Developing Map Skills
2nd Grade
Social Studies/Geography
Lesson length: 60 minutes, or one class period

State Objectives
SOL 2.4 Students will need to locate the United States, China, and Egypt on the World
Map. They will need to understand the relationships between culture and environment of
ancient Egypt and China. Locate the regions of Lakota, Powhatan, and Pueblo Indians on
US maps. Students will need to understand the relationship between the culture and
environment for these areas also.
SOL 2.5 -The student will develop map skills by:
a) locating the seven continents, five oceans, and equator on maps and globes.
b) locate James River, Mississippi River, Rio Grande, Huang Ge, and Nile River, also locate
the Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains. Students must also locate the Great
Lakes in the United States and other countries.
SOL 2.6 Students will demonstrate map skills by constructing simple maps, using title,
map legend, and compass rose.

Media:
Computers with internet access (take students to the computer lab for about an hour)

Methods
Display the world map on the wall, allow students to use google earth, and their text books
to fill out the map worksheet. This work sheet has a fill in the blank map, vocabulary words,
and questions about each area being studied.
Small group centers
Students will go over their answers with one another and compare answers. They
will work together to make sure they have they correct answers and correct the
incorrect ones. They will also work in pairs to navigate google maps and get familiar
with the technology.
Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods
Media:
The students will use the computer lab to do research themselves and use google earth.
They will then use the wall map and their textbooks to make sure these answers are correct.
They will double check their work and work in pairs to go over the answers and maybe learn
something new from their partner.
Materials:
Computer- To use google earth to look up the location of Egypt, the United States, and
China.
Map Worksheet- Used to exercise the use of students knowledge and familiarize them with
the skill of using a map.
Text Book- To look up and verify the correct answers.
Pencil- To write down the answers.
Wall world Map- Also to exercise the skill of using a map and familiarizing the students with
the skill of geography.
Methods:
Whole Group Map Skills Use the map to show students not only where China, the United
States, and China are located, but also the mountain ranges and rivers in these areas. After
each student has individual completed the worksheet, they will get with a partner to review
their answers. After giving the students time to review with a partner and correct any
incorrect answers, we will then review as a class using the wall map and google earth.

Student Performance:
The students will be evaluated on how well they work independently, with a partner and as a
whole class. This will also test their prior and current knowledge of the geography of China,
the United States, and Egypt. They will know how to locate these areas on a map and
locate their rivers and mountain ranges. By using the textbook, they will be reading and
learning more information about the subject and also familiarize themselves on how to look
up and scan their textbooks. Using the computer will help their technology skills and
introduce them to google earth. The wall map will give the students a hands on visual of the
world and a better look at the geographical location of each location and its characteristics.
Instructor Performance:
During independent and group time, teacher will walk around and make sure students are
understanding and using the material properly. They will also answer any questions
students may have about the material.
Media Performance:
The media serves as an aid and learning tool for the students to access a wide variety of
information on China, the United States, and Egypt. If students are able to log research
information that pertains to each aspect of the chart, then the media was used successfully.
