In the program Save The Children they have come up with a way to improve the literacy
in the US by having people donate money to buy more books and to sponsor kids in their
education. Due to poverty more than half of low-income families cant afford books to keep in
their homes in this program they have made a solution by supporting a student and to make
books more accessible to students, which will allow a success to a student's education and in life.
This program informs you on how to become a sponsor/ or how to donate to help, It tells you
about how easily a student can fall behind by the fourth grade and it's harder to catch up. This
information is very beneficial to make people aware of the problems people may not see
everyday and to make steps toward a solution to how it can be improved. This brings a solution
to my capstone by allowing more access for students to read. It gives me the grade level that says
make it or break it which is fourth grade which will allow me to further research how to improve
reading before that grade level.

This article gives strategies to reluctant readers, and allows them to interact with reading
material. In the article it teaches you how to identify reluctant readers and finding the reason why
they don't have an interest in reading. If a student is struggling understanding material you can
help by reading allowed and asking questions as you go along. Mainly each student may have
different specialized skills in reading, as a teacher or parent reading to meet those requirements
will help the reluctant student to be more engaged in reading. Some students may not enjoy
reading and there can be reasons but some just don't like it all some specialized reading services
help by giving each student for attention. This information teaches me how to identify reluctant
readers in a classroom, and to give them some more attention to the kids that need it. It helps
with my capstone project to give me new ideas to use my community service hours.
"Facts about Children's Literacy." NEA. National Education Association, 2002. Web. 01 Dec.
2016
http://www.nea.org/grants/facts-about-childrens-literacy.html
This site has statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) about
children's literacy. By reading more frequently to students as young children they tend to have
higher reading skills because they are continuously are listening to letters and sounds at a young
age. Children that are read too are able to count higher at a younger age and can write their
names. Compared to children who aren't read to when they were younger aren't as likely to accel
as well as the other children. All of the statistics relate to how a student that reads more often
compared to a reluctant reader. This is beneficial for my capstone because it's a reliable resource
for all of the facts i'll need to prove the decline in reading. In fourth grade only 7% are in
advanced reading the rest are proficient or below. This tells me I need to focus on fourth grader
in my project and see if their Accelerated Reader (AR) scores are a majority lower or proficient.

Heitin, Liana. "Drop in U.S. Math, Reading Scores Prompts Blame Game." Education Week.
N.p., 10 May 2016. Web. 01 Dec. 2016.
http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2015/11/04/drop-in-us-math-reading-scoresprompts.ht ml
In this article, Heitin talks about the drop in US math scores and reading scores from the
common core testing. Although this was not an expectation for the scores to decrease from 2013
to 2015 math scores for fourth graders decreased 1% and eighth it dropped 2%. In 2013 fourth
graders were proficient in math and reading until the test score of 2015. The majority of this
article suggest the decline is due to other reasons besides common core. It provides information
and test score for the decline in reading. This article completely proves my topic that there is a
decline in reading in elementary schools. It can also lead to investigating if common core really
is approving in students education or just making things harder. I think I can use some of the
statistics that were provided to enhance what I already knew about the fourth grade reading level.
These facts can maybe help me correlate if reading is encouraged more than math scores might
rise or if they are related in anyway.
Strauss, Valerie, and Lois Bridges. "How to Get Kids to Read Independently." The Washington
Post. WP Company, n.d. Web. 01 Dec. 2016
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2015/03/09/how-to-get-kids-toread-independently/?utm_term=.fa75a9b514f2
This article gives two different authors Strauss states facts about what kids want in books
or the percent of kids that enjoy reading independently. While the other author Bridges gives her
advice about how to improve kids reading more independently. For example like giving kids
support and guidelines or more access to books. Strauss states that 52% of the students that read

in class is their favorite part of the day and would love to have more reading time. Bridges
recommends to have about an hour of reading at school and at least a half hour at home to further
their education.overall kids should be able to seize the opportunity of learning and we should do
anything we can to help that process to allow them to grow into individual readers. I think this
article really opened my eyes to kids reading more in school. I think it would be a good idea for
kids to pick out their own books to meet their interest, but that also meets the level that fits the
student. I want to put in my capstone reading to kids and going to the library with them to
encourage them to read.
