1. WHAT IS POKMON GO?

Pokmon Go has taken the world by storm and all you need to play it, is a
smartphone and a willingness to get outside. Millions have downloaded Pokemon Go,
a new augmented-reality game that has them wandering the streets looking for virtual
monsters. And as the game soared on the top of download charts, it has also propelled
game maker Nintendo on a wild two-day stock spike, adding $7.5-billion to its market
value.

2. HOW DO I GET STARTED?

First things first, youll need to install the Pokmon Go app, available in iOS
and Android in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. If youre not in those
areas, hang tight, as Niantic is rolling out to other regions as time goes on.
Once youve been logged in, youll get a brief introduction by the dreamy
Professor Willow, wholl give you an introduction to the game, and walk you through
catching your choice of the three starter pokmon either a Charmander, Squirtle, or
Bulbasaur, which should all be familiar to Pokmon regulars.
After that though, the game pretty much leaves you on your own, aside from a
small tips section that mostly explains basic map icons. But there are three basic parts
to play Pokmon Go: catching pokmon, visiting pokstops, and gym battles.

3. HOW DO I CATCH POKMON?

Catching pokmon works mostly like youd expect: you simply walk around
with the app open on your phone, which will buzz when pokmon are nearby. Tap on
the pokmon on the map, and youll switch to the catching interface. The color of the
ring surrounding the pokmon helps determine how easy it is to catch green is
easiest, yellow intermediate, and red the most difficult.
Pokmon are found at different CP (Combat Power) levels, which more or less
determines how powerful the pokmon will be. To raise a pokmons CP, youll need
two resources: stardust, a generic item you obtain with each pokmon that you catch,
and the pokmons specific candy, which can be obtained by catching duplicates of the
pokmon you want to level up. For example, to level up a Zubats CP, youll need
stardust and Zubat candies. Similarly, to evolve your pokmon, youll need to use
more of that pokmons candies, which will also dramatically raise the CP of that
pokmon. As your character level increases, youll encounter higher level pokmon in
the wild and be able to level up the CP level of your pokmon more.
Different pokmon are found in different places so while one location might
be infested with Zubats, going farther afield may result in different or rarer pokmon.

4. WHAT ARE POKSTOPS?

Pokstops are important landmarks, marked on the map at significant (usually)
nearby locations. Visiting pokstops is the primary way of getting items. When youre
close enough to a pokstops to activate it, the map icon will expand into a spinning
pokballs icon, allowing you to tap on it to obtain items, such as pokballs, potions,
revives, and eggs (which can be hatched by walking around). You can also activate
lure modules at pokstops, which are marked by a swarm of hearts on the map,
increasing the likelihood of pokmon appearing there. Some items, however, can only
be purchased with pokcoins, which can be earned by fighting in gym battles or
bought as in-app purchases.

5. HOW DO I LEVEL MY CHARACTER UP?

You can earn experience from nearly every activity in the game catching
pokmon, fighting at a gym, visiting pokstops which in turn levels up your
character. Youll also be gifted items when you reach a new level. Additionally, once
you reach level five, youll be given the chance to choose from one of the three colorcoded factions: red Team Valor, yellow Team Instinct, and blue Team Mystic, and
have the opportunity to battle other trainers in gyms.

6. WHAT ARE GYMS?

Gyms are in-game locations that are typically tied to major real-world areas
such as the Bryant Park Fountain or Times Square where you can battle other
trainers. If a gym is held by your faction, you can select a single pokmon and train
against other members of your team, raising the amount of prestige points associated
with the gym. The higher the prestige, the more pokmon that can be stationed at the
gym, which in turn grants higher daily bonuses of stardust and pokcoins that can be
earned. If theres an open spot at a gym, you can add one of your pokmon to help
hold down the fort. Gyms held by one of the two rival factions, however, need to be
battled for. If you and your fellow members defeat the pokmon stationed there, you
can lower the gyms prestige and eventually return it to a neutral level. It can then be
claimed by your faction and a pokmon can be left there to fight against new
challengers. Battling in gyms also gives your pokmon experience and raises their CP
and HP.

7. HOW DO I BATTLE?
Battling in Pokmon Go is like a simplified version of the classic Game Boy
game. Pokmon face off one-on-one, and can use one of two attacks tapping on the
enemy pokmon to do a low-damage light attack, and tap-and-holding to unleash a
special attack once your meter has filled. Additionally, you can dodge enemy attacks
by swiping left and right. Battles continue until one of the pokmon has fainted. And
of course, standard pokmon damage type rules are in effect: water pokmon are

effective against fire types, fire against grass, etc. Pokmon can be healed or revived
using potions and revives that you can obtain from visiting pokstops.

8. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT ITEMS, AND HOW DO I GET

THEM?
Pokball / Great Ball / Ultra Ball Pokballs are your bread and butter tool for
catching pokmon. Great balls unlock at level 12 and are better at capturing
pokmon, while ultra balls, which unlock at level 20 are even more useful for highlevel pokmon. All three can be obtained at pokstops once youve reached the right
level, and regular pokballs can be bought with pokcoins from the Store.
Potion / Super Potion / Hyper Potion Potions allow for pokmon to be healed in
between battles.
Revives Allow for revival of pokmon that have fainted in battle.
Lucky Egg An item that doubles the experience you gain in the next half-hour after
use. Can be obtained at pokstops or bought using pokcoins from the store.
Razz Berries A higher-level item obtained starting at level 8, Razz berries can be
used on higher level pokmon to help prevent them from running away. More can be
found at pokstops once theyve been unlocked.
Egg Incubator Egg incubators are used to hatch eggs, which can contain rare
pokmon. Youre given one incubator for free that has unlimited uses, while
additional, three-use incubators can be found in pokstops or bought with pokcoins.
Eggs hatch after being incubated for a certain walking distance that depends on the
specific egg (usually between two to five kilometers).
Lure Module A temporary use item that can be applied to a pokstop that
increases the chances of encountering wild pokmon at that pokstop for all nearby
users. Can be found at pokstops or bought using pokcoins form the store.
Incense A temporary use item that increases the likelihood of encoding wild
pokmon for the user of the item for the next half-hour after use. Can be found at
pokstops or bought at the store with pokcoins.

9. TIPS:
Buy an external battery! Pokmon Go can be a huge battery drain on your phone,
since the app needs to be running constantly.
There are no pokmon centers in Pokmon Go, so revives and potions remain the
only way to heal injured or fainted pokmon.
Wait to evolve pokmon until youre at least level 10 the boost you receive in CP
from evolution is tied to your character level, and the higher your level, the greater
will be the gain.
Hopping on a bicycle is a fun, fast way to hatch pokmon eggs quickly.
Make sure to stay hydrated when catching pokmon outside.
Consider turning off the augmented reality interface its fun to see pokmon in the
real world, but the camera consumes more battery life and constant movement can
make pokmon more difficult to catch.

Be smart and make sure to always be aware of your surrounding and people nearby.
Pokmon Go relies on Google Maps data try downloading the maps directly
from Google to cut down on battery use and data consumption.

10.

TRICKS

Each pawprint on the Pokmon tracker represents about a 75-meter (246 ft)
distance.
Your eggs wont gain hatching progress if you travel faster than 24 kmh (15
mph).
Speaking of eggs, these are (generally) the Pokmon that hatch from the
different egg types.

That curve on your Pokmons profile indicates its potential and should factor
heavily into your decision to evolve or not.

How to get Pikachu as your starter Pokmon? - If you continually run away
from your first battle with the starter Pokmon you choose, eventually Pikachu
should show up as a starter option.

Turning off AR (which can be done when you encounter a Pokmon) will
save battery life.

You can train with the Pokmon at your own gym for extra XP and Gym
Prestige.

Stock up on Lucky Eggs and use them right before youre about to hatch a lot
of eggs or evolve a lot of your Pokmon.

The cheapest and easiest Pokmon to evolve are Weedle, Pidgey, Caterpie,
and Rattata. They need only 12 Candys, so its good to stock up on them for
XP purposes. If you have a Lucky Egg, you can potentially evolve a bunch of
them at once for massive XP gains.

Go into a gym battle, defeat the first opponent, then run. If you still get XP
from the encounter, then you should be able to hop back in and do that
indefinitely for a decent amount of XP per hour.

Consider renaming your most-used Pokmon with their types and/or abilities
so you know which ones to pick in your gym battles.

The Pokmon in your area are different from the Pokmon in other
neighborhoods. You might need to go to a different town, state, or even
country, depending on how close the border is, to actually catch em all.

Factors like the weather and time of day will affect what types of Pokmon
you encounter. - Dark and ghost Pokmon reportedly come out more often at
night, and water-type Pokmon are more likely to show up in your area if its
raining.
Once you have a Pokmon guarding a gym, check the shield icon in the topright corner of the Shop for Defense Bonuses. As long as youre stationed at
that gym without being defeated, youll get coins every 21 hours that you can
spend on items.

PokStops refresh about once every five minutes! You'll notice them
changing color from purple to blue

Avoid evolving a three-tier-evolution Pokmon unless you can do both

evolutions right away. - Lets say you have a Ghastly, and you evolve it right
away into Haunter, but that leaves you with zero Ghastly candy. By the time
you earn enough Ghastly candy to evolve your Haunter into a Gengar, chances
are youll be a much higher level and will already be catching higher-CP
Ghastly and Haunter that will be much better candidates for evolution.

If the game freezes while youre capturing a Pokmon and you have to quit
out, just check your Journal when you log back in. - Your Journal keeps a log
of all your encounters, so itll tell you if that Pokmon was caught or ran away
while you were cursing and restarting the app.

Do not spend real money on Pokemon GO. You can get most of the items
on Pokstops

Power saving mode open Pokemon GO and turn your phone upsidedown, with the screen facing you.

To throw a curveball (which are worth more XP, but you risk burning through
Pokballs to do so), simply hold on the Pokball and make a rotating motion
until it sparkles. Once this has happened, let it fly - and most likely miss - but
eventually you'll get the hang of it.

Catches have 4 ratings, blank/good/nice/excellent, which give you

0/10/50/100 bonus XP on top of the XP you get for a catch. Also try to land the
ball in the middle of the target circle. You will get extra points.

Pokemon with ??? as "combat points" will not recognize you as a trainer,
giving it a high escape risk. Definitely use items if you have them.

Tougher and rarer Pokemon will often be harder to catch - a green ring means
an easy catch, yellow harder, and then orange and red. Difficult Pokemon may
often break out of a Pokeball, or even run away. You can find items like
berries to help with this.

It is better to power up your Pokemon after they're fully evolved as it gives

you more Combat Power, or CP.

Due to how every item and element of progress is synced with Niantic's
servers, when you visit a pokestop, you can simply hit the 'X' quit button and
any requisite items will automatically be added to your inventory, meaning
you don't have to wait for the animation to stop.

That rustling grass animation on your map shows areas where Pokmon are
likely to be spawn. It definitely does not mean there WILL be pokemon there,
but usually something will pop up if you hang out in that area long enough.

If you see a Pokemon with no footprints on the Nearby list, you can
summon it by tapping your screen, and it should pop up nearby within a few
seconds.

The teams are based off the three legendary birds found in the first game:
Instinct (Zapdos) focuses on hatching eggs. Mystic (Articuno) focuses on
evolving Pokemon. Valor (Moltres) focuses on battles.

You have 6 pokemon to beat the gym with. 6 mediocre pokemon can beat 1
strong pokemon, so you can easily peck away at a gym, even if your pokemon
are weaker than theirs.

Clicking the pencil next to a Pokemon's name allows it to be renamed and

apparently there's no language filter as far as we can tell. Use all the naughty,
potty-language words youd like.

If your Poke Ball misses the target and falls to the ground nearby - you can
pick them back up by tapping on them to recover the Poke Ball and avoid
wasting tons of Poke Balls on one pokemon! (Not working on curved balls)

If you lock your screen, the game stops, so if you decide to go for a run and log
some distance toward hatching an egg, you have to leave the app open and
your screen unlocked.

If you select any Pokemon via the Nearby screen, you will target it and have
a better chance of catching that species specifically.

If you still cant find the pokemon, check out the last two pages, for a little
hack (it's not really a hack, but it will help you a lot).

It would seem that there is in fact a way to force an evolution of your Eevee.
The Eevee Brothers from the original anime were named Rainer, Pyro, Sparky
and they owned a Vaporeon, Flareon and Jolteon respectively. If you nickname
your Eevee either Rainer, Pyro or Sparky, your Eevee will evolve into that
desired Eeveelution!
o Sparky = Jolteon
o Rainer = Vaporeon
o Pyro = Flareon

SUGGEST A GYM AND POKESTOP LOCATIONS

To suggest a Gym or Pokestop locations, players need to fill out a form on

Niantic's Pokemon GO support site. It's there that they'll be asked to give a reason for
wanting to add that particular location to the already long list of Pokestops and Gyms,
with one of the options being "No Pokestops or Gyms near me." This will be a great

help for people who want to play the game but are limited in what they can do because
they live in lower population areas.
On the other hand, if you have a Pokestop or Gym located on your personal
property, you can also use this form to request that it be removed. Ever since the
launch of Pokemon GO, we've heard stories from folks who have discovered that their
house is a Gym or Pokestop, with some being more tolerant than others of the
inevitable groups of Pokemon trainers showing up on their property. Just as well, if
you see a Pokestop or Gym that's in a dangerous location, you can use this form to
report it and possibly get it removed. Finally, players can use the form to report stops
or Gyms that no longer exist or any issues they're having with Gym battles.
It's great to see Niantic offer up this form to Pokemon GO players, but it would
probably be best to temper your expectations, as the company does ultimately have the
final say in whether or not Pokestops or Gyms are added to the game. Still, having a
resource available to request the removal of locations that shouldn't be flagged in the
game will be a welcome relief to homeowners who don't like the fact that Pokemon
GO players are visiting their houses in droves.
You can find submission form to make a request on this site:
https://support.pokemongo.nianticlabs.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=319928
