formula of Tawheed (Islamic
Monotheism) for which human
beings are created.

partners with Allaah, such as

Qur'an), but Allaahs Messenger,"

Messenger gives you, take it, and

above normal (37 C). For many people this can be
a very uncomfortable experience and a worrying
one. However not so for the believer, who has
knowledge of the Sunnah and understands it.
There comes to us a narration that Allaahs
Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) once
smiled and stated:
The affair of the believer is wonderful! All affairs
of his are good and that is for none except the
believer. If he is blessed with prosperity he thanks
(Allaah) and that is good for him. And when he is
afflicted with an adversity he perseveres and that
is also good for him. (Muslim).
And as the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa
sallam) said:
"Indeed amazing is the affair of the mu`min
(believer). And this is not for anyone except the
believer. If he is given something good, he is
thankful, and this is good for him. And if he is
afflicted with a hardship, then he is patient, and it
is good for him." (Muslim)

and rids his body from dead
substances and germs and
therefore should be seen as a
blessing in disguise.
Is there a remedy?
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) tells us
to reduce the fever with water. The same method
is still applied today. Putting cold pads on a
patients forehead is still used in a lot of hospitals
and by doctors even though fever reducing
medicines are abundant, like aspirin, paracetamol
(or acetaminophen, which is the active ingredient
in Tylenol) and others.
Using water to reduce fevers is not limited to
using cold pads. Drinking a lot of fluids is also
helpful. This is also understood from the wordings
of the Prophetic narration: cool it with water.
Water is either what the patient drinks, what is
given intravenously or what the patient puts on
his face or body to cool the fever.

Question one: When did you become
Muslim?
I entered Islam in the summer of 1991
Question two: How did your family react to
it?
I was born into a Jamaican family, and it is
well known that most Jamaicans are quite
staunch Christians. Though my parents were
not strong practising Christians our family
was raised on Christian ethics. My father
was of a seventh day Adventist background
and they are known to be a Puritan Christian
denomination. Since I was heavily involved
in gang culture anything that could take me
away from that was welcomed by my family.
I think though, that they initially thought it
was a phase I was going through and I would
leave gun culture due to it and then
probably eventually leave it.

become Muslim since your reversion? If yes

Yes. My father embraced Islam while I was
still a student in the Islamic University of
Medina. He suffered from diabetes and
became very ill and was admitted into
hospital while I was in the second year of my
study in the faculty of Hadeeth. I was given

knew that my father was receptive to the
dawah before I even went away to study.
That was because when I used to speak to
the family about Islam he would be in the
room and would silently listen. What I know
of him is that if you would disapprove of
something then he would let his disapproval
be known. Also due to his seventh day
Adventist background, I knew that he would
be more appreciative of the pure
monotheistic message of Islam and the
Qur'an. So I returned and began to give him
dawah and call him to Islam, it didn't take
long for him to accept the message though
he found difficulty speaking. And so he
embraced two weeks before he passed away
Al hamdullillah and may Allaah have mercy
upon him. When I informed shaikh Ubaid of
the good news he was extremely happy and
named him Ahmad. Though it greatly
affected that year of study in the faculty (as I
had to stay in England much longer than the
time that was given to me) this is a drop in
the ocean compared to the great good that
was achieved because of it. I also have three
brothers and two sisters who are all older
than me. My brothers have said that after
them hearing the dawah, if they were ever
to become religious than they would
embrace Islam so I make dua that Allaah
guides them all.

Question four: What made you want to
leave the life you once led?
Since the age of 12, I was involved with
the largest most notorious gang in
Birmingham at the time known as the
inch-I crew. Inch-I (who went on to
become the now well-known Johnson
Crew) controlled the North West corridor
of Birmingham, but its members were
feared citywide. After years of gang
affiliation I was eventually imprisoned
due to gang related offenses. Looking
back I consider this to be the beginnings
of my step towards being guided.
Although I didn't get dawah in prison, I
did get long periods of reflection. I also
did a lot of reading and studying in
general and thus my frame of mind was
altered. After release I decided to look
for a close companion of mine who I was
imprisoned with, who was also Inch-I and
who was one of the few inmates in that
here.

Birmingham. Rumour had it that he had
gone mad after his release so I took it
upon myself to try and find him. When I
eventually came across him, I found him
wearing a Pakistani salwar khamees and
a koofi and then realised why people
were saying that he had gone mad.
Knowing that he wasnt un-intelligent, I
decided that I would look into exactly
what had come over him. I invited him to
my home and he brought a number of
books with him among them a Qur'an. He
began to speak about the truths that he
had discovered, the errors in the Bible,
various prophecies, the call of the
prophets and the realities of death. He
clarified biblical misconceptions that I
had always queried, and established
concepts that I had always thought to be
correct. Then he left the Qur'an with me
and other books which I began to read.
From the first things that I did was that I
stopped drinking intoxicants. With a
clearer head I was able to fully grasp the
concepts that were present in Quran. I
was struck by how powerful the book
was, its message and wording, and I used
to wash before reading it which
increased the feeling of awe that I had for
it. It was not long until I began to debate
with people as though I was Muslim but I
had not yet embraced Islam.

upbringing) of this generation. If its tarbiyyah is
good, then there will be happiness - both in
this world and the Hereafter. If it is not, then
there will be misery, and it will be a rope
around your necks - since there occurs in the
hadeeth: Each of you is a shepherd, and each
of you will be questioned about those who you
are responsible for. (Bukhari (#13/111) and
Muslim (# 1829))

Making the House into a place of Remembrance
The example of the home in which Allaah is remembered and the home in which Allaah is not
remembered, is like comparing the living and the dead (Muslim (1/539))
When a man enters his home and he remembers the Name of Allaah, the

place for you to spend the night here and there is no food to eat here' If he
enters his home and does not remember the name of Allaah while entering;
Shaytaan says: 'There is a place for you to spend the night. If he does not
remember the name of Allaah while eating he says: 'There is a place for you
to eat and spend the night (Muslim 3/1599)
The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: The best prayer of the man is in his home except the

Shaykh Saalih Luhaydan (hafidahullah) mentioned a nice benefit during his class tonight at the Haram
in Makkah(7/2/2009). He mentioned that, If you come across someone performing an innovation,
remember to praise Allaah, the Most high. Remember to praise Allaah, the Most High, because he
hasnt tested you with that innovation.
He also mentioned that, No one is safe from misguidance. So remember to constantly ask Allaah to
keep you on the straight path.
A duaa that he mentioned pertaining to this is:

Allaahs Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) saying, All the hearts of the offspring of Aadam are
between two fingers of Ar-Rehmans Fingers, as one heart. He turns it
(in any direction) as He wills. Then Allaahs Messenger said, O Allaah!

It is also reported by Imaam Ahmad , from the hadeeth of Aisha
(RadhiAllaahu anhu): The Dua which the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi

Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (Radi Allaahu anhu)
He was the first to accept Islam from amongst the men, the friend of the Messenger of Allaah ( sallallaahu 'alayhi wa
sallam) , the first Khalifah of the Muslims. He is Abdullaah bin Abee Quhafah Uthmaan bin Aamir al-Qurashee at-
Taymee, (RadhiAllaahu anhu). He was called Ateeq because he had a beautiful face. Amr bin al-Aas asked: O
Messenger of Allaah which of the men is most beloved to you? He said: Abu Bakr. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mutim said: My father told me that a woman came to the Messenger of Allaah & spoke to him
about something, and then he ordered her with something, so she said: O Messenger of Allaah if I dont find you? So he
said: If you dont find me, go to Abu Bakr. (Bukhari & Muslim)
Alee said: The best of this Ummah after its Prophet is Abu Bakr & Umar.
It was narrated from Jundub (RadhiAllaahu anhu) that he heard the Messenger Of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa
sallam) Indeed I free myself from you before Allaah that I took a close friend amongst you, indeed Allaah took me as a
close friend, as He took Ibraheem as a close friend. If I was to take someone from my Ummah as a close friend, I would
have taken Abu Bakr as my close friend.
From Abu Huraira (RadhiAllaahu anhu) that he heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) say 'No
wealth ever benefitted me as did the wealth of Abu Bakr.' When Abu Bakr heard this he began to cry
and said: 'O Messenger of Allaah am I and my wealth not for you? Alee

my companion? He (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) asked this two times.
Abu Bakr was not harmed again after that.
Az-Zuhree said: Abu Bakr requested in his will that he be washed by his wife Asmaa bint Umays & if she cannot then she
should take the help of his son Abdur-Rahmaan.
He was buried next to the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), & his head was placed near to the
shoulders of the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

Back 2 Basics: The Importance of Intention
Sincerity is the freeing of one's intentions from all
impurities in order to come nearer to Allaah. It is
to ensure that the intentions behind all acts of
worship and obedience to Allaah are exclusively
for His pleasure.
Sincerity is a condition for Allaah's acceptance of
good deeds performed in accordance with the
Sunnah of the Prophet, (sallallaahu alayhi wa
sallam). Allaah has commanded this in the Qur'an:
"And they have been commanded to worship only
Allaah, being sincere towards Him in their deen and
true. (al Quran 98:5)
Furthermore it has been Narrated by 'Umar Ibn
al-Khattab (RadhiAllaahu anhu) who heard the
Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu sallallaahu
'alayhi wa sallam) saying: "The reward of deeds
depends upon the intentions, and every person will
get the reward according to what he has intended.
So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a
woman to marry, his emigration was for what he
emigrated for." (Bukhari)
Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyyad (rahimahullaah)
said: Allaah 'azza wa jall accepts only those
deeds which are both correct and sincere (pure).
If the deed is done correctly but not sincerely, it
will not be accepted. And if it is sincere but not
correct, it will not be accepted." He was asked,
"Abu 'Ali! What is the sincere and correct deed?"
He replied, "The sincere deed is one that is done
only for Allaah 'azza wa jall. And the correct
deed is one done according to the Sunnah."
It has been stated, "Ikhlaas (Sincerity) is that you
do not request anyone to witness your action
except Allaah, and that you do not seek anyone
to reward you (for it) except Him".
There comes another narration from Abu
Hurayrah: I heard the Messenger of Allaah
(sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) say: The first man
(whose case) will be decided on the Day of
Judgment, will be a man who died as a martyr. He
shall be brought (before the Judgment Seat).
Allaah will make him recount His blessings and he
will admit to them. Allaah will say: What did you
do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I
fought for Thee until I died as a martyr. Allaah will

say: You have told a lie. You fought so that you might
be called a "brave warrior". And you were called so.
(Then) orders will be passed against him and he will be
dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell.
Then there will be brought forward a man who
acquired knowledge and imparted it (to others) and
recited the Qur'an. He will be brought, Allaah will
make him recount His blessings and he will recount
them (and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime).
Then Allaah will ask: What did you do (to requite these
blessings)? He will say: I acquired knowledge and
disseminated it and recited the Qur'an, seeking Thy
pleasure. Allaah will say: You have told a
lie. You acquired knowledge so that you The Reward of

(Abu Nu'aym, Bayhaqee) And in a narration in al-
Bayhaqee, "Hide your good deed like you hide your
evil deed, and do not be amazed with your own
action, for you do not know
