Solar Radiation
Solar radiation is the primary natural energy source of
the Earth. (Other natural sources are: geothermal heat
flux from the earth interior, natural terrestrial
radioactivity,cosmic radiation. These are negligible!)
Solar radiation mainly emanates as electromagnetic
radiation from the surface of the sun (photosphere). It
is originated by several nuclear fusion processes in
the interior of the sun.

The Earths annual and global mean energy balance. Of the incoming solar radiation, 49% (168 Wm-2) is absorbed by the
surface. That heat is returned to the atmosphere as sensible heat, as evapotranspiration (latent heat) and as thermal
infrared radiation. Most of this radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere, which in turn emits radiation both up and down.
The radiation lost to space comes from cloud tops and atmospheric regions much colder than the surface. This causes a
greenhouse effect. Source: Kiehl and Trenberth, 1997: Earths Annual Global Mean Energy Budget, Bull. Am. Met. Soc. 78,

Solar Constant
The solar constant is the amount of energy
received in unit time on a unit area
perpendicular to the suns direction at the
mean distance of the earth from the sun.
In the literature a value of 1353W/m is given
frequently.

Extraterrestrial Radiation
The orbit of the earth around the sun is slightly
elliptical with the sun at one of the foci and therefore
causes a change of the sun-earth distance throughout
the year. This variation is expressed by the
eccentricity correction factor (Spencer,1971):

Irradiance
Irradiance, I, is defined as the intensity of solar radiation per
unit time on a unit surface area of the earth. The unit of I is
taken as W/m2.

Insolation
Insolation is the total energy received from the sun in
a day in a unit surface area on the earth.
The unit of insolation is watt-hour per sq.m. per day.
For Nepal the yearly average insolation can be taken
around 4500 to 5500 Wh/m2/day.
