Anticipatory Set
The hook to grab students attention.
These are actions and statements by the
teacher to relate the experiences of the
students to the objectives of the lesson,
To put students into a receptive frame of
mind.
To focus student attention on the
lesson.
To create an organizing framework
for the ideas, principles, or
information that is to follow
(advanced organizers)
An anticipatory set is used any time a
different activity or new concept is to be
introduced.
1. The days before the lesson I told the students there will be a
guest speaker and he has dealt with the different types
governments we were discussing personally. This gave them
wonder and excitement because the kids couldnt wait to find out
how and whom.
2. Day of the lesson hopefully the kids are still excited. The first
couple minutes will be me explaining who the speaker is,
what he does, and why he is talking to us today.
I want them to understand the interconnectedness of societies and the
impact the different governments have on one another. Being a
member in the military and having been deployed, Vokt has actual
experience with different forms of government.

planners and then proceed to watch CNN student news or silent read. I
want them transitioning into the Social Studies mindset
4 minutes This time is to explain the lesson plan for that day
1. Ask students quickly what they found out during transition
time (2 minutes)
2. Explain that we are going to review the governments we
learned about the previous day before the guest speaker
and have students get out a piece of paper to turn in at
the end of class. One side they must draw a Venn Diagram
like mine on the board
15 minutes Review Time!
1. Giving them 10 minutes, Students must compare and
contrast Monarchy, Dictatorship, and Democracy. This is my
time to check for understanding and answer any questions
they might have. Students can work with their table partners
(group practice)
2. Last 5 minutes is for Whole-Class practice where I ask them to
share some points they wrote down, sharing at least one
thing from each category.
40 minutes Guest Speaker activity
1. Introduce the Guest speaker this is finally my hook
statement. 2 minutes
2. Set guidelines for students and go over class expectations: Be
respectful to both the speaker and fellow classmates.
Participate and pay attention, He doesnt have to be doing this.
Remind them to thank him after we are done. This should take
no longer than 3 minutes
3. Skype Sargent Vokt for the remaining 35 minutes during this
time I will be monitoring and asking questions to keep the
students engaged. Students do not have to write down notes if
I see them actively participating. I will also show pictures of
what Sargent Vokt does
Once students and myself say goodbye to Sargent Vokt and thank him
for his time there will be around 7 minutes left in class. During this time
I will give them time to express their feelings, reflect anything that they
thought was interesting, or ask any questions that they may still be
