questionsofwhatachievinggenderequalityorempoweringwomen
actuallymeans(moreonthisinalaterpost),somewomensgroups,
bothlocallybasedaninternationallyhavequestionedwhethercurrent
practicesofdevelopmentthroughglobalizationhaveactuallyachieved
theseends.

ThefirstreportIreadatmyinternship,theArabWomensDevelopment
Report2001,explainedthatthebenefitsofglobalrestructuringareto
dateunequallydistributed.Itfurthersbyexplainedfarfromreducing
internationalmigrationflowsbymovingproductsinsteadofpeople,
globalizationsmovershavebecomeitslosers.Thisfairlyevidentin
manycountrieswherebenefitsofglobalizationhaveaccumulatedwith
theownersofmultinationalcorporationswherethebackboneofthe
laborforceoftenpreviouslyparttimeormigrantworkersreceive
almostnocompensationfortheirwork.Youdon'thavetolookfartosee
picturesandhearstoriesofwomenandchildreninhorribleworking
conditionsinsweatshopsindevelopingcountries.Itsnotauniversal
trend,butitscertainlyvisible.

Sotobehonest,thereisntreallyaconclusiontothispostrightnow,
althoughIcertainlyhavemorethoughts.AndIcertainlywantto
exploretheentanglement,forbetterorworse,ofglobalizationand
developmentthroughmyinternship.
