Chapter 1
Introduction
Overview
Release 4.5.1 is a minor upgrade from Release 4.5 with respect to
general WorkStation software. However, Release 4.5.1 adds support for
Metso redundant MIO Modules present in the new 5.1 ACN Release,
using the new EIBC buffer (9/38 build version and later). Please refer to
the Release 4.5.1 Release Updates Details section below.
Release 4.5 introduces support for maxACN and metsoDNA IO (MIO)
to the WorkStation.
The maxACN is an alternate processor for
maxDPU4F. The maxACN is designed to go in hand with MIO an
alternate I/O structure to the maxDNA maxPAC product. If you do not
have either the maxACN or MIO you are probably not interested with
this release.
Release 4.5 removes all DPU/ACN setup files from this
maxSTATION installation disk. It also removes the Virtual DPU files
from the installation disk. You must install all DPU/ACN files
including the Virtual DPU from the maxDPU4F installation disk. If
you are upgrading from a previous release, any existing files will not
be removed by the maxSTATION installation.
Release 4.4 introduced the new features:

maxSTATION File Synchronization

Version 2 of maxSTORIAN

With Release 4.4 and later, you must choose between Classic
maxSTORIAN and Version 2 maxSTORIAN during the installation
process.
Release 4.3 introduced a two-CD installation pack. The Pre-requisites
CD must be installed first. It is typically installed only once. Then the
Installation CD may be installed. The maxDNA Setup Helper utility will
guide the installer in correct CD installation.
Release 4.3.1 removes the DPU4F setup files from this maxSTATION
installation disk. In order to get the latest DPU4F files, you must
install them from the latest maxDPU4F installation disk. If you are

Metso Automation 278700

Release Overview Release 4.5.1

upgrading from a previous release, any existing files will not be removed
by the maxSTATION installation.
This document contains highlights of the changes and new features in this
release and as well as a list of bugs fixed. Descriptions of the bug fixes
can be found in section Bugs Fixed. There are other supporting
documents that give additional information about this release. For full
installation or upgrade refer to the Release 4.4 Installation Instructions
(278703_InstallationInstructions4.4.doc). For setup and operation of the
new features refer to the _Release 4.4 Manual Additions Folder (on the
Release CD) in the event that a new manual has not been released yet.
Release 4.3 includes support for Hyperthreading/Dual Core.
However, in order to use these features, the station requires a USB
dongle.

Release Compatibility
Release 4.x has many enhancements to various subsystems. Several
enhancements require some action on the part of the user before the 4.x
Release is installed:
Existing Virtual DPU MXT files will be incompatible with the new
virtual DPU. The existing database should be uploaded using the
maxDPUTools utility before the upgrade, then downloaded and a
new MXT file created after the upgrade to Release 4.4.
Release 4.x of maxDNA will work with previous DPU4E/F releases
going back to 2.1. This permits a system to be upgraded first by
upgrading the maxSTATIONs, followed by the DPU4E/Fs at a later date
when the system can either be shut down or placed in a fail-safe mode.
Release 4.4 does not include any DPU4E/F releases. For the most up-todate versions of the DPUs, refer to the Metso Automation Web site or the
latest version of the maxDPU4E/F Release media.
It should be noted that Release 2.x, 3.x maxSTATIONs and Release 4.x
maxSTATIONs are compatible with each other for daytoday
interaction. Subscriptions made from stations of any software revision to
those of the other revision will be successful. This will allow a gradual
transition to Version 4.
maxSTATION configuration tools (maxDPUTOOLS, maxVUE Editor)
are upward compatible only. Release 4.x displays cannot be used on a
Release 2.x station.
Note that there are special considerations for upgrade of Version 1.x
workstations. See Metso Customer Care.
Note that there are special considerations for support of IEC1131 as
applied to maxDPU4B. See Metso Customer Care.

1-2

Metso Automation 278700

Windows XP
Release 4.x runs only in a computer running Microsoft Windows XP.
Windows XP offers longer-term support than Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
or 2000 has; Windows XP offers a more-modern interface to the user;
and supports more hardware, such as USB ports.
As a result of the use of Windows XP, the maxSTATION now requires at
least 256MB of memory, due to the larger memory footprint occupied
by the operating system. While Version 4.x performs equivalently to
Version 3 (given the increased RAM), it may be time to consider a
processor upgrade at the same time to take advantage of the performance
of modern technology.
It is our recommendation that the workstation disk be reformatted to
install Windows XP (vs. an upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 or Windows
2000). Our experience is that this leads to the least problems upgrading
the operating system and the best long-term reliability.
Update details for all Release 4 versions are included below.

maxSCRIPT Additions in Support data quality propagation

Until this release, any local variables created by a script show good data
quality. New keywords and functions have been added to maxSCRIPT to
support propagation of data quality from an input value to a calculated
output (local) variable. This feature is described in detail in the
maxSCRIPT Users Guide included with this release. Briefly the new
keywords are:
Dim<X> variable as <Type>Q where <Type> is one of the
existing data types
SbpQuality Command used to assign SBP quality to a script
variable
SBP_QUALITY_<quality> - symbolic values to be used in
setting SBP quality
SbpQuality function used to extract SBP quality from a
variable
SimplifiedQuality function used to extract Simplified SBP
quality from a variable

maxDPUTools Changes in Support of MIO

The maxDPUTools utility is updated to support the configuration of
MIO with the new EIBC buffer present in the new 5.1 ACN release,
which features 32 extended modules or 16 modules with redundancy.

anywhere in the process tree view for quick return navigation via
keyboard shortcuts. Refer to the updated manual for details.

OPCGateway Client Improvements

The OPCGateway is now configured with an index assignment allowing
up to 50 running instances, rather than just 15 based on Domains.
Domain assignments are no longer required to be unique to a
configuration. The option now exists to assign configured points an
OBJType, to enable creating custom graphic displays with callup linked
to OBJType such as a pop-up, detail, or macro. The option exists to track
digital OPC values and generate alarms on a state change with
configurable alarm text. Refer to the updated OPC manual.

Changes have been made to the System Menu display for MIO. The old
System Status DPU4E and System Status DPU4F buttons have been
replaced by one System Status DPU/ACN button that swaps to a new
version of the DPU4FStatus display. A sample display swap button is
also provided to access the new OPC A&E Client Status display.

DPU4FStatus Display Changes

This display now contains template annunciators for DPU4E, DPU4F
and ACN controllers. The user should use these templates to create a
Status display that will be opened from the System Menu.

maxDPUTools Changes in Support of MIO

The maxDPUTools utility is updated to support configuration of MIO.
This includes a new Master database (Master_5.0.4F) file.

maxDPUTools I/O Cross Reference Summary

The maxDPUTools utility has been updated to provide an I/O Cross
Reference Summary Display and Report. Refer to the updated 278597
maxDPUTools Users Guide that is part of the online release manuals.

& Events Client, making it possible to view real-time alarms on the
maxVUE Alarm Summary from another system using OPC, as well as

1-6

Metso Automation 278700

include events into the event history. Refer to the updated 278615 OPC
Users Guide that is part of the online release manuals.

Release 4.4.1 Updates Details

DPUBusMap Display Changes
The DPUBusMap display incorrectly defines the return status from
either low loop A or low loop B as address 64. In the MAX1 and
MAX1000 systems this status was correctly identified as RT for Return
to High Loop. Address 64 is not a valid address for data highway token
passing. The return still occurs but the indication is incorrect. The
display has been corrected to show RT as in the MAX1 and MAX1000
systems. Please refer to Chapter 3 for special direction to correct an
already customized version of this display.

maxVUE mcsButtonControl
The capability was added to display a confirmation message before doing the
button writes. This was implemented by adding a new attribute on the
LiveData Property Window in the form of an edit box (see figure below). If
the box is blank, no write confirmation will occur. The syntax of the text
includes adding a custom text to the caption bar of the confirmation message
that is displayed. Only one confirmation is required for all the writes
configured for the button. Parameter expansion and alternate language
conversion are applied to the text.

A new right click menu item was added to allow the user to space objects
evenly on a display either in the horizontal or in the vertical direction.

Release 4.4 Updates Details

maxSTATION File Synchronization
The ability to synchronize maxSTATION files with a master set of files
has been added to Release 4.4. The File Sync Subsystem includes a File
Sync Server and associated maxFileSync user application for user
interface to the File Sync Server(s). Please refer to Manual 278724_File
Sync User's Guide for details on how to set up and use this new
functionality.
maxSTORIAN Version 2
An updated version of the maxSTORIAN is included in Release 4.4. The
interface with older Trend displays and reports has not changed, so
existing displays and reports do not need to be changed. However, the
user interface has changed in minor ways.
Existing maxSTORIAN data can be converted to the Version 2 format
for a lossless upgrade to the new package.
When upgrading to the new maxSTORIAN, you should remove all
customized versions of the maxSTORIAN status displays that are
typically found in C:\Custom\Displays\Operating\SystemStatus. These
displays are incompatible with this version of maxSTORIAN. A new set
of displays can be used as is without the need to customize them.
Note that this version of maxSTORIAN requires the MCS Resistry
machine settings entry for Default Trend Source be set on the
maxSTATION running maxSTORIAN as well as other stations that
require access to the maxSTORIAN.
Please refer to Manual 278622(Rev A4) maxSTORIAN User's Guide for
details on how to set up and use this new functionality.
maxARCHIVER Version 2

1-8

Metso Automation 278700

An updated version of the maxARCHIVER is included to be compatible

with maxSTORIAN version 2. The user interface has changed in that it
may optionally be run as a service, and run redundantly on multiple
workstations. The archive restore feature is now a separate application.
Existing maxARCHIVER data remains compatible with Version 2 for a
lossless upgrade to the new package with no conversion required.
A new maxVUE status display named maxArchiverStatus.mn has been
added to the SystemStatus display folder and added to the standard
system menu display.
Please refer to Manual 278719_maxARCHIVER User's Guide for
details.
HealthLog Alarm Severity
The HealthLog application has been enhanced to provide the ability for
the user to specify an alarm severity to the DPU is Not Responding
alarm. The default severity is 1. To change this value, add a line of the
form #S=n to your DpuList.ini file (in C:\Custom\database). The
value of n may be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Alternatively, you may specify
Option Switches of the form /S=n for Healthlog in the Startup
Configuration Utility:

If you specify Option Switches here, they will be used instead of any
value entered in DpuList.ini.
Event Collector
The Event Collector has been enhanced to preface the tagname for LSS
events from stations other than its own with the originating station name
similar to the Alarm Summary presentation of foreign LSS alarms.

Release Overview Release 4.5.1

Virtual DPU Subscription Parameters
The ability to specify SBP connection priority for a Virtual DPU has
been added. In the past subscriptions issued b a virtual DPU were all
Loop priority with a mintime of .25 seconds. This is often more than is
required in a Virtual DPU application. The new parameters allow the
user to specify the Virtual DPU SBP connection priority:

/Loop the highest priority connection with a mintime of .25 second

/Normal the next highest priority connection with a mintime of 1

second
/Background the lowest priority connection with a mintime of 4
seconds
The default connection if none is specified is /Normal.

Additional DMT Alarms

DMT alarms have been added for more maxDNA programs so that loss
of functionality can be announced to the operator. The alarms have the
following format:
_<Station Name>_<Program Name>_DMT
Alarms are issued by the Local Status Server of the Station where the
timeout was detected. The station where the alarm was generated should
be restarted to recover the lost functionality.
Sizeable Trend Wrapper
Enhancements have been made to the sizeable trend wrapper user
interface:
A Slider to easily change trend interval has been added. The tool tip
of the slider shows the current interval
The ability to add a second trend cursor to easily show the span
between two spots on the graph has been added.
The ability to move the trend cursor from the Points Group popup
has been added.
Please refer to Manual 278599 Operator User's Guide for details on
how to use this new functionality.

1-10

Metso Automation 278700

OPC Server Enhancements

Enhancements have been made to the OPC server capabilities:
The Data Access server has been updated to be OPC DA version 3.0
compliant.
A new Alarms and Events server has been added which is OPC A&E
version 1.1 compliant. Note that either the OPC server dongle or softkey
option is required to enable this feature. This is a standalone server
separate from the DA server, and may require custom DCOM
configuration for access security.
A new Historic Data Access server has been added which is OPC
HDA version 1.2 compliant. Note that maxSTORIAN version 2 is
required. Also note that either the OPC server dongle or softkey option
is required to enable this feature. Likewise this is a standalone server
separate from the DA server, and may require custom DCOM
configuration for access security.
Please refer to Manual 278607 OPC User's Guide for details on how to
use this new functionality.
maxDPUTools Enhancements
The maxDPUTools configuration tool now supports a multiple select
upload capability, where the uploading of one or more DPU can be
initiated in a single action. This same capability also exists as a standalone application program named maxDPUToolsUpload.exe in the
C:\Mcs\maxDPUTools folder, providing an easy method of performing a
complete save of the DPU running set.
Network Diagnostic Enhancements
An improved suite of network diagnostic programs has been created to
monitor network performance and detect possible problems via the
capture of network traffic and the creation of statistical summaries.
Please refer to Manual 278728 Network Diagnostic Guide for details on
how to use this new functionality.
HART 16 channel AI Module
This release provides support for the new HART 16 channel AI module
(IOP308). This module provides 16 analog current inputs with HART
communications capability for each. To use this module, insert an AIB
into your DPU configuration and set the maxPAC attribute to 16 chan
HART.

Release 4.3 Updates Details

TC Linearization
Updated TC Linearization codes have been included.
Events Subsystem Improvements
The Events Subsystem has been re-designed to remove the use of Access
MDB files. A new conversion utility is provided to transform existing
MDB files into the new storage format.
In addition the option for automatic online synchronization of the event
history between a pair of maxSTATIONs each collecting event history
independently is provided. Complementing this is a new maxVUE display
named EventSync.mn. This display provides Operational status of the
new event sync feature. This display is now accessible via a new display
swap button on the standard System Menu, referencing the bmp file
named EventSync 90x150 256clr as its faceplate image.
Optional event retrieval alternate text is also introduced as a new feature
via configuration of the EvtAltText.ini file.
Please refer to the 278716_Event Storage User's Guide in Volume 5 of
the release manuals for additional information. This manual describes the
changes in detail, along with upgrade instructions and configuration
options.
Events Automatic Archiving
The Events subsystem has been enhanced to provide optional automatic
daily archiving to DVD media, along with support for selective
restoration and playback. A softkey is required to enable the archive
feature. Please refer to the 278720_Event Archiver User's Guide in
Volume 5 of the release manuals for additional information.
maxSTORIAN Pair Lossless Failover
A maxSTORIAN pair can now failover without losing history. An option
has been added to the history configuration, per template, to use a DUAL
vs. a SINGLE subscription mode. When the DUAL option is enabled,
both the active and inactive maxSTORIANs will concurrently perform
data collection via redundant SBP subscriptions for all of the points
assigned to the selected template. Thus, upon failover, a gap in history
will not occur, as missing data due to any possible Replica update
latency writing to the inactive copy of the storage room data is
immediately corrected via a back fill operation as the former inactive
maxSTORIAN takes over. Note that this option is best reserved for use
with points originating in the model DPU4F that is running release 4.3 or
later. This DPU4F version now supports multicast subscriptions, an

Metso Automation 278700

2-17

Release Overview Release 4.5.1

optimization technique for minimizing the loading of the dual redundant
subscriptions used by the maxSTORIAN pair. Otherwise the option
should only be applied with discretion, to avoid subscription overloading
to a DPU4E, a DBM/DHW system, and/or other sources. Please refer to
the updated 278622_maxSTORIAN manual in Volume 5 of the release
manuals for additional information.
maxSTORIAN Automatic Archiving
The maxSTORIAN subsystem has been enhanced to provide optional
automatic daily archiving to DVD media, along with support for
selective restoration and playback. A softkey is required to enable the
archive feature. Please refer to the 278719_maxARCHIVER User's
Guide in Volume 5 of the release manuals for additional information.
Distributed Communications Module (DCM)
The DCM has been updated to support the Modbus Slave and Allen
Bradley protocols. A version of the DCM can also be used with the new
Serial Communication Module (SCM) I/O card to support multiple links.
Please refer to 278714 Distributed Communications Module User Guide
and 278623 maxLINKS Users Guide.
NOTE: Attribute names in the DCM atomic block in the DPU have
changed.
Conn1Qual, Conn1Name, Conn2Qual, Conn2Name,
Conn3Qual, Conn3Name have been changed to Conn01Qual,
Conn01Name,
Conn02Qual,
Conn02Name,
Conn03Qual,
Conn03Name.
Please update any displays that reference these
attributes.
Updated TimeZone.ini file
Beginning in 2007, daylight savings in the United States will begin on the
second Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday in November. The
file timezone.ini located in the folder mcs\setup\custom has been
updated to include the new dates as setup for the Eastern timezone. For
an upgrade installation this file can be used as a template for correcting
the changeover dates in the custom copy of the file located in the
custom\Sbp folder using the Wordpad editor.

Updated Adobe Reader 7.0.7

On some computers there is a long delay when opening pdf documents.
Adobe Reader 7.0.7 fixes this problem. New installations will
automatically get version 7.0.7 installed. If your WorkStation has an
earlier version of the Adobe Reader, uninstall the previous version and
install the newer version located on Disk 2 of 2 of the WorkStation
Installation CD.

Trend Bookmark mode

1-18

Metso Automation 278700

The sizeable Trend Wrapper provides an interface that allows the user to
save the current trend settings as a Bookmark. This bookmark can be
used to mark an event such as an upset. The user can move from trend to
trend without the need to relocate the point in time where the upset
occurred. Please refer to Manual 278599, the maxSTATION Operators
Guide for more information.
Multiple-Sheet Printing
The Graphical Configurator has been updated to include a Print
Configuration Sheets File menu item that allows the user to print
multiple Sheets with one print request. Please refer to Manual 278606,
the Graphical Configurator Users Guide for more information.
maxVUE Tiling
The ability to tile displays in maxVUE Runtime has been added. Use of
the tiling option is controlled by Soft Key authorization. When maxVUE
is launched, it starts up to four additional maxVUE processes that
include a Windows title bar, allowing for re-sizing, minimizing, dragging,
etc. Please refer to the 278599 maxSTATION Operators Guide for
more details.
maxVUE text alignment properties
The List Control and Text State Control have been updated to allow the
user to configure text alignment. Any value displayed by these controls
may be specified as left, center, or right aligned. The alignment defaults
to Auto to keep the behavior consistent with older versions: numbers
are right aligned and text is left aligned.
maxVUE Snapshot files
A new folder has been created for files that used by the maxVUE
Runtime Snapshot/Restore functions. The files are placed and retrieved
in the folder C:\Custom\Snapshot\<PC Name> (where <PC Name> is
the name of the maxSTATION).
maxVUE Border Scheme Property
The ability to dynamically enable/disable the Border Scheme property of
a maxVUE object has been added. Use the maxSCRIPT CtlOut
interface
(e.g.
Dim
listBorder
as
IntCtlOut
(ListBox.UseBorderScheme) to enable or disable the property for
a maxVUE object. A value of 1 will enable the property and a value of 0
will disable the property. The object must be stored and configured with
the property enabled.
Alarms Out of Service Display
A new Point Summary display to show Alarms Out of Service has been
added. Please refer to the Operator Users Guide (278599) for more
details.

Additions to MCS Registry Editor Utility
The following items have been added to the MCS Registry:
Data Entry Large Inc/Dec Value for use when changing numeric
values in maxVUE Runtime and the Point Browser.
Data Entry Small Inc/Dec Value for use when changing numeric
values in maxVUE Runtime and the Point Browser.
Graphical Configurator Show Cross References flag to specify
whether or not to show Cross References on Sheets.
Trend Bookmark Cursor Color to specify the color of the Trend
Bookmark Cursor.
Remote Client SBP Minimum Time to specify the fastest SBP
update time for Remote Terminal Server clients
Remote Client SBP Timeout Time to specify the timeout value for
SBP transaction for Remote Terminal Server clients.
For more details please refer to the Auxiliary Functions manual
(278594).
Point Browser Operator View Modes
Point Browser now has six different view modes (Operator, Engineer,
Expert, All, Inputs, and Outputs) in order to filter the information
displayed to the target user. The view mode is initialized to the current
login (Operator or Engineer) on system startup, but can changed be on
the fly. Changes to the view mode persist until the maxSTATION is
restarted. The view mode also affects what the user can see and do in the
user interface (the user cannot change the DPU mode from Active for
example). For more details please refer to the maxDPU Auxiliary
Functions manual (278605). This can be configured for custom blocks
by adding S- for Operator, E- for Engineer, X- for Expert, and A- for All
to the category as a prefix. These prefixes are mutually exclusive (only
one designation at a time). Additional prefixes of I- for Input, O- for
Output, T- for primary trend variable, U- for user defined, V- and W- are
reserved for future use by maxDNA. The IOTUVW can be combined as
a prefix along with the view mode prefix to make a prefix for the
category. The prefix entry must be caps otherwise it will be interpreted
as part of the category. These prefixes do not make unique category
entries for each different combination, only the actual category text is
considered in the count of 50 defined custom categories.
Also included in the Browser update is the ability to select the DPU by a
menu including Active, Inactive, Primary, and Secondary. When in
Operator view only the Active DPU will be available and the selection
will be grayed out. A right click menu has been added to the Left panel
of the Point Browser display. This menu includes selection of View,
DPU, Detail as Popup, Refresh Tree, and Search. The View allows the
same selections as the View pulldown menu on the right pane. The DPU
allows the same selections as the DPU pulldown menu on the right pane.
The Detail as Popup opens the selection as a new popup window.

1-20

Metso Automation 278700

Refresh Tree refreshes the tree view. Search simplifies searching the tags
by refining the tag list as you enter letters corresponding to the beginning
of the tag. You must be in the Tagnames tree to use this feature.
maxVUE Editor Toolbars
Toolbars in maxVUE Editor now retain their positioning and visibility
between instances. The first time the program is opened, the toolbars
will appear in their default positions, subsequent uses will restore the
toolbars to their last state.
This information is retained after
maxSTATION and workstation shutdown. Toolbars can be enabled or
disabled using a new option in the view menu, Toolbars, which lists the
toolbars (toolbars that are invalid in the current mode are grayed).
DPU4F Detail Displays IRIG Indicators
A change was made to the IRIG status annunciators on the DPU4F
Details and DPU4F Pair Details displays. In previous releases, the
annunciator on the inactive DPU would show IRIG Failure because the
inactive DPU does not decode the IRIG signal. That was misleading in
that there really was no failure. So, in release 4.3, the annunciator on the
inactive DPU will be blank. The annunciator on the active DPU will
continue to show the current IRIG status (IRIG OK or IRIG
Faikure). The annunciators on both DPUs will also continue to show
IRIG is not enabled when that condition exists while the DPU is
configured to be a Time Master.
Modbus, AllenBradley Libraries
Three new standard libraries can be imported into a DPU4F
configuration in maxDPUTOOLS to create serial links to PLC devices.
The libraries contain custom blocks that build protocol specific messages
that can be transmitted by a Serial Communication Module (SCM) I/O
card. The libraries are Modbus (master), AllenBradley and SCM. The
SCM library contains common functions that would be used by either
protocol. See the DPU4F Links Configuration Guide (278718) for
detailed information.

Release Overview Release 4.5.1

maxDPUTOOLS Custom Function Categories

In support of the changes to the Point Browser view options and other
purposes, to include Input vs. Output positioning in graphical
configuration views, and optional default trend attribute assignment, the
prefixing letter options of the categories assigned to custom function
attributes in designer mode have been expanded beyond just the Xexpert option. To aid in proper entry, since several prefixes are mutually
exclusive, a new dialog has been added for defining the custom
categories.
Adding or modifying a category now requires a right click operation
within the category column of the design grid, aided by a tooltip hint.
This invokes a context menu with a single entry for viewing the new
dialog labeled as Add Category. Selecting this menu entry opens the
Category dialog pictured as follows:

A text box is provided for the category text.

The View option frame determines a browser view/hiding selection.
The I/O Wiring option frame determines a graphical configuration
placement position.
The checkbox options are for other possible selections that may be
enabled as shown.

1-22

Metso Automation 278700

Note that the previous dialog is for release 4.3 and later configuration
versions. For Earlier versions, only the Expert option is allowed,
presented as a check box, and the dialog has the following presention:

Standard Function Libraries (maxDPUTOOLS)

A new category, Examples, has been added to the Standard Function
Libraries that may be imported when creating a maxDNA database.
The functions in the Examples category are intended to be used as a
training aid to help the user create new custom functions. Examples will
contain a number of useful functions that may be used as a starting point
when developing your own functions. Detailed help files for each
function explain what the function does, how it does it and how to use it.
Since these functions are intended strictly for use as demonstration
blocks, they may not have all of the functionality required for your
application nor have they been completely tested. So use them at your
own risk.
Eventually, Examples will contain a number of new functions. For this
release, we are starting it off with a single function (SnsrFailDetector)
that uses the standard deviation of a sensors signal to determine if the
sensor has failed. In conjunction with this function block, a new Control
Popup display for it.
Refer to the function block help files within maxDPUTOOLS for more
detailed information.

numeric values in events. The text is has more meaning to the user
than a numeric value.

SBP Limiter Atom

This release adds the SBP Limiter Atom to the set of built-in max DPU4F
atoms. The SBP Limiter is used to prevent an excessive number of
subscriptions from impairing the functionality of the DPU. Symptoms of
subscription overloading include maxVUE display striping, slow screen
updates (data appears to be frozen), slow response time for PointBrowser data
updates and tooltip error messages such as Can not allocate buffer and SBP
Timeout.
The SBP Limiter atom can also

Protect against 1 or more stations hogging all of the communications

and DPU bandwidth

Preserve DPU Peer-to-Peer bandwidth

Add DPU security by preventing a rogue station or program from

sucking up DPU bandwidth

In addition to restricting subscriptions, the SBPLimiter atom can also generate

an alarm as each of the subscription limits is neared.
Both the restriction level (called a HardLimit) and the alarm limit (called a
HiLimit) for each type of limit can be configured in the SBPLimiter atom.
The types of limits are described in the following section.
Total Number of Incoming Subscriptions to a DPU limits the total to a
number that can be handled by the DPU under any loading conditions
Limits by connection priority loop (high), normal (medium), and
background (low) insures that a lower priority connection cannot consume
all available bandwidth preventing higher priorities from being serviced. Each
program on the Software Back Plane has one or more connections. By limiting
connection subscriptions, more bandwidth can be offered to higher priority
connections (such as maxVUE) than lower priority connections (such as
maxSTORIAN).

1-28

Metso Automation 278700

Limits by station limits the number of subscriptions from any single station
to the DPU.
There are also a few restrictions on outgoing traffic:
Limit to number of outgoing references a restriction on the total traffic (peerpeer) that can be generated by a single DPU
Limit to number of unoptimized subscriptions a logical connection between
internal objects in a DPU that take work each time the block is executed. In
an optimized subscription, the destination object directly accesses the source of
data. An unoptimized subscription is access to data that is not stored, but that
must be computed each time it is accessed.
All limits can be set in maxTOOLS using object \system\SBPLimit. There are
usable defaults for each parameter. There is a new master database for
maxTOOLS that is required for editing limits (alarms) and hard limits.
However, it is strongly recommended that the user not change the default hard
limits. The default hard limits permit a high level of system functionality
without overburdening the DPU with subscriptions. Increasing the hard limits
risks causing DPU problems. Only increase a default hard limit as a last
resort. It is far better to go to the sources of the subscriptions and reduce their
need for them than to raise the limits and put more burden on the DPU.

In addition to providing limits and alarms, the SBP Limiter atom also provides
statistics to indicate who the top (highest) users of subscriptions to the DPU
are. This information is useful because knowing who is using the most
subscriptions is the first step in reducing the number of subscriptions.
The SBPLimit atom's configurable parameters are:
HiLimTotalSub

Specifies the High Alarm value for total external incoming

subscriptions processed by a DPU.

HardLimTotalSub

Default Value 8000 - The DPU may be stressed at this limit.

Specifies the Hard limit value at which any new subscription will be
rejected.

Specifies the High Alarm value for subscriptions from any particular
station (DPU or maxSTATION).

HardLimStnSub

Default Value 4000 - No station should consume more than half the
capacity of the DPU.
Specifies the Hard limit value for subscriptions from any particular
station (DPU or maxSTATION). Above this level any new subscription
from that station will be rejected.
Default Value 5000 - No station should consume more than half the

Release 4.1 Updates Details

Multi Monitor maxSTATION
1. Up to 4 monitors can be connected to a single computer and operated
with a single mouse and keyboard. Each monitor displays a separate
maxVUE instance. This feature requires a 4 port video card and a
special license.

New maxSTORIAN Status Display

1. The maxSTORIAN status display shows information that would be
displayed on the applications dialog. The application dialog is not
available when maxSTORIAN is run as a service.

Vertical Toolbar Tracker Point

1. Configurable database that tracks key points and not affected by
display call-up.

Trending improvements
1. A new stretchable, mult-instance trend wrapper. See manual 278599
for additional information.

Alarm List/Summary improvements

1. The Grid used by the Alarm List and Alarm Summary has been
replace with one that resizes.

1-32

Metso Automation 278700

2. In addition to the resizing, this grid outlines the tagname field when it
is the selected point.
Note: the new grid does not use the configured Font point size, but sizes
text to fit the number of rows in the grid. It may be necessary to change
the number of rows (or control height) in the Alarm List/Summary to
achieve the same Font point size as before this change.

Updates to maxDPU4F Detail Displays

1. A display field that shows Function Block Execution Time was added
to the DPU4F Detail display. Function Block Execution Time is a
measure of DPU loading.

Updates to maxDPU4E Detail Displays

1. A new display field shows Function Block Execution Time. This
provides an indication of DPU loading.
2. Another new display field shows Fatal Error Reason. Normally,
this field shows NA (Not Applicable). However, if the DPU
detects a serious problem, it will, if possible, display the reason in
this field.
3. A new button was added to the display. Network View calls up a
display that shows how this DPU sees the Control Room Network.
This can be a valuable tool for use in troubleshooting network
problems.

Key Programs Run as Services

1. maxSTATION programs can be configured to run as services so that
they continue to run even if the user logs off. For example, an event
collector would continue to save events even if the operator or
engineer logged off.

Graphical Configurator Drawing Changes

3. When drawing connection lines in off-line mode or for printing,
boolean lines are drawn as a dotted line. Analog lines are still drawn
as a solid line.
4. When drawing connection lines in run-time, color is used to denote
the type of connection (not data quality):

Solid black for ananlog connections

Thin False color for active boolean connections

Thick True color for inactive boolean connections

5. In addition to showing Input values when in run-time mode, analog

output values are now shown.
6.

Please refer to the 278606 Graphical Contigurator Users Guide for

more details.

Release Overview Release 4.5.1

New Startup Configuration
1. A new configuration program has been provided that elliminates the
need to edit most startup configuration INI files. In fact, the old
MCS and Custom startup.ini files are no longer used. The Startup
Configuration program is available only if logged on as administator.
Note that the DPUlist.ini and Simdpulist.ini must still be manually
edited. TimeZone.ini and EvtLogger.ini may also have to be edited.

Network Printing re-work

1. Starting with Release 4.0.3, the printing of Events no longer uses the
Windows interface to print over the network. Instead, the Software
Backplane is used to send events to the PC that a printer is attached
to.
2. In order to make use of this feature, it is required that the user
rename any printers (defined before Release 4.0.3) to be used for
event printing. The new name must start with the 5 characters
_LOG_ and the printer must be shared. These characters may be
pre-pended to the existing printer name. Use the Windows Printers
and Faxes utility to rename and share an existing printer. (Right
click on the desired printer and select the Rename menu item).
3. Any printers defined for logging use before Release 4.0.3 will have
Registry entries for the old printer names. These must be cleared and
re-defined before using the printer for event logging. You may either
use the MCSRegEdit tool to rename these printers to match the name
you configured from the Windows Printers and Faxes utility (and
then restart your station), or you may use the Network Printing
display to clear old assignments and define new assignments. Old
printer names will result in alarms until the printer names with
_LOG_ are in use.

maxDPU4F
1. New form includes a faster (300Mhz) processor and more memory.
2. Complete identity is contained on compact flash. The compact flash
contains executables for the bios, CP, IOM, FPGAs and the dpu
database saved in mxt form. Software upgrades are accomplished
simply by plugging in a new compact flash. The DPU4F will
automatically load the new images. The compact flash can be
upgraded when plugged into a media writer at the workstation or
over the network when plugged into a DPU4F.
3. Critical time class has been improved from 20 milliseconds to a 10
millisecond maximum. The default is still 40.
4. Improved network security. DPU4F will only accept network
messages from an approved station. Network messages are filtered
at the ethernet driver level reducing the load on upper level
programs.
5. DPU4F does not use batteries. No longer a maintenance issue.
6. DPU4F does not need a processor cooling fan.
1-34

Metso Automation 278700

7. Monitors its own temperature. An alarm is generated should a limit

be exceeded.
8. ATAG, DTAG, and AlmRep have return to normal alarm severity as
0 to 5. 0 is use the same priority as its Alarm Severity and 1 to 5 is
its new priority if it generates an alarm on return to normal.
9. ATAG, DTAG, AlmRep, and all buffers have an eneumerated Defeat
for alarms. A 0 does not defeat the alarm while a non-zero value
does. The value is the security level of the login at the station
defeating the alarm, except if the defeat is from priority level 9 when
the level of defeat as chosen by the security level 9 person can set the
level to any other level as indicated by 11 through 19.

Distributed Communication Module (DCM)

1. An alternate form of the DPU4F that supports a serial link to
MODBUS PLCs.
2. All atomic blocks except for buffers can be configured. See manual
278714 for more details.

Release 4.0.2 Update Details

New TimeZone.ini File
1. This is a new text file that must be updated if your system includes
the automatic adjustment for daylight savings time. The file is in
c:\Custom\Sbp with self-contained detailed instructions.
2. The file defines the applicable timezone differences from GMT for
standard and daylight savings, the date and time of two
daylightsavings transitions per year, and which transition starts the
DST.

Enabling Non-Uniform Automatic Daylight Savings

This release includes support for the enabling of automatic daylight
savings for timezones not enabled as such in Windows, (notably the
Jerusalem timezone). To enable this feature, the user must simply
configure the C:\Custom\SBP\Timezone.ini file. If future transitions
cannot yet be determined (i.e., Jerusalem timezone), this file must be
maintained in a timely manner prior to the occurrence of the next
transition, and also include an approximate entry for the transition that
occurs after the next. Furthermore, the Timezone.INI must be updated
identically on all maxDNA workstations.

maxDPUTOOLS Incremental Download Improvements

Improvements to incremental download have been included supporting
the downloading of new and modified custom function blocks. Refer to
1-36

Metso Automation 278700

the document 278597_Incremental Download Improvements.doc

included in the manual additions folder, as a supplement to the 278597
maxDPUTools Users manual describing the changes.

Release 4.0.3 Updates Details

Improved Support for Propagation of Local alarms
There are a number of alarms that are specific to the operation of a
maxSTATION such as a _disk alarm indicating some portion of the disk
is exceeding specified limits. These alarms have been primarily
presented on the alarm list and summary of the station detecting the fault.
This is not desirable where there is an unattended station (such as a
maxLINKS or maxSTORIAN) which needs to be monitored.
It is possible to point the alarm merge program of a central station (such
as an engineering station) to all local alarms through edit of
C:\custom\Sbp\mergealm.ini:

The PROVIDER = [172.16.160.64] connects to the local status alarms

(_lss) of that station. Repeat this line for each station from which you
want to gather alarms.

Local Alarm Identification

The main functional change is to add [station name] to the alarm before
presentation on the alarm list or alarm summary to distinguish the source
of the alarm. This also serves to make the alarm acknowledge function
from workstation to workstation. The alarm summary may look as
follows:

Metso Automation 278700

2-37

Release Overview Release 4.5.1

In the above example the station named DIONYSIS has reported 5

alarms that would have previously only been available on the local
console.

Updated Health Log Status Display

The Health Log Display has been enhanced to provide a visual indication
of cable breaks via animated icons and additional text status fields, as
well as providing status attributes available via the SBP. Below is a
pictorial example:

In the above example the sections labeled Ethernet Cable Breaks and
Alarms and Status at the top of the display have been added. As shown
no cable breaks are present as indicated by Good status for each list
entry as a Yellow Smile icon and as text in the Transaction status column
(labeled TransStat). Within the Ethernet Cable Breaks section, the two
icons representing the A and B network status are shown with a
green background color, and cable break counts of zero appearing below

1-38

Metso Automation 278700

the icon. Within the Alarms and Status section, the checkboxes
indicating a Cable Break (labeled CabBreak) and No Communication
(labeled NoComm) are both clear, and the Alarm Text box indicates
Cleared. Note these statuses are accessible on the SBP as attributes
CabBreak, NoComm, and Alarm_Text of the service named
_HealthLog.
Below is the next pictorial example with a cable break present:

In the above second example a cable break has occurred on network A

(a cable was disconnected from 4CCS09 primary) as well as a station
becoming unreachable (4CCS09 secondary was momentarily reset). Note
the changes in the top section as well as in the list. Within the Ethernet
Cable Breaks section, the icon representing the A network status has
changed to a red blinking background color, and a cable break count of
one appears below it. Within the Alarms and Status section, both
checkboxes are checked indicating both a cable break and a no
communication problem are present, along with associated alarm text.
Within the list a cable break icon appears within the entry for 4CCS09,
as well as alarm status text.

Metso Automation 278700

2-39

Release Overview Release 4.5.1

Lastly, what is the Accept Breaks command button used for? Below is
another example that is the result of selecting Accept Breaks with a

cable break present:

In the above third example, after selecting the accept breaks button, note
that cable break icons have changed from Blinking red to a cyan
background color, and the alarm status has been cleared. The action of
the accept button was to defeat the alarm status. It should also be noted
that upon the clearing of any cable breaks for a station, that the accept
button should once again be selected to re-enable the alarm triggering for
that station.

Updated DPU4E I/O Status Display

The I/O Status Display has been enhanced to provide an improved visual
indication of the status of each individual buffer to include offscan and/or
simulation state. This is accomplished by the use of enhanced picture
icons in the leading Address field column of the list. Note that a reference
key section to the various icons used is provided at the bottom of the
display. Below is a pictorial example for demonstation purposes:

Default Report Printer
1. In Release 4.0.5 the History Report subsystem has been upgraded to
allow the operator to specify a default report printer.
2. This default report printer is remembered on station restart as well as
when the Report Control Panel is re-started.

maxSTORIAN new Registry entries

1. MaxStorian parameters that were previously entered manually in
various INI files have been set up as registry entries.
2. The default values may be changed via the MCS Registry Entry tool.
Refer to the picture below.

DPU4F
1. The DPU has been corrected to reject duplicat HID and/or Relative
IDX entries in a configuration during download. A configuration with
duplicate HID texts, which would previously have downloaded, will
now fail during the Commit phase (see below).
2. The maxDPUTools utility should be used to detect and correct these
duplicates and the DPU re-downloaded. Use the File Duplicate
Names menu item. Note that the problem HID is also shown in the
maxDPUTools error log.

Border scheme corruption Release 4.5.1

It is possible for the maxVUE Border Scheme Database to become
corrupt, especially when there have been a large number of schemes
added to the database. The corruption is manifested by the expression
lines being stored out of order. Please read the document Update
Corrupted Border Scheme Database.pdf in the _Release 4.5 Manual
Additions folder in maxDOCS for corrective instructions.

System Menu Display Release 4.0.5

The System Menu display was changed to correct incorrect tool tips on
some buttons.
The System Menu display (SystemMenu.mn) is a user customizable
display. The user must copy the Metso standard display from the MCS
folder, customize it as desired and then save it in the Custom folder.
The updates made to SystemMenu.mn were ONLY made to the standard
copy in the MCS folder. It is the users responsibility to update his/her
custom display. The following instructions assume that the user knows
how to operate the maxVUE editor.
The update should be done as follows.

c:\mcs\displays\mn\SystemMenu\SystemMenu.mn.

corresponding buttons from the standard display in the MCS folder.
Report Control Panel
maxSTORIAN Status

Time Set
Save the custom display that you just updated.
Close the displays and the maxVUE Editor. This concludes the
upgrade procedure for SystemMenu.mn.

DPU Bus Map Display Release 4.4.1

The DPU Bus Map displays were modified to show return status from
low loop A or low loop B as RT (for Return to High Loop) as was
done on the MAX1 and MAX1000 versions of this display.
The template versions of DPUBus1Map and DPUBus2Map displays
must be customized for a specific system. To do this the DPUBusMap
folder in C:\Mcs would have been copied to the
C:\Custom\Displays\Operation folder.
Only the DPU Bus DPU Station Group has been modified. If your
customized version of the displays uses this group, follow the directions
below to update your display.
1. In the maxVUE Editor, open the standard display
c:\mcs\displays\mn\DPUBusMap\DPUBus1Map.mn.
2. Also open the custom display c:\custom\displays\operating\
DPUBusMap\DPUBus1Map.mn.
3. Select and Copy one of the DPU Bus DPU Station groups from
the standard display and Paste it onto your custom display.
4. Select one of your customized DPU Bus DPU Station groups and
click the right mouse button. From the menu items select Copy
Parameters.
5. Select the newly pasted group from the standard display and click the
right mouse button. From the menu items select Paste Parameters
6. Select your original group and click the right mouse button. From
the menu items select Properties. Note the X, Y, Width and Height
parameters, and then delete this group.
7. Select the new group and click the right mouse button. From the
