Thegameisoverwhenonepersonhasnocardsleft.ThatpersonyellsRummy!Then
thepairsarecounteduptodeterminethewinner.

Differentiation:
For students who need support with the concept, teacher will give
additional instruction, provide support during guided practice
(Homophone Rummy). Students who move quickly through the activity
are encouraged to play more than one round of the game. Teacher can
switch out the deck for different homophones for students to identify and
pair during other word study time. Students are also asked to use each
word in the homophone pair to show understanding of the meaning of the
words through context. This will be how students will be able to determine
that the pair is correct.
Guided Practice (20 minutes):
-Guide students through proper gameplay for Homophone Rummy.
Closure (5 minutes):
Students share the results of each table group game results such as
