Mandarin Chinese
The capital has been within the Mandarin area for most of the last millennium, making these
dialects very influential. Some form of Mandarin has served as a national lingua franca
since the 14th century. In the early 20th century, a standard form based on the Beijing
dialect, with elements from other Mandarin dialects, was adopted as the national language.
Standard Chinese is the official language of the People's Republic of China and Taiwan
(Republic of China) and one of the four official languages of Singapore. It is also one of the
most frequently used varieties of Chinese among Chinese diaspora communities
internationally.
Comparison of dictionaries produced in the two areas will show that there are few
substantial differences. However, both versions of "school-standard" Chinese are often
quite different from the Mandarin dialects that are spoken in accordance with regional
habits, and neither is wholly identical to the Beijing dialect. The written forms of Standard
Chinese are also essentially equivalent, although simplified characters are used in
Mainland China, Malaysia and Singapore while people in Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong
generally use traditional characters.
This course is taught in Mandarin Chinese and English. Our programme aims to develop
the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as cultural
awareness. Our Chinese Language Programme provides a wide range of quality Chinese
language and cultural courses delivered by qualified teachers and professionals for those
who hope to improve their Chinese language proficiency and cultural awareness. From our
beginners to advanced courses or our private tutoring, you will surely find a course and
level best suited to your needs. The Chinese language courses are in 6 levels, Level 1
(beginners) to Level 6 (advanced) and there is a literacy course focused on reading and
writing.

Japanese Language
Japan is currently at the forefront in both technological and economical prowess. With
Japan's businesses and customer base expanding all across Asia and the rest of the world,
Japanese is a much sought after language by many international corporations as a means
to penetrate the previously stand-alone Japanese market. The rising fascination with
Japanese culture in younger generations has also pushed Japanese language into the
spotlight as a much sought after foreign language.
The Japanese language features three sets of characters in written form: kanji, romanji and
hiragana. The language and its proper usage is also heavily saturated in local culture and
etiquette, making it a context heavy language that requires constant practice and immersion
to fully utilize. Our teachers strive to ensure students pick up the language smoothly
through constant practice and live simulations.
Japanese Courses, which offer a systematically arranged general Japanese curriculum, are
held for students from beginner to upper intermediate level (Levels 1 to 6). The courses
offer a standardized syllabus and teaching materials. They allow students to study the four
basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in a comprehensive way. There is also
a course that allows students to focus on the study of kanji, and On-line Japanese that
allow distance learning of the Japanese language.

English Language
English has ceased to be an "English language" in the sense of belonging only to people
who are ethnically English. Use of English is growing country-by-country internally and for
international communication. Most people learn English for practical rather than ideological
reasons. Many speakers of English in Africa have become part of an "Afro-Saxon" language
community that unites Africans from different countries. English is used as the language for
wider communication in countries around the world. Thus English has grown in worldwide
use much more than any constructed language proposed as an international auxiliary
language, including Esperanto.
Our English programme is open to non-native speakers of English who have a serious
desire to improve their language skills. This challenging program is useful to working
professionals and to students preparing for university study or professional programmes.
The course of study is based on an integrated-skills approach with listening, speaking,
reading, writing and grammar components. Fluency and accuracy in both spoken and
written English are emphasised. There are seven levels in the IEP. Levels 1-3 Beginning
through low intermediate students take classes with specific attention to oral
communication, reading and writing, as well as some direct attention to grammar, using a
11

wide range of resources. Level 4 Intermediate students take classes that emphasize
academic preparation in a combined reading/writing course, an oral communication course,
and a grammar course. In addition, Level 4 students take a class in extensive reading.
Levels 5-6 High intermediate students attend a required core set of classes which are a
reading-writing course, an oral communication course, and a grammar course. Students in
Level 6 can choose an optional skill-based or content-based elective class. Level 7
Advanced students attend a required core reading-writing course and then choose two or
three additional skill or content elective courses. This level is designed to be repeated by
students who are advanced but require further language study for their intended majors.
Topics are changed every session.

Thai Language (New)

Thai, also known as Siamese or Central Thai, is the national and official language of
Thailand and the native language of the Thai people and the vast majority of Thai Chinese.
Thai is a member of the Tai group of the TaiKadai language family. Over half of the words
in Thai are borrowed from Pali, Sanskrit and Old Khmer. It is a tonal and analytic language.
Thai also has a complex orthography and relational markers.

12

Thai is the national language of Thailand. Like Chinese, Thai is a tonal language. It has five
tones (meaning that words or syllables with similar sounds have a different meaning
depending on the high, low, rising, falling or level tone or pitch of the sound). For example,
the Thai word maa means "horse" when pronounced with a high pitch, "come" with a
medium pitch, and "dog with a rising pitch. To untrained ears the differences between tones
is often very hard to detect. Because Thai is tonal it is very difficult for non-Thai- speakers
to speak even if you have a phrase book. The Thai language also has its own alphabet,
with 44 consonants, 30 vowels and nine tonal signs.
Both spoken and written Thai are quite different from many other languages and hence too
complicated for non-native speakers to pick up quickly. The Thai language is neatly and
pleasantly structured, reflecting the Thai identity in many ways. It is used only in Thailand,
and communicates the gentle nature of the Thai people, for example, through the particles,
such as khrap for men and kha for women. Such particles vary with the status of the
speakers and the persons spoken to. These are further complicated in the royal language,
not to mention a large vocabulary of royal words.

individual initiative and self-discipline of each student and the commitment of the student's
selected teacher.
