other pieces of information that relate to a given topic.

II. Objectives/Targets and I can statements

What am I going to teach?
What will the students be able to do at the end
of the lesson?
What formative assessments are used to
inform instruction?
What challenges might students encounter?

III. Lesson Management: Focus and

Organization
What positive strategies, techniques and tools
will you see?
What ideas for on task, active and focused
student behavior?

IV. Introduction: Creating Excitement and

Focus for the Lesson Target
What will you do to generate interest?
How will you access prior knowledge?
What will you practice/review?

I can list at least 2 facts or details about space.

So we have been doing a lot of learning and reading about

what topic? (Students answer space!) I have a cool little
song for you to watch to get your brains remembering about
space.

What information does the learner need?
If needed, how will it be provided?

Lets begin reading Exploring Space. Call on a student to

begin reading. Ok, thank you (students name). Now
remember how this month you are doing a research project
about space? Maybe I want to research astronauts. We just
read some important details about astronauts that I would
need for my report. On a large chart paper/ white board
write: Astronauts have landed and walked on the moon.
Read it to the group. That is interesting to know about

VII. Checking for Understanding

Samples of questions to be asked
Ways in which students will respond and be
engaged
Formative assessment strategies to be
implemented

VII. Guided Practice: We Do

What do the teacher and student do together?
How will a gradual release of responsibility be
accomplished?

Independent Practice (You Do)
What practices will be demonstrated/modeled?

astronauts! How awesome must it be for them to walk on

the moon! I wonder if there are other planets or moons that
astronauts have walked on. What great ideas I am getting
for my project! There were other great details we read
about astronauts. We read they wear space suits and carry
their own air (write that as you talk). I wonder why
astronauts have to carry their own airwhat do you think?
What is a fact or detail that you heard in the Story Bots
song?

So lets continue to read the next part of the text. [choose

student to read] Wow, weve heard a lot of details in that
passage. Lets break them down together on our graphic
organizer. See the very big box at the top? Thats where our
topic goes. Our topic is the same as the title of the story,
could someone tell me our topic? Great. So we just read
about two things. 1 thing we learned about was spacecraft
[write this in the organizer]. Who can tell me what the
spacecraft did? [answers: took photographs/pictures or
landed on Mars] We also read about a planet, which planet
was it? [Mars] The book told us lots of facts or details about
Mars. One fact I remember is that Mars is cold [write on the
organizer]. What other details were there about Mars? [write
info in the organizer as students answer.]
Great! Now lets go on to read the next part. [select
another student to read] Ok, now Id like you to fill out the
next bubble of your organizer on your own about the facts
you just learned about Venus.
Today we learned how to discover facts. I have a quick

How will the I can statement(s) be reviewed?

How will students be involved?
What connections to future learning will occur?
XI. Assessment
What evidence supports that the objective(s)
were met?
What do my students know, understand and
are able to do?
What formative assessments will be used to
inform instruction?

Reflection
How do you know that the objective(s)/target(s)
was met? What is your
evidence?
Based on the data gathered, what will you do
next?
How well did the students perform/respond?
How did students show they
were engaged?
What evidence do you have?
What aspect of the lesson was particularly
challenging for students? What
will you do to help the student(s) who
struggled?
What will you do to extend the learning for
those students who met
target?
Were there any surprises? What would you do
if you taught this lesson
again?

review activity for you about space. You have to match the
keyword to the fact. Some of these will be from the book we
just read, and some facts will be from our ULS lessons.
Everyone did a great job today. Before we go to movement
break, Id like you each to write 2 facts you learned today on
these sticky notes. You have to turn them in to me to be
able to go to break. Thank you for your hard work! [exit
tickets will serve as assessment as well as the review
activity]
