Havana, Cuba:
ife in Cuba grinded to a somber standstill as it people paused to pay
respects to the late Fidel Castro, the country's former leader who dominated the island nation for decades. He was 90.
The national nine-day mourning period began Saturday, Nov. 26 as the nation woke up to the news that the man who had long been the face of their
nation was gone.
Castro died a day earlier and his brother and current leader, Raul
Castro, announced his death in a televised statement. "I say to the people
of Cuba, with profound pain I come here to inform our people, our
friends of America and the world, that today, 25 November, 2016, at
10:29 pm, died the chief commander of the Cuban revolution, Fidel
Castro Ruz," Raul Castro said.
All activities and public performances were stopped and the
flag flown at half-staff in public and military establishments.
Radio and television have been broadcasting patriotic
and historical programming, state news outlet Granma
reported. Continued on page 5

Fidel Castros Legacy:

Good, Bad and Ugly!

hile millions of people all over the world

are mourning the death of
Fidel Castro, the Cuban
politician and revolutionary
leader who governed the Republic of Cuba for 47 years,
there are perhaps an equal
number of people rejoicing
his demise.

We want to observe the old

expression, Do not say bad
things about those who have
died, but Castro has been described as a wicked tyrant who
punished, imprisoned and killed
thousands of Cubans who did
not comply with his socialist indoctrination.
Civil liberties were hardpressed as labor unions lost the
right to strike, independent
newspapers were shut down
and religious institutions harassed.

Castro removed opposition

to his rule through executions
and imprisonments, as well as
through forced emigration.
It is estimated that tens of
thousands were murdered, with
a documented 5,600 killed by
firing squads alone. In addition,
state forces killed more Cubans
when they tried to flee the
country.
Nevertheless, it was not all
dreadful as Castro's regime has
been credited with opening
10,000 new schools and increasing literacy to 98 percent.
Cubans enjoy a universal
health-care system, which has
decreased infant mortality to 11
deaths in 1,000.
Castro took care of the
poor and under privileged
Cubans -- as long as they did
not pose any threat or opposition to his style of governance.

patrick@streethype.net

However, in the eyes of

foreigners, the former Cuban
leader was a very good and
charitable friend of several third
world countries, including Jamaica.

While facing its own challenges and economic blockade

from the United States, Cuba
was able to provide free medical assistance, including the
training of doctors to satisfy the
medical needs of those countries.
Fidel Castro is gone but his
legacy will not be forgotten.
We are imploring Cuban
President Raul Castro that in
protecting his brothers legacy,
this generation of Cuban citizens will not tolerate injustices,
as well as the suppression of
free speech and democracy
which has been the norm in
Cuba for almost a half century.
The Cuban leader should
continue to feed, educate and
protect the people, but it must
stop the suppression of its political opponents.

Some employers view training as a waste of time for employees who would be doing
their work for the organization

Employers finding training

Livery Company
Fined for Soliciting
Good Reviews with
Rider Discount

NEW YORK, NY:

major livery cab company in the city
has been hit with a $75,000 fine for offering customers discounts for good reviews.
The office of State Attorney General
Eric Schneiderman found that between May
and June of this year, Carmel Car and Limousine sent more than 160,000 emails to
customers asking for feedback on recent
rides.
If they said the ride was "perfect" or
"good," they would be sent to a website that
offered ten dollars off their next trip if they
posted a positive review on sites like Yelp.
They would not get the offer if they
said the ride was "bad."
Schneiderman says Carmel cooperated
with the investigation as a way to bring attention to unlawful business incentives.
A Carmel spokeswoman says the company made an "honest mistake" in its marketing.

Fidel Castro

Continued from page 1

Granma reported the following time
frame of events during the days of mourning: Cubans were to pay their respects
throughout the country at different memorials on Monday (Nov. 28) and Tuesday
(Nov. 29). A public mass was held in the
Jose Marti Revolution Square in Havana on
Tuesday evening (Nov. 29).
Fidel Castro's body was cremated and
on Wednesday (Nov.3), his ashes were
taken along the reverse route he took across
the island after seizing power in 1959.
In 2006, after several health challenges, Fidel transferred his responsibilities
to Vice-President Ral Castro, who formally assumed the presidency in 2008.
Fidel Castro was a controversial and
divisive world figure. He was decorated
with various international awards, and his
supporters laud him as a champion of socialism, anti-imperialism, and humanitarianism, whose revolutionary regime secured
Cubas independence from American imperialism.
Conversely, critics view him as a totalitarian dictator whose administration oversaw multiple human-rights abuses, an
exodus of more than one million Cubans,
and the impoverishment of the countrys
economy. Castro is survived by nine children.

Jamaican on FBI to Most Wanted List

M

CNN, Los Angeles:

arlon Jones, a member of a Jamaican
narcotics ring, who is accused of fatally shooting four people in Los Angeles,
was recently added to the FBI list of Ten
Most Wanted Fugitives.
"Jones has violent tendencies and may
attempt to flee internationally," the FBI said.
" He has ties to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, Tennessee, the Virgin
Islands and Jamaica."
Los Angeles police said the shooting
happened late in the night of October 15 in
a house that contains a Jamaican restaurant
a few blocks south of the Santa Monica
Freeway, near the Crenshaw neighborhood.
Jones attended a rival gang's celebration, where he shot someone in the head, the
FBI said.
Other people started shooting and the
violence ended with four people dead and at
least 10 wounded, the FBI said.
Los Angeles authorities charged Jones
with four counts of murder. Federal authorities charged him with unlawful flight to
avoid prosecution.

Investigators said they think Jones was

born in Jamaica and was in the United States
illegally. He has given different birth dates,
ranging from 1975 to 1981, and various
places of birth, ranging from the Virgin Islands to Wisconsin.
A reward of $100,000 has been offered
for information leading to his arrest. Jones
is described as black, 5-foot-9 or 5-foot-10
and 160-170 pounds.
Some of his aliases are Rasheen Brantley, Floyd Evans, Floyd Evans Jr., Anthony
Howard, Philip L. Schepacarter, Anthony
Winter, Anthony Wynter and "Junior," the
FBI said.
The FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives
list has been in existence since 1950, the FBI
says in an FAQ about the list. The Criminal
Investigative Division at FBI headquarters
seeks nominations from the agency's 56 field
offices. The CID agents and the agency office of public affairs review the names and
the FBI's executive management gives final
approval.

Brooklyn Man Convicted

of Murdering His Mom

BROOKLYN
31-year-old East New York, Brooklyn
man has been found guilty of seconddegree murder for killing his mother before
a meeting with the Brooklyn District Attorneys Office regarding a crime the defendant
allegedly committed against a relative.
Apollo Hernandez, 31, was convicted
on Nov 28 of second-degree murder following a jury trial before Brooklyn Supreme
Court Justice Neil Firetog. He is scheduled
to be sentenced on December 19, 2016 at
which time he faces up to 25 years to life in
prison.
Acting District Attorney Gonzalez said
that, according to trial testimony, on December 17, 2014, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the
victim, Ruth Maceira, 48, was home alone
when the defendant, her eldest son, arrived
at her Bushwick apartment. At approximately 10 p.m., the defendant repeatedly
beat his mother with a metal statue and used
a kitchen knife to slit her throat. As he fled,
the defendant left a trail of bloody footprints,
including sneaker treads, leading from the
victims fourth floor apartment to the front
door of the building, according to the evidence.
On December 20, 2014 emergency personnel were called to the victims apartment
by a concerned relative who was unable to
reach the victim. According to testimony and
text messages, the victim was planning to
confront the defendant regarding allegations
that the defendant committed a felony offense against a younger family member, a
crime that was disclosed by the younger family member earlier that year. The victim was
also scheduled to meet with Brooklyn prosecutors about that matter the week following
the attack.
The victim died as a result of an incised
wound to the neck, according to the Medical
Examiner.

PARAMARIBO, Suriname:

Congresswoman
hails UN apology
for cholera epidemic
in Haiti

aribbean American congresswoman

Yvette D Clarke has welcomed the United
Nations apology to the Haitian people over the
cholera outbreak in the French-speaking
Caribbean country.
United Nations Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon issued the apology earlier this week
for the cholera epidemic that has killed more
than 10,000 people in Haiti.
Although the secretary general refused
to explicitly admit fault for introducing
cholera to Haiti, the United Nations Special
Rapporteur on Human Rights and Extreme
Poverty has clearly stated that cholera was introduced to Haiti by United Nations aid workers, said Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican
immigrants.
The representative for the predominantly
Caribbean 9th Congressional District in
Brooklyn said she agreed with the preponderance of scientific evidence that supports this
conclusion.
Now, the United Nations has a responsibility to deploy the hundreds of millions of
dollars that have been pledged to address the
threat of disease, lack of food security and
need for development, as well as compensating families afflicted by cholera and restoring
communities that have been devastated,
Clarke said.
She, therefore, urged the entire international community to become involved in this
effort, stating that she will continue to work
with her colleagues in the United States Congress to fight for active American involvement in this important mission".

Rihanna meets Prince Harry:

The visiting Prince Harry looks delighted to be introduced to the songstress at an event
marking 50 years of Barbados' independence on Wednesday on Barbados. Harry subsequently took to the stage to deliver a message from the Queen congratulating Barbados on
their anniversary. The Prince says 'Our countries have a shared history, shared values and
an affection which continues to bind us.' Keen not to miss out on the festivities, the Queen
herself sent out a tweet from the Royal Family's official Twitter account which read: 'On
this day of celebration, I send my congratulations to you on your Golden Jubilee of Independence.'

Five Caribbean Countries

With The Most HIV Cases

News Americas:
s many again paused to mark World AIDS
Day 2016, the question in the Caribbean
remains which countries have the highest number of HIV cases? Here are the top 5 according
to UNAIDS data obtained by NAN:
1: Haiti
The French Caribbean country of Haiti leads
the region with the most HIV cases. According
to the latest reported numbers obtained by NAN
from UNAIDS, Haiti had a whopping 130,000
cases as of last year. The country also has the
most number of AIDS-related deaths at 8,000,
according to latest numbers.
2: Dominican Republic
The Caribbean country with the second most reported HIV cases is the Dominican Republic.
UNAIDS data as of 2015 show there are 68,000
people living with HIV there. The DR also has
the second highest number of AIDS-related fatalities at a reported 3,100.
3: Jamaica
The English-speaking Caribbean nation of Jamaica comes in at third on the HIV Top Five
List. There are some 29,000 Jamaicans currently living with the HIV virus, UNAIDS data
shows. The country is also third overall for the
highest number of AIDS fatalities with 1,200.
4: Cuba
Currently, there are 22,000 reported instances
of HIV on the island, the fourth largest in the
Caribbean according to UNAIDS data. The
country also has the highest number of reported
new HIV cases at 3,100 as of 2015 and leads
with the most adults living on anti-retroviral
drugs. Five hundred Cuban died from AIDS-related deaths as of 2015.
5: Trinidad & Tobago
Rounding out the top five list is the twin island
Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. Some 11,000
people were reported as living with HIV on the
island as of 2015 while 500 reportedly died
from AIDS related deaths and another 500 were
counted as recently contacting the HIV virus.
However, the country is second in the region
behind Cuba for the islands regionally with the
most people living on anti-retroviral drugs because of HIV. Early HIV testing and treatment
can be game-changers as well, Dr. Cesar

Nuez, UNAIDS Latin America and Caribbean

Regional Support Team Director said last
Thursday.

WASHINGTON, USA -n Monday, the United States Supreme

Court denied the petition for a writ of
certiorari filed by Allen Stanford, whose prior
District Court conviction and sentence was
affirmed by the Fifth Circuit.
Stanford's best opportunity to revisit his
criminal case has failed; any post-conviction
relief that he seeks in the future is entirely
discretionary with the District Court, and
generally has a poor chance of success.
Stanford's presumptive release date is
April 17, 2105, meaning that he will spend
the rest of his life in custody; this may not
satisfy his many victims, but it does more or
less close the chapter on his criminal prosecution.
His Antigua and Barbuda-based Stanford International Bank left victims strewn all
over the Western Hemisphere, and the Ponzi
scheme Stanford operated cost many Americans their life savings.
A sentence, such as the one in this case,
which exceeds the life expectancy of a major
Ponzi schemer, though stiff, could serve to
deter future potential Ponzis from engaging
in this type of criminal conduct.

Immigration And Intimate Partner/Domestic Violence

y abusive spouse is a U.S. citizen/lawful permanent resident and is threatening me about

my immigration status. Is there
anything I can do about my immigration status?

Under U.S. immigration law, a U.S. citizen

(USC) or lawful permanent resident (LPR)
generally controls the immigration process
(green card application) for his/her spouse
and children. However, Congress passed
legislation known as the Violence Against
Women Act (VAWA) to prevent abusive
spouses from using their control over the
immigration process to further intimidate
survivors of domestic/intimate partner violence. This law allows survivors and their
children to self-petition for their green
cards with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) without the consent or participation of their spouse. USCIS
must keep the entire self-petition process
confidential from the abusive spouse.

years. My spouse is threatening not
to help me remove the conditions
on my green card. What can I do?

If your spouse is refusing to help you remove the conditions on your green card,
you can apply to remove them on your own
without your spouses cooperation.

This type of petition is known as a battered spouse waiver and can be filed at any
time before or, in many circumstances,
even after the two-year conditional resident
period. You must show that your marriage
was in good faith and that you were subjected to battery or extreme cruelty during
the marriage.

A person may be eligible for a self-petition

if s/he meets the following requirements:
S/he is currently legally married to a USC
or LPR or s/he was the spouse of a USC or
LPR within the last two years and the
spouse lost status due to an incident of domestic violence (where the spouse was deported) or s/he divorced their USC or LPR
spouse not more than two years ago and
there is a connection between the divorce
and the domestic violence
S/he entered into the marriage in good
faith, meaning that the marriage was not
entered into solely for immigration purposes;
S/he resided with the abusive spouse;
S/he is a person of good moral character;

Young Windies open Super50,

World Cup preparation
W
ST JOHNS, Antigua:
est Indies Under-19s will gather in
Grenada next week to begin preparation for the Regional Super50 which bowls off
next January.
A 20-member preliminary squad will undergo training from December 9-20, and will
also receive physical assessment along with
life skill sessions and mental preparation.
A management team, led by head coach
Graeme West and comprising Dwain Gill, Anthony Gray, Khevyn Williams and Zephyrinus
Nicholas, will oversee the camp.
This initial camp is to prepare a team for
the Regional Super50 as was done the last two
years and we will also have a pre-tournament
camp for the final team [from] January 1721, said West Indies Cricket Board project
officer, Rawl Lewis.

The Under-19s will do battle in Group A

of the Super50 which runs from January 24 to
February 18 in Antigua and Barbados.
Title-holders Trinidad & Tobago Red
Force, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, Windward Islands Volcanoes and visiting English
County, Kent Spitfires, have also been installed in Group A.
Group B, meanwhile, comprises last year
losing finalists Barbados Pride, Guyana
Jaguars, Combined Campuses and Colleges
Marooners, Jamaica Scorpions and ICC
Americas.
The tournament will serve as a part of the
build-up for the Under-19s as they ready
themselves for the defence of their ICC Youth
World Cup title captured earlier this year in
Bangladesh. However, Lewis said the
Super50 was only a smart part of the intended
preparation for the squad.

Sean Paul hailed by Forbes magazine

ne of Jamaicas most popular entertainers, Sean Paul, has received commendations from internationally renowned Forbes
Magazine as one of the most surprising stories of 2016 in the music world.
According to reports the magazine in an
article of the 44-year-old Jamaican Grammyawarded singer, described as the pretty boy
of Jamaican music, Pauls career is booming because of either of two factors.
First, an expertly curated strategy on
the part of his management, his record label,
and himself, or secondly, Paul just happened
to work with the right artistes at the right
time.
The year 2016 has been a great year for
Sean Paul, He was featured on British singer
Sias Cheap Thrills which climbed to number
one of the on the US record charts. He also
was featured on the Rockabye by the British
group which was a number one hit in the UK
this year.

SEAN PAUL

Gets commendations Forbes Magazine

Forbes magazine stated that While

these songs arent making Sean Pauls name,
they are helping to resuscitate his career, as

well as to introduce him to a new, younger

generation that might not know his own
works very well.
Paul also signed a recording deal with
Island Records UK in August and has just released two new songs, No Lie (with Dua
Lipa) and Tek Weh Yuh Heart, which features Tory Lanez.
Hes one of the very few reggae greats
to have gone global. What Sean has done for
Jamaica and helping reggae music cross over
makes him nothing short of a cultural icon,
Darcus Beese, president of Island Records
UK told Billboard.
Paul first broke through on the internationally scene in 2002 with the album Dutty
Rock featuring hits like Gimmie The Light,
Like Gule and Get Busy.
In 2006 Paul made it to the Billboard top
ten with is hits Temperature and (When You
Gonna) Give It Up To Me.

Scores Turn Out for 'Reeewind to Rocksteady'

By Flair Lindsey
Contributed Writer
New York, NY:
t was quite a celebratory weekend in New
York City over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Adding to the annual Holiday merriness and
bliss was a spectacular concert that attracted
scores of Reggae music lovers to the posh Resorts World Casino in Queens.
Billed as "Reeewind to Rocksteady," a
50th Anniversary celebration of Rocksteady,
Reggae's prized predecessor, the Irish and
Chin produced event featured performances
by showstoppers Freddie McGregor, Marcia
Griffiths and music from pioneer DJ David
Rodigan and notorious selector Ninja Crown
of the Mighty Crown sound system. The
wildly popular Code Red band backed the
artists.
"We couldn't be happier with 'Reeewind
to Rocksteady'...it was everything we imagined and more," says Garfield "Chin" Bourne
of Irish and Chin. "Dedicated to highlighting
vintage Reggae and Dancehall entertainment
and sound system culture, 'Reeewind' has become one of our most successful annual
events...we are already crafting our 2017 staging. Great loyal supporters, combined with
committed professional entertainers, made
this year's event a pleasurable experience."
Hours before show time, crowds poured
into the casino. With music and nostalgia on
their minds, the music lovers came dressed in
their finest attire, all set to skank and "cool
and deadly" the night away. There was also
some bubbling going on as Ninja Crown
kicked off the night with impressive dosages
of Lover's Rock and 80's and 90's Dancehall.
Infectious Dancehall riddims overtook the
swollen crowd, who danced effortlessly, while
indulging in libations.
Both Marcia Griffiths and Freddie McGregor boast illustrious careers, which span
every modern era of Jamaican music. As both
have a stock of music and plentiful investment in the genre of Rocksteady, they were a
perfect fit for "Reeewind to Rocksteady."
Throw in their chemistry and you have a
bonafide show. Irish and Chin was thrilled
about "Reeewind to Rocksteady," describing
it as the ultimate way to close out the year.

Jamaican Scammer pleads guilty

he promise of a big pay day $2.5 million and a new Mercedes Benz proved
too rich to resist.
It also proved costly for the 71-year old

Corey Buddle, 25, of Brooklyn and a native of Jamaica, admitted Monday to orchestrating a lottery fraud that targeted senior

Buddle, as part of his plea agreement, admitted cheating four victims out of a total of

Allen said Buddle and others involved in
the conspiracy enticed their victims with
fraudulent notices informing them of their
prizes and directing them to "pre-pay" taxes

One victim from Missouri sent Buddle
$200,650 in cash, while the victim from Western New York sent him $130,000 in order to

3 Ways to Get Resourceful with Gift Wrapping

12 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER DEC 1-18, 2016

FAMILY FEATURES:
fter spending hours searching for the perfect gift, its only
fitting that the wrapping is just as special as the gift itself.
Luckily, elaborate wrapping doesnt have to be pricey you can
easily find ways to perfect and personalize your gift with what
you have left over from last year and everyday items around the
house.
1. Use whats around you. You dont have to buy fancy, expensive wrapping paper to make a gift special. Use household
items like newspapers, paper bags and even magazines for unconventionally wrapped gifts that still give off a wow-factor. If you
have extra bakers twine, use it to create a shabby-chic bow and
adorn the present with a small sprig from your Christmas tree.
These household items can give gifts a handmade and homey
touch that friends and family will love.

2. Dont let anything go

to waste. Get the most out of
gift wrapping by using every
last bit of your supplies. If
youre at the end of two rolls of
different wrapping paper, use
the scraps to create a perfectly
mismatched present by covering 2/3 of the gift with one
paper and the remainder with
the other. Use Scotch GiftWrap Tape where both papers meet to
create a seam that blends flawlessly into the wrapping paper and
top with a bow. If you have leftover birthday paper, using it for a
holiday gift is no problem. Flip the paper inside out to use the
white side, then simply adorn the gift with decorative tapes to add
pizazz, texture and dimension.

3. Accessorize and personalize. Embellish your present with

personal touches and accessories to make it stand out. Theres no
need to go out and buy fancy bows and ribbons when you can
turn everyday items into personalized decorations directly related
to the gift itself like decorating with crayons if youre giving a
coloring book. For quick, DIY monogramming you can do at
home, simply use stencils to cut out the letters of your recipients
name and tape them directly onto the box. Find more resourceful
gift wrapping tips at ScotchBrand.com.

s the classic song goes,
the holidays really are
the most wonderful time of
the year. Between the cozy
scent and warmth of the fireplace, festive holiday parties
and catching up with loved
ones the merriment of the
season is endless.
Preparing for the holidays, however, can be a different story. From crowded
malls to impressing house
guests, this holiday survival
guide can help you get more
out of the season while maneuvering the process with
impressive ease.
Master the Mall. Dont
let the fear of large crowds,
retail prices and packed stores
stop you from completing
your holiday shopping list. If
you want to avoid long lines,
try visiting the mall when it
first opens in the morning and
plan which stores to visit first.
However, if you are only
available during prime shopping hours, the holiday lights
and decorations can make the
trek to the mall worth your
time.

knows to expect the unexpected. Plan a few activities
for out-of-town guests so
your house never feels too
cramped. Create a master
schedule of everyones travel
plans so you always know
who will be home at any
given time. Make a list of
what you want your main
holiday meal to look like, and
give yourself extra time to
prep and adjust ahead of time
if anyone requires special ac-

commodations. By making
sure all of your ducks are in a
row before the festivities
begin, you will be able to get
the most out of the holidays
with minimal stress.
Dont Stress the Mess.
Holiday parties are a great occasion to break out a vibrant
red lipstick or festive cocktail, but can also lead to
smudges and spills on your
clothes. Holiday stains know
no bounds, but with Clorox 2

The beginners guide to natural hair

n order to have a successful natural hair

journey, you must first understand exactly
what the term natural hair really means.
There are several different definitions of
the term, but below Ive provided the most
common definition for natural hair, and the
one that we will talk about most often on Curl
Centric.
The term natural hair is defined as relaxer-free hair, which is different from chemical-free hair. Chemicals, on the surface, are
often considered dangerous, but this is often
times not the case at all. Most chemicals that
you encounter on a daily basis are perfectly
safe and harmless. For example, water or
H2O is a safe chemical.
Getting Started on Your Natural Hair Journey
Black natural hair (i.e., african american
natural hair) is sometimes labeled as nappy
hair that needs to be corrected by a relaxer.
Weve heard of situations where women
have been discriminated against in the workplace due to having natural hairstyles, which
are deemed unprofessional by some employers.
Others have been denied jobs or promotions because of their natural hair. Natural
hair has also caused relationship issues for
many couples.

proof that your journey can be just as successful if youre willing to invest the time and energy into learning to care for your natural hair
properly.

Curl Centric is about helping you understand your natural hair and providing you
with information and resources to achieve
healthy natural hair. We often interview other
naturals on the blog because we want to give
everyone the opportunity to share their experiences with natural hair. We often learn the
most by reading and analyzing other peoples
experiences.
Its also encouraging when you see pictures of other women with natural hair and
hear them speak positively about their natural

HAIR PROS

Going Natural
There are problems with some of the advice thats typically given out online. Some
natural hair advisors or product manufacturers will tell you that you need to find the perfect products (sometimes called holy grail
products) or simply master a specific technique, like protective styling or the baggy
method, to have a successful natural hair journey.
If youve tried some of these techniques
and havent found the success that youre
aiming for, you probably know by now that
you need more than generic recycled advice.
Thats one of the main reasons that we built
Curl Centric.
Our hair care method is based on a comprehensive blueprint for building a successful
natural hair journey. Its not designed to only
provide short-term results for you, but to also
build a robust foundation that will lead to a
lifetime of success on your natural hair journey.

Rodriguez steps down as Paterson's deputy mayor

PATERSON:
ormer school board member Pedro Rodriguez resigned from the unpaid ceremonial position of deputy mayor this week, a
move that drew speculation that he was setting himself up to seek the city's top job.
Rodriguez said he stepped down because
he no longer agreed with Mayor Jose Joey
Torres on some issues and was not comfortable representing him at public events.
I had high expectations, Rodriguez
said of Torres administration. Maybe I was
a dreamer.
Torres dismissed Rodriguezs explanation for his departure. Thats not it, Torres
asserted. Tell him to tell you the real reason.
He wants to take my job. Torres said
Rodriguez had realized he could no longer go
around the city as the mayors surrogate and

his decision to leave the deputy mayor's post.

When asked what issues prompted him to distance himself from the Torres administration,
Rodriguez did not cite any specific actions or
policies. Instead, he said that Torres had a tendency to see Patersons various Hispanic cul-

tures as separate groups. I look at it all as one

community, Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez remains on the city payroll in
the $70,000 position of telecommunications
systems analyst for the Police Department.

Pedro Rodriguez

himself.
Rodriguez acknowledged that he has
been weighing a possible mayoral run in

Police Say Man Arrested

After Stealing Second Car

PATERSON, N.J
carjacking in New Jersey set off a frantic
search on Friday, after the suspect took off
with three kids in the backseat.
Surveillance video from inside an auto
body shop off Goffle Road in Hawthorne
shows a little girl walk in holding a womans
hand asking to use the bathroom. The mystery
woman is being hailed a hero after she followed
a stolen car containing the young one and her
two siblings.
We are very grateful a concerned citizen
did follow the vehicle and tell us where the vehicle and children ended up, Captain Richard
Reyes, Paterson Police said.
Police said the childrens mother stopped
and got out of her car to use an outdoor ATM
on Broadway in Paterson around 8 a.m. when
43-year-old Frank Saggese of East Hanover car
jacked her. He ended up driving off, dragging
her, Reyes said.
Witnesses say the thief dumped the 3
young children out of the car in a small parking
lot off North 6th Street and Goffle Road near
an auto body shop. I saw family came by after,
kids by themselves, dont know whats going
on, young, scared, nervous, Anand Shah said.

From there the suspect drove down the

street to a 7-Eleven, the scene of the next crime
where he switched cars. I grab my coffee, pay,
go outside, and my car wasnt there no more,

The Classic Warning Signs of an Abuser!

18 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER DEC 1-18, 2016

Dear Readers:
ecently I printed the feedback I received
regarding a letter from Robin whose feeling Smothered in the Bronx," a recently divorced mother of two. Her ex-husband had
been emotionally unavailable. She's now dating
his "exact opposite" who "treats her like a
queen" and is "loving, affectionate, generous
and' caring." She went on to say he stops by her
job "only a few" times a day, and the minute
she's home he shows up at her door.
All her dinners are with him -- he pays for
everything -- and he doesn't leave until her kids
go to bed. He spends every waking hour with
her and accompanies her wherever she goes.
She said she knows she should feel grateful, but
instead feels "indebted, stalked, controlled and
burdened." Her question: "Am I just being selfish, and can I train myself to like being
spoiled?"
I told her she and the man were overdue
for a candid talk about personal space that shes
still healing from her divorce and he seems so
smitten or insecure that he's preventing her
from figuring out where she ends and he begins. Today I'll share the classic warning signs
of an abuser. Read on:
1. PUSHES FOR QUICK INVOLVEMENT:
Comes on strong, claiming, "I've never felt
loved like this by anyone." An abuser presses
for an exclusive commitment almost immediately.
2. JEALOUS: excessively possessive; calls
constantly or visits unexpectedly; prevents you
from going to work because "you might meet
someone"; checks the mileage on your car.

3. CONTROLLING: Interrogates you intensely

(especially if you're late) about whom you
talked to and where you were; keeps all the
money; insists you ask permission to go anywhere or do anything.

4. UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS: Expects

you to be the perfect mate and meet his or her
every need.
5. ISOLATION: Tries to cut you off from family and friends; accuses people who are your
supporters of "causing trouble." The abuser
may deprive you of a phone or car, or try to prevent you from holding a job.
6. BLAMES.OTHERS FOR PROBLEMS OR
MISTAKES: It's always someone else's fault if
something goes wrong.

7. MAKES OTHERS RESPONSIBLE FOR

HIS OR HER FEELINGS: The abuser says,
"You make me angry," or "You're hurting me
by not doing what I tell you."

8. HYPERSENSITIVITY: Is easily insulted,

claiming hurt feelings when he or she is really
mad. Rants about the injustice of things that are
just a part of life.

9. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS OR CHILDREN: Kills or punishes animals brutally. Also

may expect children to do things that are far beyond their ability (whips a 3-year-old for wetting a diaper) or may tease them until they cry.
Sixty-five percent of abusers who beat their
partner will also abuse children.
10."PLAYFUL" USE OF FORCE DURING
SEX: Enjoys throwing you down or holding
you against your will during sex; finds the idea
of rape exciting.
11. VERBAL ABUSE: Constantly criticizes or
says blatantly cruel things; degrades curses,
calls you ugly names. This may also involve
sleep deprivation, waking you with relentless
verbal abuse.
12. RIGID GENDER ROLES: Expects you to
serve, obey and remain at home.
13. SUDDEN MOOD SWINGS: Switches
from sweet to violent in minutes.

14. PAST BATTERING: Admits to hitting a

mate in the past, but says the person "made"
him (or her) do it.

15. THREATS OF VIOLENCE: Says things

like, "I'll break your neck," or "I'll kill you,"
then dismisses them with "Everybody talks that
way," or "I didn't really mean it. If you are experiencing any of these signs you need to seek

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

Those hot flashes
NUTRICARE

20 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER DEC 1-18, 2016

reetings everyone! Happy holidays As We close out November.

Approximately 85% of women will experience hot flashes related to
menopause, when a woman's reproductive cycle ends naturally, or by surgery
or by cancer related therapy.

Declining estrogen (hormone) levels

affect concentration and at times may make
you feel as if you are in a fog. Doctors look
at yoga to get the estrogen level up in addition to two foods, ie; yams and pistachio.
Remember getting sufficient sleep aids
concentration, recharge brain cells and the
immune system. Not getting enough sleep
reflects a 13% higher risk of early death.
Yams are a fantastic food source for
energy while providing minerals, copper,
iron, potassium, and phosphorous. It is rich
in Vitamin C to boost immune system, antiaging and bone growth.
We need copper in the production of
our red blood cell formation. Pistachio also
provides energy and as mentioned in September health tip it is a monounsaturated
healthy fat.
It will assist in lowering our bad LDL
cholesterol and increase good HDL cholesterol. This nut is jam packed with the BComplex vitamins...niacin, thiamin, B-6,
folate, panthothenic acid, etc.
Eating a handful daily of pistachio will
supply the recommended levels of anti-oxidants, protein and minerals as mentioned.
I guess we better get our yoga mat,
yoga video or join a class real soon and set
a goal for 2017 God's willing!
The Bold program at Einstein offers a
variety of activity classes, crochet, yoga,
exercise and support programs for survivors.

Easy Steps for Cutting Sodium

Start the Shake-Down:

earning about the sodium in foods and

new ways to prepare foods will help you
to achieve your sodium goal. And, if you
follow these tips for reducing the amount of
sodium you are consuming, your taste for
salt will gradually decrease over time so
eventually, you may not even miss it!

Nutrition Facts Label with sodium circled

-- Read the Nutrition Facts Label to see how
much sodium is in the foods you are considering.
All Americans should consume less
than 100% of the Daily Value or less than
2400 mg of sodium each day. Check the
label for lower sodium choices and compare
sodium in different brands of foods like
frozen meals, packaged soups, breads, dressings/sauces, and snack foods and choose
those with lower sodium.
Prepare your own food when you can.
Dont salt foods before or during cooking,
and limit salt shaker use at the table.
Add Flavor Without Adding Sodium.
Use herbs and spices instead of salt to add
flavor to your foods. Try rosemary, oregano,
basil, curry powder, cayenne pepper, ginger,
fresh garlic or garlic powder (not garlic salt),
black or red pepper, vinegar or lemon juice,
and no-salt seasoning blends.
Get fresh when you can. Buy fresh or
frozen (not processed) poultry, pork and lean
meat rather than canned, smoked or
processed meats like luncheon meats,
sausages and corned beef. Fresh foods are

generally lower in sodium. Also, check the

package on fresh meat and poultry to see if
salt water or saline has been added.
Watch your veggies. Buy fresh, frozen
(without sauce), or low sodium or no-saltadded canned vegetables.
Give sodium the rinse. Rinse
sodium-containing canned foods, such as
tuna, vegetables, and beans before using.
This removes some of the sodium.
Examine your dairy products. Choose
fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products,
such as milk, yogurt, cheese and fortified soy
beverages (often called soymilk) in place of
processed cheese products and spreads,
which are higher in sodium.
Unsalt your snacks. Choose unsalted nuts and seeds, and snack products
such as chips and pretzels, that are marked
low sodium or no-salt-added or have
a carrot or celery stick instead.
Consider your condiments. Sodium in
soy sauce, ketchup, salad dressings, and seasoning packets can add up. Choose lite or reduced sodium soy sauce and no-salt-added
ketchup, add oil and vinegar to a salad rather
than bottled salad dressings, and use only a
small amount of seasoning from flavoring
packets instead of the entire packet.
Speak up at restaurants. Ask to see
the nutrition information in restaurants and
choose a lower-sodium option. Ask for your
meal to be prepared without salt and request
that sauces and salad dressings be served on
the side, then use less of them. You can also
reduce your portion size less food means
less sodium! For example, ask the server to
put half of your meal in a take out container
before it comes to your table or split an entre with a dinner companion.

Impact of a Trump Presidency on the Real Estate

Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business

hat can we expect when a property

industry tycoon becomes the leader
of the free world for the first time in history? There was volatility in financial markets in the immediate aftermath of Trumps
victory, which is being chalked up to
Brexit-like jitters, yet there is much room
for speculation because of the PresidentElects lack of political history and policy
plans.
The U.S. housing market is made up of
many moving parts buyer and seller sentiment, mortgage rates, home building and
more all of which influence the strategies that will be delivered to clients on a
grassroots level by agents and brokers.
What follows is a collection of the opinions
of industry experts regarding the future of
real estate, now that the election is officially
decided.
With a seasoned real estate tycoon taking up residence in the luxury property at
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, one would expect that the atmosphere would be ripe for
profitability to skyrocket, but a realistic
analysis leaves things looking less clear.
A key point of Donald Trumps campaign has been his anti-immigration stance.
Not only did he campaign on promises to
deport vast numbers of undocumented immigrants, but he has also promised to make
work visas much more difficult to obtain.
What that means for real estate is two-fold.

By SHARON R. FRANK
Realtor/Developer/Columnist/Coach

If he does follow through and make

long term visas much more difficult to obtain, it may negatively impact the luxury
market, as international buyers tend to both
purchase and invest in higher-end properties, as well as new construction projects.
The reduced infusion of cash may restrict
growth in this sector. If that is how things
unfold, it would be quite ironic, as Trump
himself is heavily invested in that very sector.
The other side of immigration reform,
which involves the deportation of millions
of undocumented immigrants may gut the

construction workforce, causing work

slowdowns on new development due to
labor shortages, and may also result in increasing construction costs. Paired with the
reduced demand for housing, new construction may slow dramatically.
The promise of tax cuts and increased
government spending on infrastructure will
likely boost the economy in the first half of
2017, which will in turn, drive both interest
rates and inflation higher.
However, if Trump continues to be unpredictable, it is likely that the financial
markets will continue to be volatile, which
would generally cause the Federal Reserve
to hesitate to increase prime interest rates.
Whether the initial economic boom will
continue long term will determine whether
there is actually an improvement in the
economy or if interest rates will remain disproportionately high, saddling the next generation with increasing housing debt.
Another factor that may play into the
long term outcome is restrictions on international trade, which could set off another
recession.
There is likely to be change in the
Dodd-Frank Regulations imposed on small
banks. Typically, the smaller banks lend to
real estate developers, so if these banks are
less regulated, they will have more leeway
to lend, thus driving the real estate development market. This may also lead to less
strict underwriting on personal mortgages

as well, which would allow people with

lower credit scores to obtain financing for
their real estate purchases.
Finally, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
programs might be eliminated, which
would be very unfortunate for the average
homebuyer. Without the guarantees that
these programs offer, first time homebuyers
may have much more difficulty securing a
loan, and affordable 30 year fixed rate
mortgages may become a thing of the past.
If youve followed me this far, you
probably see that there are so many factors
in play that projections are varied and often
conflicting. Just about the only thing that
seems sure in terms of the impact of the
presidential election on real estate is that
mortgage rates will go up somewhat in the
short term.
What follows will be determined by
which of his campaign promises PresidentElect Trump will actually keep.
