2. Literacy: The students will write a story using a plot, characters, and
a theme.
3. Social Studies: The students will be able to interacting with another
generation (kindergarteners).

Lesson Activities & Procedure(s) (please be very

specific):
Day 1
1. Read Dont Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.
2. Talk about what an author and an illustrator is.
3. Introduce the entire project.
4. Give instructions for the day. Today we will be
working on researching author/illustrators on
the IPads. Once you have found one that you
like enough to recreate, do some research
about the person and any information you can
find on their art.
5. Allow students to do research on their IPads.
Day 2
1. Today we will be taking the information you
learned about your artist and apply it to your
own book. I have checked out some books with
most of your authors that you can use as
references.
2. Have the students start to write a story that
kindergarteners will be able to understand.
3. Once the student feels confident in their first
draft, have the student work with a peer to
edit.
4. Try and finish writing the story.
Day 3

Anticipatory Set (Gaining Attention)*:

We will read Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo
Willems and talk about how he is my personal favorite
author/illustrator.

Formative Assessment strategy:

Take anecdotal notes while the students are working on their
projects.
Using a self-evaluation form at the end of the project about how
they thought how it went.
Group discussion about what is going well, what isnt going so
well and allow peers to give feedback.
Teacher-student conferences.

1. Today and tomorrow we will be working on

illustrating our books. Remember that you are
using the artist you have chosen for
inspiration, it does not need to look exactly like
theirs. Make this book yours!
2. Provide ample amounts of material so students
can use the materials that they seem suitable
for their artwork.
Day 4
1. Continue to work on books and finish
illustrating.
2. Final peer edit to make sure all grammar is
accounted for.
3. Teacher will make sure they all get finished.
Day 5
1. Meet up with a kindergarten class.
2. Have students read their books to several
kindergarten students.
3. Leave books in classroom for the
kindergarteners to use.
Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set):
The students will read their book to a
kindergartener and leave the books in
the kindergarten classroom for those
students to read whenever they may like.
Summative Assessment strategy*:
The summative assessment is evaluating the
final draft of the book. Asking questions such
as:
Were they able to use an author/illustrator as
inspiration for their own book?
Did their story make sense?
Rubric

What

student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?

How to create a book.
Writing books.
Illustrating writing.
The students will know how to write their own stories in a way that kindergartener will understand.

How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?
I will encourage my students to explore all the different authors/illustrators so they feel like they can make an educated
decision on the artist they are going to represent.
The students will have to use their imagination to come up with a story that has a plot, characters, and a theme. They
will also need to be imaginative when they are ready to illustrate their book.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
This lesson will allow students to create their own artwork in the way that they seem fit.
They will need to be able to improvise with materials if the materials that they wanted to use are not readily available.
They will have to ask themselves questions like: Are the materials that I want available to have? If not, what else can I
use that will still help me express what I am trying to say through my artwork?
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?
Each day, before we begin this project again, I will have my students close their eyes and picture what they want to
accomplish that day. Once they have imagined that, I will have them blow their answer in their hand and on the count
of three, they will all release what they said.
I will also be constantly walking around the room asking questions that are thought provoking. These questions will
allow the students to reflect on what they have already done while also thinking ahead to their final product.
How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abled students?
This lesson could be adjusted for any ability.
The teacher could suggest some well-known books that students may find interesting and also provide some physical
books and resources to help out.
For a child that may not be up to the 2nd or 3rd grade literacy benchmark, the teacher can have the child tell her the
story as the teacher records it for them. This way the student still has full ownership over the final product.

What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work?
Since this will be a full week project, the students will have ample time to work on their stories, have a peer edit their
writing, and then change what needs to be changed
This also gives enough time for the student to fully envelop into the mind of their inspiring artist, work hard at
interpreting the work and making their book their own.
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson?
One opportunity to share their thoughts on this project is with the kindergartener they are reading to. Having the
student explain to the kindergartener why they chose that particular artist and how they created their own book will
allow them to truly process why they did each step of the assignment.
It would also be beneficial for everyone in the class to have a discussion on what they thought went well, what they
thought they could have done differently, and what they would change if they were the ones assigning this project.
These grades are old enough to start thinking about questions like these.
