Fines For Food Day

At The Nelson Library
In a bid to turn tardiness into tastiness, the Nelson Public Library had declared that all fines for overdue items
collected on Monday, December 12 will be donated to the
Nelson Food Cupboard.
Late book returners are invited to wait until that date to
pay up and benefit the Food Cupboard; penalties for lost
or damaged items are not included.
People from all walks of life use the Library, says chief
librarian June Stockdale. Were an important part of the
community and so is the Nelson Food Cupboard. By
working together we can fill both bellies and spirits. The
Nelson Food Cupboard Society is a nonprofit organization concerned with access to healthy food for those in
need as well as providing an educational resource on
nutritional health and community awareness of poverty
issues.
The Library will also accept additional cash donations
for the Nelson Food Cupboard on December 12.

Like the Dickens Returns...
Charles Dickens
Join us on Sunday, December 18 for the annual reading
of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Like the Dickens,
a timeless classic, will bring Nelsonites together again at
the Nelson United Church to raise money for the Nelson
Food Cupboard.
The doors open at 6:30 pm for the 7 pm event, which features readings by Aryn Sherriff, Gabriel MacDonald, Geoff
Burns, Jeff Forst and Laurie Jarvis. Mayor Deb Kozak, the
evenings host, will provide lively commentary and the
Nelson Heritage Harmony Barbershop Chorus will offer

sounds of Christmas to warm hearts and lighten spirits.
In the Dickens classic, Ebeneezer Scrooge learns the
value of giving to those less fortunate after he is visited
by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future and
sees the difference he can make in the world. The Nelson
Food Cupboard makes a difference by offering barrierfree help to people in need of all ages and from all walks
of life by providing healthy food for an average of 1400
residents each month.
After the reading, guests are invited to gather in the
church reception hall for some refreshments provided
by The United Church Womens group. Meet the readers
as well as the Barbershop Heritage Harmony Barbershop
Chorus who may even encourage us to sing along in a few
festive songs.
Tickets will be by donation at the door. Donations
above $20 are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. The
Food Cupboard will also be accepting donations of nonperishable food items at that time. All proceeds from Like
the Dickens benefit the Nelson Food Cupboard.

Wraps Up!
The Doug Bothamley Memorial Cashspiel,

wrapped up last Sunday,
November 27 at the Nelson Curling Center. It is
the second year that this
has been a Memorial
Spiel and this year the
growth was evident. The
Cashspiel 2016 Winning Team
format helps to attract
mens, ladies, mixed, competitive and house teams. After a
round robin, the draw format re-seeds teams for the playoffs, insuring that everyone has a chance to win some cash.
A fantastic group of 43 sponsors helped make the Cashspiel the premier curling event in the Kootenays. With a
purse of over $12,000, the event attracted 16 teams this
year and the addition of Kent Rinnes foursome from Spokane, made it an international spiel!
The big winner of the A event was Nelsons own Fred
Thomson team who defeated the Nando Salviulo team
in a well played final match. In the B event, the Myron
Nichol team from Castlegar defeated Nelsons Jamie
Tedesco team. The C event was an all Cranbrook final
with Todd Pellerins team defeating the Chris Medford team, while the D event was won by another
Nelson team, Ross Nobles foursome defeating the
Heather Nichol foursome from Castlegar/Rossland.

Christmas Tales Are Back In Nelson!
I am a storyteller. In my role as the pastor for the First

Baptist Church here in Nelson, I tell stories every week.
When I heard about Christmas Tales, I was so excited as
the professional theatrical and musical production, in my
opinion, is a perfect blend of music and theatre.
We had Russ Rosen and Justyn Rees last year at FBC and
the energy and fun we had that night was awesome! Kids
were dancing and everyone was singing along. We were
mesmerized with the powerful acting Justyn brought to
the advent story. So, if you have a desire to enrich your
connection with your community and have a great time
with friends and family, THIS is the event for you this
holiday season!
Bring the advent season alive with a compelling retelling of Christmas we would love for you to experience

2nd Annual Harry Potter Gala
The LV Rogers High Schools Amnesty group will be

hosting a 2nd Annual Harry Potter Gala to raise money
for the UN Refugee Agency on Saturday, December 10 at
the Civic Theatre in Nelson.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) protects the rights
and well-being of refugees all over the world. Their efforts
are currently occupied in providing asylum, safety and
advocacy to refugees and displaced persons from Syria,
Iraq, South Sudan and other war-torn and dangerous
situations everywhere. This event is a great way to learn
about and raise funds for the UNCHR, while enjoying a
magical adventure to the world of Harry Potter!
This year the film shown will be Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets. The event will be taking place at the
Civic Theatre on Saturday, December 10 with doors opening at 3 pm and the movie starting at 4 pm. Tickets can be
bought at Otter Books for $8-$10. Everyone is encouraged
to come in costume, there will be door prizes, trivia and

The Reluctant Dragon
Two Classic Plays In One Show
Audiences of all ages are invited to this years Homelinks theatrical production with two classic plays rolled
into one engaging show: The Secret Garden and The
Reluctant Dragon.
Homelinks students aged five to sixteen are bringing to life these two magical tales. In uniquely different
ways these two stories both speak to the power of coming
together with others and finding ones true voice.
In The Secret Garden (based on Frances Hodgson Burnetts well known story published in 1911) two unhappy
children, Mary and Collin, become transformed through
bringing a secret garden back to life with the help of
Dickon, a boy deeply connected with the natural world.
This charming and hope filled story tells of friendship,
magic and new possibility.
The Reluctant Dragon (original story by Kenneth Grahame, 1898) is a dragon tale with a twist. An erudite and
poetry loving dragon is helped by a friendly family and is
ultimately accepted by the bigger community. In the end,
friendship and love win against fear and suspicion, just as
we hope they do in real life!
Show times are Wednesday, December 7 and Thursday,
December 8 at 4 pm at the Covenant Church, 702 Stanley
Street, Nelson. The show is approximately 1 hour and 40
minutes long and admission is by donation.

passing of Henning Tage Pihl on
November 12, 2016 at the age of 83
years. He was predeceased by his
ex-wife, Mary; his parents Anias &
Anna Pihl of Denmark; brothers Peter, Poul (Grethe), Tage of Denmark,
Kaj of Sweden; sisters Kirsten (Kaj),
Ketty, Ingrid of Denmark, and Inger
(Neils Carl) of Alberta.
He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory his son
Christopher (Sandra) of BC, daughters Suzette (John),
Karen (Moe) of Alberta and Annette of Manitoba;
grandchildren Allyse, Bryan (Nikki), Christopher,
Kyle, Bradley, Kurtis, Chelsea, Ben; step-grandchildren

Henning was born in Randers, Denmark on October

1, 1933. After serving in the Danish army, he chose to
immigrate to Canada in 1956 where he lived with his
sister, Inger and worked as a farmhand, then in forestry
as a faller. During that time he met his wife, Mary. They
married in 1963 and started their family in Campbell
River, BC. In 1968 they moved to Winlaw, BC to raise
their family and begin farming.
Henning worked as a logger while he began his mushroom farm with the help of his family. After years of
struggling to keep the mushroom farm running and the
demise of his marriage, he chose to leave it behind and
start anew in Toronto, working with his nephew, Ken.
Once retired, Henning lived the remainder of his life
overlooking the Great Lakes, puttering around with
computers/gaming systems and trying all the different
cuisines with Ken & Elsa.
Cremation has taken place at his request. A very special
thank you to Ken, Elsa & family for taking care of Dad
during his fight with cancer. The family would like to
thank the staff at the Kensington Hospice and Basic
Funeral Home for their kindness and support. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made in Hennings memory to
the Cancer Society or the charity of choice.

The West Kootenay
Every Tuesday in December will be a 2 for 1 Tuesday

in the West Kootenay. On these days, all transit passengers who bring a travel buddy on board will pay only one
fare. All fare products will be accepted, including cash and
monthly passes, for the 2 for 1 program.
BC Transit is proud to be partnering with the Regional
District of Kootenay Boundary, the Regional District
Central Kootenay and the City of Nelson to support this
initiative, which makes it even easier for locals to use
environmentally-friendly public transportation.
The West Kootenay as a region has already experienced
exceptional growth in transit usage. In 2015/2016, ridership increased across all three transit systems, including
10% in Nelson, 7% in Kootenay Boundary and 8% in Kootenay Lake West. This promotion will only support further growth moving forward.

A Partnership To Help
Young Entrepreneurs
Community Futures Junior Dragons Den and JA British Columbia are teaming up to help young entrepreneurs
in the Kootenays. Students throughout the region who are
enrolled in JABCs Be Entrepreneurial program now have
a competitive advantage when preparing to enter Junior
Dragons Den, a Columbia Basin-wide initiative where
qualifying young entrepreneurs pitch their business idea
to a panel of judges, in a live show format.
The Be Entrepreneurial program is one of the many
classroom-based learning programs available to students
through JA British Columbia, stated Don Freschi, GM
at Community Futures in Trail. It covers everything
from finance to product development and is the perfect
four hour prep course for students when preparing their
business concept pitch for a chance to compete, added
Freschi.
At JABC we believe in the power of partnership, and
we are very pleased to be partnering with Community
Futures(CF) to give young people in the Columbia Basin
area the benefits of both Be Entrepreneurial and CFs,
Junior Dragons Den competition, said Jason Ranchoux,
regional manager, Interior.
Modelled after CBCs The Dragons Den, Junior Dragons Den, which started as a West Kootenay-Boundary
student business competition three years ago, expanded
throughout the Kootenays in the fall of 2015.
Led by Community Futures, Junior Dragons Den is
open to students from grades seven through to post secondary with regional competitions taking place in Nelson
on April 20, 2017 and in Cranbrook on April 24, 2017.
The winners from each respective competition will automatically advance to compete in the Junior Dragons Den
championship which will be held on May 6, 2017 at the
Bailey Theatre in Trail.
Submissions are evaluated based on finances, marketability, the product or service idea and the plan presented.
Registration for Junior Dragons Den is now open and
applications can be accessed via www.juniordragonsden.
com
