There is nothing in the world like a horoscope to help a man in the acquisition of wealth, to save him like

a boat in a sea of troubles and to save him as a guide in his journey. --Vaidyanatha Dikashita in Jatakaparijata

Horoscope

1. The starting point in astrological prognostications is the horoscope or astrological chart which shows

the positions of the planets and the Lagna or the Ascendant and other cusps in rasis or signs. To avoid faulty judgments and pronouncements it is necessary to correctly and properly cast the horoscope with the accuracy. These days, computer horoscopes are very common and they are prone to errors. This article is supposed to be helpful in the use of the astrological SWs and to compare the results of

manual calculation with the accuracy of computer SW.

2. To cast a horoscope, three essential birth data are required - time of birth, date of birth and place

of birth. The standard ephemeris and the Tables of Houses of Placidus System are also essential. To find the longitude and latitude of the birth place and the correct TZ, the www.astro.com website and

the SWs using ACS Atlas like KPAstro 3.0 are helpful.

Standard Time and GMT

3. Generally the TOB is given in the Standard Time (ST), ie., time by the clock, used in each country. In

India, the ST was chosen with Time Zone (TZ) 5 ½ hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Time (UT) at the meridian of 82’:30’’ East of GMT.

4. In using the Western ephemeris like Raphael in old days and Swiss in these days, we need GMT of

birth as the positions of planets are provided at 12 noon GMT in Raphael and at 00:00 UT midnight in Swiss. To get GMT or UT we add the Time Zone to the Standard Time of birth, if the birth was West of Greenwich, or subtract the Time Zone from the Standard Time of birth, if the birth was East of Greenwich. If the time of birth is Summer Time or Daylight Saving Time (DST), generally 1 hour should be deducted from the Standard Time of birth. The DST is generally the adjusting of clocks or ST forward one hour near the start of spring and backward in autumn or fall. The details vary by country and change occasionally.

5. For the Example Chart-1, May 15, 1963, 12:05 PM IST, (-5:30), Ahmedabad, 72E37, 23N02, the

Indian Standard Time (IST) of birth was 12:05 PM and Time Zone is – 5:30, East of Greenwich. So the GMT of birth was 12:05 PM minus 5:30, which was equal to 6:35 AM GMT.

Local Mean Time

6. One rotation of the earth in 24 hours is equivalent to 360’ of longitude. Thus each degree of longitude corresponds to 4 minutes of time. The Local Mean Time (LMT) is computed from the exact longitude of birth and not the time zone. The GMT is used to calculate the position of the planets and the LMT is used to calculate the ascendant and the cusps of the houses. The LMT can be arrived at by

multiplying the longitude of the birth place by 4 min. for each deg. by taking Greenwich as the place of reference. In the example chart-1, for 72E38, the difference of time from GMT is (72+38/60) x 4 min

= 4h:50m:28s, which is to be added to 6:35 AM GMT of birth to get LMT 11:25:28. If the longitude of

birth is West of Greenwich, such calculated time difference is to be subtracted from the

birth is West of Greenwich, such calculated time difference is to be subtracted from the GMT of birth.

7.

GMT is the LMT for zero degree of longitude at Greenwich. The IST is the LMT for 82E30, ie., 82.5

x

4 = 5h:30m time zone. So another method of calculating the LMT is to add 4 min. for each degree of

difference of longitude between the place of birth and the reference point of time zone to the ST of birth, if the place of birth is West of the reference point of time. In the example chart-1, the difference between the place of birth 72:37 and the reference point of IST 82:30 is 9:53. The difference in time is (9+53/60) x 4 min. = 39m:32s, which is to be subtracted from 12:05 PM IST to get LMT 11:25:28. Such calculated difference in time is to be added to the ST of birth, if the place of birth is West of the reference point of time.

Ayanamsa

8. The zodiac that corresponds to the actual constellations or the fixed stars is called the sidereal or

nirayana or Hindu zodiac. Around two thousand years ago, the two zodiacs coincided. Since then, along with the precision or ayanamsa, the two zodiacs have been slowly moving apart. The tropical or sayana or Western zodiac shows the astrological positions of some two thousand years ago. Thus the Hindus use the real zodiac and the Westerners a symbolic one. The sayana positions are converted to nirayana position by subtracting the ayanamsa value from the sayana positions. In this regards, the great scientist Albert Einstein has said, “We owe a lot to Indians who taught us how to count without which no worthwhile discovery could have been made”. In casting a KP horoscope the KP ayanamsa is to be used. It has been found in Mr. Kanak’s research that the New KP Ayanamsa works better than Lahiri Ayanamsa in the KP dasa analysis, especially in the Sookshma dasa level.

9. The three differences in around 30 ayanamsas in use are the year of coincidence of two sayana or

year of zero ayanamsa and nirayana zodiacs, the annual precession rate and its adjustment rate. The New KP Ayanamsa (2003) formula is as given under and the year of zero ayanamsa is 285 AD. (The NKPA values and the Ayanamsa adjustment for any Day of the Year are given in the Table 11 and 12.)

NKPA = B + [T* P + (T*T * A)]/ 3600

where,

B

= Base = 22+1350/3600 = 22-22-30 @ 15 Apr 1900

T

= Y-1900, Y= Calendar year for which ayanamsa is required

P

= 50.2388475 (Newcomb’s annual precession rate)

A

= 0.000111 sec per year (Adjustment rate of the annual precession rate)

Sidereal Time

10. Referring the Swiss 6000 years Ephemeris (www. astro.com) and the Raphael Ephemeris, the

Sidereal Time (SidT) for the example chart- 1 is calculated as show in the Table 1 and 2. (The KPAstro 3.0 gives the Sid. Time 02-54-33.)

Comparison of the Results

13. The manually calculated results for the example chart-1 are compared with the computer SW results in the Table 9 and 10, and it has been observed that:

1) The manual calculation cannot give the same accurate result as provided by the SW due to rounding in the given values of the ephemeris and table of houses, especially the rounded values to degrees in Raphael Tables of Houses. 2) The discrepancies of the example charts in the KP Readers from the SW results seem due to rounding and some differences in the values of the ephemeris and table of houses used and also taking approximate values in the manual calculation other than the difference in the old and new KP ayanamsas.

Division of Subs 1. The Hindu zodiac, Vimshottari dasa system and the Western Placidus house

Division of Subs

1. The Hindu zodiac, Vimshottari dasa system and the Western Placidus house system are three pillars

of the KP. The Hindu zodiac of 360 deg is divided into 12 equal rasis or signs of 30 deg each and also

into 27 equal nakshatra or star or constellation of 13d20m each. The constellation is further divided

into 9 unequal subs in the proportion in which the planets are allotted to the total 120 years in the

Vimshottari dasa system. invented.

On the basis of such divided 249 subs, the KP Horary of number 1-249 is

Fixed Ascendant of a Horary Chart

2. In casting a Horary chart, the commencing position of the Sub of the Horary number in the attached

Table --- of Subs for Horary Numbers (1 to 249) is taken as the Nirayana Ascendant position which remains the same irrespective of the date or time or place of casting the chart.

Place and Time of Casting a Horary

3. Based on the 1st cusp or Ascendant position of a Horary number, the cuspal positions of other houses are to be calculated for the latitude of the place of judgment by the astrologer irrespective of the place from which the query has been raised by phone, e-mail etc, using the Placidus Tables of Houses. The planetary positions should be worked out for the date and time when the astrologer commences analyzing the chart.

Links to Find World Atlas and Time Zone

4. The following Atrodienst (www.astro.com) is the mostly referred link which shows the atlas and time

zone data of the 254,106 towns based to a large extent on a licensed copy of the International and American Atlas by Astro Communications Services (ACS), San Diego, with additions and modifications by Astrodienst AG. (Astrodienst means 'Astro Service'; 'dienst' is the German).

Calculation of the Example Chart 2 (Horary)

Calculation of the Cuspal Positions

7. The direct calculation method by a calculator is used in this article. The traditional methods by means of Logarithms and interpolation table values in the Tables of Houses are also applicable.

Horary number: 105 (given by the querist)

Place of Casting (POC) or Judgment – Ahmadabad (LG Hospital), 23N00, 72E36

Time of Casting (TOC): January 5, 2008 at 10:04:48 AM IST

Query: When will be marriage?

1) To find out the Nirayana Ascendant rising 149:13:20 for the Horary number 105 from the attached Table 19 of Subs for Horary Numbers (1-249).

2) To convert the Nirayana Ascendant position to the Sayana one to use the Placidus Tables of Houses in Sayana values, ie. adding the New KP Ayanamsa 23:52:43 for the date of casting (DOC) to the Nirayana Ascendant rising 149:13:20 to obtain the Sayana Ascendant rising 173:06:03.

3) To find the Sidereal Time corresponding to the above Sayana Ascendant rising 173:06:03 in the Placidus Tables of Houses and then to calculate the other cuspal positions according to the latitude of place of casting the Horary chart.

4) In the KP Universal Tables of Houses (UTOH) or Michelsen Placidus Tables of Houses, for the latitude 23° North the Ascendant or 1st cusp 173:06:03 (d:m:s) falls between the lower value 172d38m corresponding to the earlier local Sidereal Time (LST) 5m28s and the higher value 173d33m corresponding to the later LST 5m32s as shown in the Column 3, Row 2 and 3 of the following Table 1.

5) LST increment = 5m32s – 5m28s = 4 min Asc. value change for 4 min = 173:34m – 172:38m = 56 min Asc. value change from the lower value = 173d6m3s – 172d38m = 28m3s

For 56 min change in Asc. value, there is 4 min increment in the LSidT.

For 28m3s change in Asc. value, how much increment is in the LSidT? = [(28+3/60)/56]

For 28m3s change in Asc. value, how much increment is in the LSidT? = [(28+3/60)/56] x 4 = (28.05/56) x 4 = 2.0036 min = 2m0.2s

6) The constant proportionate increment ratio (PIR) of 2m0.2s to 4m is to be multiplied by the changes in other cuspal positions within 4 min as shown in Row 3 to get proportionate changes in Row 4. By adding the figures in Row 2 and 4, the Sayana positions of cuspal positions are obtained in Row 5. To obtain the Nirayana positions as shown in Row 6, the NKPA 23:52:43 is to be subtracted from the figures in Row 5.
