PRACTICUM GUIDED OBSERVATION SUMMARY

Identifying information
1. Type of classroom (1 pt)
a. Fifth grade classroom, about the size of our whole classroom at nwtc, maybe a
little smaller
2. Teacher-student ratio for lessons observed (1pt)
a. To one teacher there is about 20 students (there have been students sick)
3. Grade and/or age level of children observed (1pt)
a. The grade observed was fifth
4. Classroom physical layout (1pt)
a. The class was on the left of the hallway facing south, walking in the door was
on the far left side of the room, four tables that could seat up to five were in a
row from left to right in the classroom in about the middle of the classroom,
the tables have two cubby time drawers in front of them for students to keep
their supplies in, teachers desk is on the far right on the side opposite of the
door with a dry erase board across the whole front. The back of the room has a
U shaped table for the teacher to work with small groups. There is a book
shelf separating the back area with the table on the left and a reading area on
the left. The reading area has a fireplace and bean bags to read on with books
surrounding the area. Finally, there are cupboards right on the left when you
walk into the room.
Activities Observed (Subject/activity)
1. Materials used (teacher-made, published) (1pt)
The teacher has a board behind his desk and above the fireplace area for work the
students have done. The work is stories made by the students, and the other board has
reports about presidents that the students have done. The clock in the room is located on
the right wall of the room and has numbers on the outside to show quarter after and so on.
2. Purpose (what is being taught)
I am in the classroom during their reading/literature time
3. Procedure (brief-general description) (1pt)
During this time, the students have the choice to work on their vocabulary, read
books, or work on their current reports which can be whatever that was okayed by the
teacher on an earlier day. The teacher took students back to get new vocabulary for the
next couple of weeks.
4. Input/Output channel(s) used (1pt)
(What channel is being used: auditory, visual, kinesthetic/tactile, multi-sensory)

Auditory is being used when with the teacher, tactile when reading and writing
information for reports
5. Students reactions (1pt)
The day I was there, the students were completely on task the whole time. They
seemed to know exactly what was expected of them and stayed on task. The teacher
even said this day was a really good day for them. There was minimum talking and a
lot of working.
Personal Reaction (4pt)
Your reaction- how did the lesson go?
I was completely amazed by the class. Not even kidding, there was no talking
unless it was a question that day. They all worked on something whether it was vocab,
their reports, or reading. As soon as the groups got their new vocab, they went straight to
their seats and started writing them out in their planners and writing them out on a
worksheet. I never expected to see a class that on task in my first couple of days.
Behavior Management Techniques (1pt)
How did the teacher control, reward and/or motivate the class?
I am not sure what he used in the past, but whatever he does is working. He did not have to tell
anyone to get back to work and had no complaints. He said they are usually not that quite, and he
was amazed himself. It must have just been one of those weird good days.
Miscellaneous Observations (1pt)
Interesting materials, strategies, ideas, programs used
One student was writing out his vocab in a long process. Each word he would add a letter
and go onto the next line. I found that really different and interesting, I have never seen
that before, but it must work for him
Ex. H
HA
HAP
HAPP
HAPPY
