Unit: Mix and Flow of Matter

Date: Oct 17, 2016

Time Duration: 40min

Emma Kerschbaum
Lesson Title/Focus: Density Tower

Outcomes from POS

GLO: 3. Investigate and compare the properties of gases and liquids: and relate
variations in their viscosity, density, buoyancy, and compressibility to the
particle model of matter.
SLO: 3.2 Observe the mass and volume of a liquid, and calculate its density
using the formula

D=

m
v

KSA #s

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Measure the mass of a liquid
2. Calculate the density of a liquid
3. Organize liquids in order of density

Handout 1
Corn syrup
Cooking oil
Water
Dishsoap
Honey
Food coloring
Milk
Maple syrup

EA Instructions
As you go around during the weighing portion check their values against the table key.
Ive moved the struggling students to the back two tables if you could keep an eye on
them.
Prep
-Set up graduated cylinder
-copy table onto board
-have groups on board and numbers on tables to make for easy transition to new seating
plan.

Assessment of Prior Knowledge
Bell work:
How do we calculate density?

D=

m
g
g
= 3
v cm mL

Density is higher in solids and decreases as space increases

Attention grabber
Graduated cylinder done up as density gradient.
Lab coat
I want to build this gradient again but I cant remember the order
Body
Learning Activity #1 Density cylinder: mass
-Explain activity
-given information; (mass of empty beaker=29.2g), (volume of liquid = 15mL)
-Number off in groups 1-4
-Students roles: retrieve liquid sample (1), retrieve scale(2), recorder(3), speaker (4)
-measure the mass of the liquid
-as class fill in the table values for mass of liquid
Learning Activity #2 Density cylinder: density calculations
- individually calculate density for all liquids show work
- Fill in board table as class
