Part 1: Introduction
1.1 Introduction to Methods Engineering Study
The heart and soul of Industrial Engineering is Methods Engineering.
Methods Engineering is a course concerned with the human integration in industrial production
processes, it basically tackles about the flow of industrial process in which a worker is connected. This
course aims to make the production of a certain company become more effective- doing the right things,
and efficient- doing things right the first time. The terms operation analysis, work design and simplification
are frequently used interchangeably for Methods Engineering.
Methods Engineering covers various topics. Essentially, these are: project selection which
involves new product designs, products costs, etc. Project selection methods include Pareto analysis,
Ishikawa diagram (Fish Diagram), Gantt charts, and other job analysis guides; acquisition and presentation
of data is where flow diagram is usually employed to represent the manufacturing process associated with
the product and data collected; analysis of data is the decision-making on several things that comprises the
purpose, parts, characteristics, specifications, process design, tooling, working conditions, and
fundamentally scrutinizing the who, what, when, where, why, and how specifics to lead to the development
of an optimum method; developing an ideal/optimum method of how work should be done is also a topic
that this course attacks. Worker-machine ratio, random time of occurrence and need of servicing variables,
and the number of workers and workstations are addressed in this topic through the use of synchronous
servicing, random servicing, and line balancing, respectively; lastly, methods implementation, the step of
selling the idea to the company or execution of the most ideal method. Each method design in this course
has its own advantages and disadvantages, but choosing or arriving to the best method is based thru criteria
and concept involving cost-benefit analysis and economic analysis.
The study undertook the increasing demand of water refilling stations in the Philippines. Water
refilling station, an alternative source of drinking water supply in the country, managed by private
entrepreneurs offer a cheaper and more convenient solution to the publics drinking water needs than
bottled water or the use of household filters. The study aimed to describe the main product of the refilling
station which is the purified drinking water, its purification process and production, and present it through
different techniques, specifically through flow process chart and flow diagram.
The study is actually for micro-business company and points out its general production process
through the application of Methods Engineering techniques. The subject of the study is the Wenfer Purified
Drinking Water at Lapu-Lapu City. The study also wanted to give recommendations to the Wenfer Purified
Drinking Water on how to optimize their method of production and better their ways of processing purified
water.
Methods Engineering is a huge and important aspect that helps a company become successful.
Nowadays, technology has been a great partner of Methods Engineering in making the processes of
different operations easier, faster, and more convenient to the producers. The study will widen the
knowledge of people on this type of business.

1.3 Company Profile/ History

The water refilling station business Wenfer Purified Drinking Water started operations on
October 4, 2014. The name Wenfer was originated from a combination of the ownersnames, Rowena
and Fernando Cabigas. It is currently located at Sudtunggan, Basak,Lapu- Lapu City alongthe Anami
Homes Subdivision with only one branch, opens every Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Ms. Rowena, the main operator of the business, first planned on having a business of selling
kiosks inside malls but then she realized that it would need them a huge amount for business capital. So
then, she finally decided to put up with this kind of business because she believed that Water is like rice, it
is a necessity for us all. Ms. Rowena came up with this kind of businesssince she only wanted a firm that
focuses mainly with only one product for easier control, so she decided to put up a water refilling station
which does not only offer refilling gallons but also delivers and supplies water to other retailers of the same
business.
Based from Ms. Rowena, this kind of business is a form of recreation after she retired from being
a front office team leader in a 7-star hotel located in Dubai for almost 12 years. This business helps finance
their familys needs.

For this business to get established, it needed her six hundred thousand pesos (Php 600,000) as a
capital for investment, where four hundred thousand pesos (Php 400,000) of which was spent for the
machine, and two hundred thousand pesos (Php 200,000) for the delivery car. Ms. Rowena hopes to gain
back her capital in three and a half years. She also mentioned that as of now, the business is not understated
since they earn a revenue of fifty-three thousand pesos (Php 53,000) and spend thirty thousand pesos (Php
30,000) for their operating expenses, giving them a twenty-three thousand pesos (Php 23,000) net income
monthly.
In a business, there are always problems that test the capabilities of the owner on how he/she deals
with it. One of which that WenferPurified Drinking Water has faced are problems involving machines,
equipment, etc. that are caused by environmental factors and possibly affect the processes in producing the
product. For Ms. Rowena, it is always important to provide the customers clean and trusted water with the
best quality.
Over the years, Ms. Rowena hopes that Wenfer Purified Drinking Water will reach its peak in its
market and become a well-known, visionary business not only in Cebu, but eventually across the nation.

2.1 Description of the Product to be studied
The main product that Wenfer Purified Drinking Water produces is purified drinking water.
Purified water is water that was processed and filtered mechanically isolating wastes or impurities from a
cleaned water ready for drinking. In conversational English, purified water is also known as water which
has been treated to neutralize.
Water has become more and more a commodity than a basic necessity. A form of purified water is
distilled water which is water formed through the process distillation, but what Wenfer Purified Drinking
Water offers is only purified water formed through purification with reverse osmosis treatment method.

2.2 General Production Process and Description of the of each Processes

Water Purification is the process of removing unwanted biological contaminants, undesirable
solids and gases from water that is contaminated. The goal of this process is to turn water fit for drinking.
The efficiency of water purification system in removing impurities is high. A special treatment method used
by Wenfer Purified Drinking Water is called reverse osmosis, a process where solvent goes through a
porous membrane and has various steps, these purification- reverse osmosis steps are:
A. Raw Water Tank (Drain)
The raw water placed inside the tank is drained going to the feed pump being prepared
for the initial filtration.
B. Pre-Filters for Reverse Osmosis
a. Media Filter
Media filter is used to protect water quality in streams, rivers, and lakes. Sand is the most
common filter material. Basically, this removes sediments such as rust and particles that
are invisible to the naked eye.
b. Carbon Filter
Carbon filter typically contains either granular activated carbon (GAC) or powdered
block carbon. This filter generally has a higher contaminant removal ratio. This removes
all organic chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, offensive odor and bad taste.
c. Softener
This third filter softens the water for it to become more healthy and clean.
C. Flushing
The raw water that was processed through the three pre-filters for Reverse Osmosis
flushes to two different ways. 60% is water, 40% is purified.
D. Ozone Generator or Ozonator
This generator inhibits the growth of bacteria in the product tank and prolongs the shelf
life of purified water. The product is then pump to the Reverse Osmosis membrane.
E. Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) Membrane
The heart of the system and the most expensive unit; removes inorganic minerals,
bacteria and viruses while retaining its oxygen content.
F. Post- Carbon Filter
This filter improves the taste of water.
G. Ultaviolet Lamp
This device ensures that the water is free from disease-causing micro-organisms.
H. Point of Use
In this part, the purified water is ready to drink or released in the faucet.

2.5 Analysis of the Present System and Problem Identification

Water Refilling Station is one of the growing businesses in the Philippines. Many Filipinos make
use of these stations as a source of their basic necessity water. As it becomes known to our country, this
business is expected to be healthy as its product directly connects with our health.; To be healthy means
that the water refilling station should be operating in the most effective and organized manner. With this,
the researchers have analyzed the following on the present system at Wenfer Purified Drinking Water.
The Wenfer Purified Drinking Water uses a special purification method called reverse osmosis.
This process undergoes various sub-processes, as discussed on section 2.2. It has been a great help to the
company as it makes their production a lot easier. Also, reverse osmosis has been proven by studies that the
water that has undergone this process is about 99% clean and healthy. The researchers believe that there is
no problem on the companys current process used.
The researchers would like to critique on the organizational system of the company and its area
capacity. First, a typical water refilling station should have at least one delivery man. With the interview
conducted by the researchers with the owner, the owner said that she is the one who delivers the orders of
their customers. Second, the area capacity of the refilling station is very small. Structurally, a water refilling
station can be operated with a minimum area of at least 20-25 square meters, but with the interview
conducted, Wenfer only has an area capacity of approximately 15-18 square meters.

Water refilling stations can be a good source of safe drinking water in the
Philippines. Purified water can meet the aesthetic standards easily detectable by the people
in terms of taste, odor and color. The efficient water purification processes can make the
quality of water superior to the traditional water systems. However, the risk of contamination
is possible if the handling practices are not closely monitored.
