Annotated Bibliography:
Albert, Darrin. "Gender Feminism's Big Brother." National Coalation for Men 11 June 2008: n.
pag. Ifemenist. Web. 11 Nov. 2016.
This online magazine brings to attention the so-called feminist noise that is introduced
as an idea where women over emphasize on their feminist beliefs but men are just blamed for
their historical wrong doings. It tries to expose how as people we have become habitually
introduced to letting the over-bearing assumption that females are the victims and males are the
oppressors. It suggests that there are three areas in which gender masculinists have been
subdued. Darrin himself holds a fenced opinion where he agrees with equality for both sexes, but
debates the outlook of society. This magazine provides an evolved idea that seems to be
particularly current in todays world. I believe this source will provide just enough information to
widen the scope of our project and give a contemporary view. Darrin has also written many
articles in magazine and is privileged in talking about many political and world issues.

Caplan, Paula J. Gender Differences in Human Cognition. New York: Oxford UP, 1997. Print.
This book asks the questions of sex-related cognitive differences exist and why people try
to seek them out. It also addresses the validity of the research done for gender differentiation and
this begs the question if the rest of the information from past studies should be counted as valid.
Because of the way that this source leads the argument, I believe we will use minimal
information from this book. All the editors that have contributed are multi-published authors and
have done extensive research in the area of psychology.

Chetwynd, Jane, and Oonagh Hartnett. The Sex Role System: Psychological and Sociological
Perspectives. London: Routledge & K. Paul, 1978. Print.
This book discusses the development of how each society develops a stereotype for
females and
males and how the expectations of their community gives them boundaries that they are confined
to meet. It also introduces the sex-role system in America and how there seems to be double
standards for women both in the work field and in the home. Observations of occupational
female workers give data on a research study that was conducted. These psychological and
sociological perspectives are given by both Chetwynd and Harnett. They are also implicated in
a feminist movements and want to provoke a different attitude when discussing gender roles.

"Gender Roles and Gender Differences." Gender Roles and Gender Differences. McGraw-Hill
Global Education Holdings, LLC, n.d. Web. 15 Nov. 2016.
This web article states the biological influences on gender behaviors. It also provides
insight to the development of children and how they link to a specific gender due to factors such
as the values that are surrounding an individual while reaching maturity. Gender differences in
development and stereotyping are discussed in detail in various countries and cultures this will
help build support in the variation of gender roles for our argument in our project. A strength to
this source is that it advances the topic into something more than just stating differences between
genders but gives a multi-schematic visualization behind this complicated process. McGraw-Hill
is a world recognized American Science publishing company for scholarly texts and provides
reliable information.

Gilliespie, Dale. "Communication Styles: Understanding Gender Differences." Workhealthlife

Blog. Shepell, FGI, 25 Mar. 2013. Web. 11 Nov. 2016.
If we want to understand gender differences, we have to understand the leading way that
people relay information from one person to the next. In this source, it considers a balanced
approach to constructive communication. This lets us take a deeper look into the ways that
gender roles are acclimated to use communication styles. Due to how speech and behavior are
not the only modes of communication, it becomes essential to evaluate all other means of
communication between both man and woman. This source will give understanding to how
gender roles can be assumed within the means of communication. Gilliespie has given vital
detailed information to our topic but has also published numerous other blog post that give
reliable and credited information.

Hammack, Phillip L., and Bertram J. Cohler. The Story of Sexual Identity: Narrative
Perspectives on the Gay and Lesbian Life Course. Oxford: Oxford UP, 2009. Print.
This source is a book that gives a firsthand account of an individual that has lived in the
gay community and gives an alternate perspective of how attitudes towards these people can
have an impact on their lives. It can be especially helpful on the semester-long multimodal
project because it has a westernized view on the concept of gender identity and provides contrast
to other any other point of views. It also provides insight to how the history of relationships have
been impacted by history and culture. A weak point of this is it all conceives in a narrative
perspective and may leave out analytical information. Booth Hammack and Cohler are PhD
professors in psychology and have taught at renowned universities, they have also received many
awards for their published articles.

Kang, Mee-Eun. "The Portrayal of Womens Images in Magazine Advertisements: Goffmanans

Gender Analysis Revisited." Sex Roles 37.11-12 (1997): 979-96. Web.
This journal entry evaluates the specific behaviors of the portrayal of womens images in
magazines. determine what gender behavior patterns have been most prevalent in magazine
advertisements. In this research, comparisons were made regarding gender displays between the
years of 1979 and 1991 with random samples of print advertisements. The basic and essential
starting question of this research project is: What messages about women have been given to
society through magazine advertisements? This approach gives quantitative data and helps to
bloom the new added idea of how media can have an impact on gender behavior. As we no
longer stayed glued to our original idea of just gender differences in different countries, this
scholarly journal gives additional information on the effect of media and sex-roles.

MacDonald, Kevin. "Psychology 361Gender Roles and Gender Differences." Psychology 361 -Gender Roles and Gender Differences. Csulb.edu, n.d. Web. 11 Nov. 2016.
This article assesses how stereotypes can be identified cross-culturally and how the
development of gender undergoes overlaps. It introduces social and cognitive differences during
growth and organizes patterns that are seen during adolescence to adult-hood. This source will be
helpful in the semester long project as it gave comprehensive and suitable material for our thesis.
Also, the information presented was from an educational website so it was credible.
Schenkein, Joyce. "We Still Haven't Figured Out Cultural Gender Differences, but We're Getting
Closer." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 14 July 2016. Web. 11 Nov. 2016.
In this source, it elaborates upon the question of if behavioral differences between boys
and girls are biological or only cultural? It discusses many examples of the once believed in
complex that occurs between a boy and his father and a girl and her mother during childhood. It
states that while a child grows that when it begins to perform the same actions as their similar
parent but was disproven. It also provides information from a study conducted to observe IQs in
men and women and displays correlation between females and verbal tests while male usually
outperform on spatial and performance tests. This doesnt prove that men and women are on
totally different parts of the spectrum but instead the evidence shows statistics averages in a
larger population. The majority of the distributions that describe these traits overlap, which
means that in many areas, males and females are alike. This source gives many alternatives and
explains the complexity of both men and women and that its not only up to hormones and body
parts but its also is developed by the way that a person choses to become.

Smith, Steven G. Gender Thinking. Philadelphia: Temple UP, 1992. Print.

Author Steven G. Smith uses this book to analyze a biologically important topic of the
relevance of procreation in humans. He takes a very conservative approach in discussing this

subject matter and doesnt hesitate to converse about how we should realize sex imaginatively,
intellectually spiritually, and practically. This distinct view provides contrast to many of the other
sources and gives variated opinion that could serve towards a refined topic that doesnt choose
bias but instead, intends to educate the audience and let them choose their own views. This
differentiation in opinions will help give additional evidence for the use of our project.
